From the desk of Sister Stella

" We have committed the Golden Rule to memory. Now let us commit it to life."

From the Desk of Sister Stella Maria, Principal

WITH GREAT JOY AND EXCITEMENT, WE WELCOME ALL GRADPARENTS AND SPECIAL FRIENDS ON JUNE 3RD.

Parents I hope you enjoy reading the following message delivered by Bill Gates to a senior class.

Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.

RULE 1: Life is not fair – get used to it!

RULE 2: The world won’t care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

RULE 3: You will NOT make $60,000.00 a year right out of high school. You wont be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

RULE 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

RULE 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

RULE 6: If you mess up, it’s not your parent’s fault, so don’t whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

RULE 7: Before your were born, your parents weren’t as boring as they are now They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent’s generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

RULE 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they’ll give you as MANY TIMES, as you want to get the right answer. This doesn’t bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

RULE 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don’t get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

RULE 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

RULE 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you’ll end up working for one

Congratulations to the two fourth grade students who took the prize for the WILLIAM HANNON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. LILY R.3rd grade and MICHAEL O'C. 3rd grade each received a $1000.00 scholarship towards their tuition. We wish to express appreciation to all of our fourth graders who participated in the contest. A million thanks to Miss McDermott who patiently guided the students in each segment of the project.

Lauren N. and Dylan M. have the great honor of been selected by the fourth grade in a private ballot as the most Christian students in the entire fourth grade. Congratulations Lauren and Dylan. You will each receive $250 towards your tuition from the Han Ren Memorial Foundation.

STATE SCIENCE FAIR ANNOUNCEMENT

Congratulations to the 4 students who participated in the California State Science Fair - Adam W., Dani S., Brynn C., and Robert McR. They did a great job presenting their projects.

Brynn C. took 3rd place in the social sciences category!!!

Our most sincere thanks to Dr. Jeff Wang and his team form UCLA for checking all students from grades five through eight for scoliosis. State law for each school requires this examination. Miss Andersen has been in touch with parents if there was a concern with any student.

Dear SPA Families:

I hope everyone had a restful Memorial Day weekend and that everyone is returning refreshed for these last few weeks of the school year!

The PWC hopes that each child enjoyed the school pizza lunch from our new hot lunch caterer, Beth's Kitchen! It was a fun afternoon of pizza, salad, fruit, and fun for both students and faculty! Many thanks to Kelley Workman and Mayora Hiney for all their hard work that day!

Grandparent's Day will be held this Friday, June 3rd. We hope that each child will enjoy having their grandparent and/or special friend in the classroom for the morning! Valet parking will be available. Due to the large number of grandparents attending, we regret that we cannot invite parents to attend. Thank you for your understanding!

Have a great short week!

A huge thank you to the kindergarten parents for the great job done with traffic for the month of May. Thank you room parents ! Kelly Abe, Kimberly Harold, Jewel Kracoff and Jackie Mason, you did a fantastic job of helping, jumping in when needed and keeping the kindergarten parents informed.

June traffic assignments are full. Sorry to those who wanted to help out but couldn’t reserve a slot in time. They went fast, I must say!!! A big thank you to our bold volunteers for June.

Reminders: 1) If you are directed up the driveway or to the curb on Selby you must do just that. If you are concerned about traffic on Ohio then you might consider accessing Ohio north of the church, taking a left from Selby onto Ohio and dropping off in the Ohio handicap spot. Please do what the traffic directors on Ohio and Selby direct you to do as this makes for the clearest and safest situation!

Weekly Readings/Reflections

June 5, 2005
Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Psalm: Sunday 26

Reading I
Hos 6:3-6

In their affliction, people will say:
"Let us know, let us strive to know the LORD;
as certain as the dawn is his coming,
and his judgment shines forth like the light of day!
He will come to us like the rain,
like spring rain that waters the earth."
What can I do with you, Ephraim?
What can I do with you, Judah?
Your piety is like a morning cloud,
like the dew that early passes away.
For this reason I smote them through the prophets,
I slew them by the words of my mouth;
for it is love that I desire, not sacrifice,
and knowledge of God rather than holocausts.

Reading II
Rom 4:18-25

Brothers and sisters:
Abraham believed, hoping against hope,
that he would become "the father of many nations,"
according to what was said, "Thus shall your descendants be."
He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body
as already dead--for he was almost a hundred years old--
and the dead womb of Sarah.
He did not doubt God's promise in unbelief;
rather, he was strengthened by faith and gave glory to God
and was fully convinced that what he had promised
he was also able to do.
That is why it was credited to him as righteousness.
But it was not for him alone that it was written
that it was credited to him;
it was also for us, to whom it will be credited,
who believe in the one who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead,
who was handed over for our transgressions
and was raised for our justification

.Gospel
Mt 9:9-13

As Jesus passed on from there,
he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post.
He said to him, "Follow me."
And he got up and followed him.
While he was at table in his house,
many tax collectors and sinners came
and sat with Jesus and his disciples.
The Pharisees saw this and said to his disciples,
"Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"
He heard this and said,
"Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do.
Go and learn the meaning of the words,
'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.'
I did not come to call the righteous but sinners."
