"The first rule for success? Show up." Jeanne Robertson

From the Desk of SSM

Today we salute and thank the 2002-2003 Paulist Women's Club Board. You have given 100% of yourselves throughout this year. Each one of you has carried out your tasks with great care and dedication. You have shown up to Board meetings early on Monday mornings and you have shown up to perform your various duties and responsibilities with great pride and diligence. Our school community owes you a dept of gratitude for your most generous and consistent service throughout the year. Carolyn, you have been a most successful leader and you brought the best out of each member of your board and from each committee.

Thank You to all of you and to all members of your families who shared you with us.

Miss Hall and Miss Craveiro, Once again, by your lovely selections of music and songs, you brought delight to the hearts of our parents. Thank you for enriching our lives and instilling a love of music in the heart of our children

.St. Joseph's Center celebration of our school community was a spectacular success. What a party! It was delightful to see the participation of so many from St. Paul’s:

Fr. Tom and the Parish Core Staff
Sr. Linda Webb, DMJ Provincial of the DMJ'S and many community members.
Mrs. Kathleen Damish, our school supervisor
      Several SPA teachers

Carolyn Moynagh, PWC President and members of her Board.
Many, many parents and friends from St. Paul’s.
Next week you may view our rewards in the school library.

I pray that each Mother had a blessed Mother's Day and that each day of this year will be filled with continued blessings.

"A mother is not to be compared with another person. She is incomparable".
(African Proverb.)

Mother’s Day Musings

This past April, I visited the Bill Viola exhibit at the Getty Museum. Viola uses the medium of video for his artwork. For this series, entitled The Passions, he immersed himself in studying many of the old masters’ paintings. One painting, The Annunciation, painted by a lesser known
Flemish artist, particularly struck Viola. In it Mary is kneeling in prayer and the angel Gabriel is standing behind Mary, announcing to her that she is to be the mother of the Christ.

On the audio tape that accompanied the exhibition, Viola suggested that the Annunciation is perhaps the most significant moment that has ever been represented in art. He was struck by the restrained emotion in the artwork and suggested that what the painting, and perhaps the actual event really was about. Knowing something before words and before language… the way a woman knows inside that she is pregnant. It kind of knows it on the inside it’s not head knowledge…it’s inner knowledge." Any woman who has had the opportunity to conceive
understands what Viola is trying to express. There is a mysterious, private feeling of stillness and clarity, an "inner knowing", that steals upon a woman when she first becomes aware that she is pregnant.

This profound knowing resembles moments in our lives when the clouds part, and a deep sense of faith is strong and immediate. At those times faith is also a mysterious, private feeling of stillness and clarity…an "inner knowing". It is as if one is pregnant with faith. Perhaps that is
one of the reasons why motherhood is held in such high esteem in our culture. There is something about it that interacts with the divine in a fleshy, concrete way that no other human experience can come close to

.Speaking for the staff and parishioners of St. Paul’s, I wish all the women of the parish who, in myriad ways, have nurtured and been life-givers to others, a very happy Mother’s Day.

Pastoral Coordinator

Weekly Readings/Reflections

Next Sunday, May 18, is the Fifth Sunday of Easter
Please read and reflect on these readings during the week (alone or with family and friends), and come to next Sunday’s liturgy prepared to listen attentively to the proclamation of the Word of God.

READING I Acts 9:26-31

When Saul arrived in Jerusalem he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he was a disciple. Then Barnabas took charge of him and brought him to the apostles,
and he reported to them how he had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had spoken out boldly in the name of Jesus.
He moved about freely with them in Jerusalem, and spoke out boldly in the name of the Lord.
He also spoke and debated with the Hellenists, but they tried to kill him.
And when the brothers learned of this, they took him down to Caesarea and sent him on his way to Tarsus.
The church throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria was at peace.
It was being built up and walked in the fear of the Lord, and with the consolation of the Holy Spirit it grew in numbers.

READING II 1 John 3:18-24

Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth.
Now this is how we shall know that we belong to the truth and reassure our hearts before him in whatever our hearts condemn, for God is greater than our hearts and knows everything.
Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence in God and receive from him whatever we ask, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him.
And his commandment is this:
we should believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another just as he commanded us.
Those who keep his commandments remain in him, and he in them,
and the way we know that he remains in us is from the Spirit he gave us.

GOSPEL John 15:1-8

Jesus said to his disciples:
"I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower.
He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and every one that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit.
You are already pruned because of the word that I spoke to you.
Remain in me, as I remain in you.
Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me.
I am the vine, you are the branches.
Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing.
Anyone who does not remain in me will be thrown out like a branch and wither; people will gather them and throw them into a fire and they will be burned.
If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want and it will be done for you.
By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples."

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER (May 18)

READINGS The disciples fear, then trust Saul (Paul) who is preaching with power; We show love best in deeds, not words;
We need to stay connected to the Lord to be fruitful disciples.

WHAT I HEAR What does being connected to the ‘true vine’ mean for me?

MY FAITH JOURNEY Who is my spiritual mentor? Have we connected recently?

FOR CHILDREN Have you seen what happens to a branch when it is cut off from the tree? If it stays connected it is full of life and becomes more beautiful. Jesus wants us to stay close to him like that.
How can we stay close to Jesus this week?
