“Feedback is not something to be endured. It is something to be sought after, because that’s the way we get better.” (Frank Lafasto)
From the Desk of Sister Stella Maria, Principal:
Parents, several weeks ago we asked you to respond to a “wish list” regarding priorities for using this coming festival’s funds. Approximately fifteen families have taken the time to relay their feedback. If you have forgotten about this opportunity, it is not too late to send your top three ideas to me. Your ideas are all very helpful.
Please look for the following important information in this Thursday’s Brown Envelop.
- A sample form that is used by employees of the Archdiocese when reporting suspected child abuse.
- A statement from Cardinal Mahony, titled ARCHDIOCESE BEGINS PROCESS TO FUND FUTURE SETTLEMENTS IN CIVIL CASES.
- Instructional schedule for Protecting God’s Children.
Parents, I can’t begin to thank you enough for the support and cooperation for attending our morning sessions on Protecting God’s Children.

Readings/Reflections
READINGS FOR ASCENSION SUNDAY MAY 20
Reading 1
Acts 1:1-11
In the first book, Theophilus,
I dealt with all that Jesus did and taught
until the day he was taken up,
after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit
to the apostles whom he had chosen.
He presented himself alive to them
by many proofs after he had suffered,
appearing to them during forty days
and speaking about the kingdom of God.
While meeting with them,
he enjoined them not to depart from Jerusalem,
but to wait for “the promise of the Father
about which you have heard me speak;
for John baptized with water,
but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
When they had gathered together they asked him,
“Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”
He answered them, “It is not for you to know the times or seasons
that the Father has established by his own authority.
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you,
and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem,
throughout Judea and Samaria,
and to the ends of the earth.”
When he had said this, as they were looking on,
he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight.
While they were looking intently at the sky as he was going,
suddenly two men dressed in white garments stood beside them.
They said, “Men of Galilee,
why are you standing there looking at the sky?
This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven
will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven.”
Gospel
Luke 24:45-53
Jesus said to his disciples:
“Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer
and rise from the dead on the third day
and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins,
would be preached in his name
to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
You are witnesses of these things.
And behold I am sending the promise of my Father upon you;
but stay in the city
until you are clothed with power from on high.”
Then he led them out as far as Bethany,
raised his hands, and blessed them.
As he blessed them he parted from them
and was taken up to heaven.
They did him homage
and then returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
and they were continually in the temple praising God.

St. Paul the Apostle Chess Club: 20 Years of Thinking Ahead, 1987-2007
St. Paul’s Chess Team Overpowers Westwood Charter 19-9

When St. Paul’s Chess Team hosted Westwood Charter in March, WC won in a squeaker, 7.5 to 6.5, and our students knew there would soon be a rematch. And was there ever! Westwood Charter hosted teachers Jack Peters, Ivona Jezierska and 28 SPA students this past Friday afternoon and the result proved that St. Paul’s is fast becoming a chess powerhouse. St. Paul’s notched 16 wins and four draws, resulting in a final score of 19-9. The majority of wins came from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Grades, with four wins each. Congratulations to the winners: Kindergarten’s Stuart D., Grace M., First Graders Reid W., Connor B., Jordan M. and Sophie W., second graders Stephen B., Patrick M. and Matthew W., Ava H., third graders Stefano W., Graham M., Nicholas R. and Hale T., fifth graders Charlie C. and Anastasia P., and eight grader Sean B. Thank you to all the students who represented our school with kindness, fair play and an overall sense of good sportsmanship.
Jack Peters was pleased with the performance of all the players and looks at these recent team matches as “the first of the millennium” for St. Paul’s. John Thomas Dye and Westwood Charter were our first 2007 opponents and more schools will follow in the months ahead. Happy 20th Anniversary.
Mark your calendarsfor theYear-end Chess Club Awards Ceremony on Monday, June 4th, in the Parish Center, 3:00–4:30 pm. All are welcome. And meet our new Chess Club Treasurer, SPA alum Brian Whitney.
It’s your move!
