Language Arts Course Description Grade 8
This course is designed to provide instruction in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Grammar, vocabulary, and spelling are taught as viable components of the writing process.
Students write informational, descriptive, and persuasive essays. The students read long and short literary and non-fiction text including but not limited to the following works:
Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi A Separate Peace by John Knowles
The Red Pony by John Steinbeck
“On the Pulse of Morning” by Maya Angelou
“The Road not Taken” by Robert Frost
“Lift Every Voice and Sing” by James Weldon Johnson “Portrait of my Mother” by Vladimir Nabokov
Grading Policy Language for Language Art During Distance Learning Grade 8
–Students are expected to submit assignments on the day they are due. Late work will receive reduced credit or no credit depending upon the degree of lateness. Assignments are posted on the teacher’s Power School Learning (PSL) page.
–Specific criteria for each assignment is presented either verbally or in the form of written instructions depending upon the nature of the assignment.
–Grade scales are provided for major assignments.
