From the desk of Sister Stella

“There is a gentle breeze if we can but catch it, which blows all the time to help us on our journey through life to our final destination. That breeze is the Holy Spirit. But the wind cannot be caught or used unless the sail is hoisted, and the hoisting is our task. We must be on the watch, ready to recognize it and play our part. God does not hold us, and will lead us, if we want it; but we must want it.” –Cardinal Basil Hume

From the desk of Sister Stella Maria, Principal:

Congratulations and best wishes to our new elected officials!

From SPA School Board

All School parents are undoubtedly aware of the SPA Parish annual stewardship campaign -- the time to review your time, talent and treasure and pledge what you can to help SPA Parish (Church & School). In the “treasure” department, the vast majority of School families give at least enough money through the weekly offering envelopes to qualify for the lower, in-parish tuition rate; many give even more. It appears, however, that most School parents are not aware that they need to fill out the annual stewardship commitment card and return it to the Parish office by the end of May (which is rapidly approaching). Even though you may give money in the weekly offering envelopes at Mass, you still need to fill out the commitment card. Those cards are the only good way our Parish office has to construct the annual Parish budget with a reasonable degree of confidence and accuracy. You may be committed to giving -- but no one will know for sure unless you complete the card and return it to the Parish office. For such a giving group, our School families have an extremely low return rate for the commitment cards. Please get your card in right away! The cards are available in the Church and in the Parish office. Take a minute this week to fill one out and, if you can, please also consider increasing your time and talent commitment to the Parish in the process of completing this administrative requirement before the end of May. Thanks in advance!

Weekly Readings/Reflections

Readings for Ascension Sunday May 28th

Reading I
Acts 1:1-11

In the first book, Theophilus,
I dealt with all that Jesus did and taught
until the day he was taken up,
after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit
to the apostles whom he had chosen.
He presented himself alive to them
by many proofs after he had suffered,
appearing to them during forty days
and speaking about the kingdom of God.
While meeting with them,
he enjoined them not to depart from Jerusalem,
but to wait for “the promise of the Father
about which you have heard me speak;
for John baptized with water,
but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

When they had gathered together they asked him,
“Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”
He answered them, “It is not for you to know the times or seasons
that the Father has established by his own authority.
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you,
and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem,
throughout Judea and Samaria,
and to the ends of the earth.”
When he had said this, as they were looking on,
he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight.
While they were looking intently at the sky as he was going,
suddenly two men dressed in white garments stood beside them.
They said, “Men of Galilee,
why are you standing there looking at the sky?
This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven
will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven.”

Gospel
Mark 16:15-20

Jesus said to his disciples:
“Go into the whole world
and proclaim the gospel to every creature.
Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved;
whoever does not believe will be condemned.
These signs will accompany those who believe:
in my name they will drive out demons,
they will speak new languages.
They will pick up serpents with their hands,
and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them.
They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

So then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them,
was taken up into heaven
and took his seat at the right hand of God.
But they went forth and preached everywhere,
while the Lord worked with them
and confirmed the word through accompanying signs.

Fall Festival

Surf’s Up, St. Paul’s!  Thank you to all who have so generously supported Festival Patronage to date as well as spring festival wear sales.  The raffle “board of fame” has several names on it – students who have sold ten books of tickets so far and more are meeting that challenge each day!  We are grateful and excited about all of the enthusiasm!  Speaking of a “wave” of enthusiasm – there were many families who paddled hard to complete their festival family signs and to showcase the festival theme.   Choosing the “best” ones was impossible but we did what we could to select several winners from around the campgrounds.  They are listed below.  A special congratulations to Jared Kracoff and the Kracoff family – Rick, Jewel, Joshua and Alexandra – as their family sign received recognition for best artistic interpretation and execution of the festival theme!

Outstanding overall family sign incorporating all of the elements – thematic application, use of multiple mediums including a surf board goes to the
Moulton Family

Best use of multimedia resources including film goes to the
Anderson Family

Best cross application of theme – Irish and surf theme goes to the
Mackey Family

Best and most creative use of material to execute the sign goes to the
Hassenfratz Family

Best protection against the elements and creative use of materials to execute their sign goes to the
Richard and Nancy Lewis Family

Best “surf” board as their family sign goes to the
Plumb Family

The runners-up in this category were the Hart and Hardy families.

Best use of supplies and the sign that won the “welcome to our campsite award” goes to the DiMeglio and McLoon families

Thanks to all who got into the spirit of the project and shared that with others.  We would like to ask all of the surfboard sign families to please contact us if you would like to donate your sign for festival decorations.  We would like to have our own “board of fame” at the actual festival in October!

Please see our attachments as auction and patronage have news for you!

St. James Inn News

ST. JAMES INN - SUMMER FIESTA 2006

The St. James Inn invites you to an outdoor “Summer Fiesta” on Saturday, July 22nd at one of L.A.’s best-kept secrets, the historic Gilmore Adobe. Come for margaritas, tasty Mexican cuisine, dancing under the stars, incredible auctions, and catching up with friends.

Founded almost 20 years ago by Fr. Pat Traynor (with the help of St. Paul the Apostle families), the Inn provides a home away from home for out-of-town patients and families undergoing treatment at UCLA Medical Center and other nearby hospitals.

This year’s fundraiser is dedicated to the memory of our beloved director, Fr. Harold "Bud" Powers, CSP.

For more details, please contact Judy Ness.

See you on July 22nd!
