Reflection in preparation for Pentecost Sunday and Mother’s Day, May 11th:

“Listen”
Listen let your heart keep seeking.                                          Listen to her constant speaking.
Listen to the Spirit calling you.
                                               Listen to her invitation.
Listen to her inspiration.                                                                                                  Listen to the Spirit calling you.

From the Desk of Sister Stella Maria, Principal:

LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AT OUR TENTED EVENT.

Happy Mother’s Day to all of our Mothers! May you have a day filled with joy and gratitude for yourself as a Mother and for your own mothers.

As our Parents Working for Children Leaders officially pass on their responsibilities to our new board, we wish to express our congratulations and gratitude! This board of 2007-2008, under the leadership of Tina Cathcart, has been spectacular. Their enthusiasm, cooperation and optimistic outlook on all events and projects have been second to none. Tina, you are an outstanding leader and in your leadership you have brought nothing but joy, light, sunshine and humor. Your board worked hard for you and with you. You did not ask any of them to do what you yourself did not do. Thank you for a splendid year and for the many hearty laughs we enjoyed.

Ms. Hall, thank you and congratulations for one of the most entertaining concerts you have produced here at St. Paul’s. What an incredible introduction the first through fourth grades have had to the music of America. Children, we are very proud of your efforts and cooperation with Ms. Hall and your outstanding performance. Thank you.

Parents, Summer School notices were mailed to you the week of May 5th. Please read and understand the entire content of the form before making phone calls to your teachers.

We wish to offer our sincere thanks to each parent who has spent some time on yard supervision this school year. The children and coaches have appreciated the assistance of the parents who walked the yard and kept an eye on all students and not just their particular child. For the week of May 12th until June 18th, we would like to try an experiment. If it works, we will implement it next year:

-Parents arrive at their designated time.

-Get an entry badge and yard duty confirmation badge.

-Report to the coach on duty and be assigned to a particular area.

-Stay in that area for the entire recess – Be an active and positive presence.

-There will be one parent per area.

Sr. Stella Enright

Los Angeles, CA 90024

Dear Sr. Stella:

On behalf of the many children and their families whom we serve at St. Joseph Center, we express our appreciation for your donation totaling $16,057.19, this spring for the Read-a-Thon program at St. Paul the Apostle School. This year the students raised over $16,000, which is truly inspiring and is witness to the values that the faculty and their parents work to instill in them.

This program is a wonderful model of what students can do to enhance their own learning and, at the same time, assist the homeless and poor of our society. Every book and page read by the St. Paul’s children created a potential for the children of our low-income families to receive nutritious food or to participate in our after-school tutoring or mentoring programs.

As St. Joseph Center celebrates over 30 year of service, we reflect on our many blessings and supporters. St. Paul the Apostle School has been a wonderful partner to St. Joseph Center over the years. Your staff, students and parents demonstrate in a very tangible way the important lessons of compassion and service.

On behalf of St. Joseph Center’s clients and staff, I thank you for partnering with us and helping us with our work of Planting Hope, Growing Lives.

Sincerely,

Va Lecia Adams, Ph.D.

Executive Director

Cultural Program News

On Monday, May 19, your child/children will be seeing the last of the three cultural programs scheduled for this academic year.  The cultural program will be performed by the Alley Cats.  This dynamic a cappella group brings their own contemporary style to tunes from the 50s and 60s.  Our students will learn about the unique American musical form called doo-wop, hear four-part harmony and learn about pitch, tempo and rhythm.  The Alley Cats have performed at Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm and the White House.  Any questions or comments can be directed to Leslie McDowell in the school irectory.

Weekly Readings/Reflections

Pentecost Sunday

May 11, 2008

Reading 1 Acts 2:1-11When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled,
they were all in one place together.
And suddenly there came from the sky
a noise like a strong driving wind,
and it filled the entire house in which they were.
Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit
and began to speak in different tongues,
as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem. At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd,
but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language. They were astounded, and in amazement they asked,
“Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans?
Then how does each of us hear them in his native language?
We are Parthians,  Medes, and Elamites,
I habitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia,
Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome,
both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs,
yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues
of the mighty acts of God.”

Gospel
In 20:19-30On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews,
Jesus came and stood in their midst
and said to them, “Peace be with you.
” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side.
The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you.
As the Father has sent me, so I send you. ” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and aid to them,
“Receive the Holy Spirit.
Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them,
and whose sins you retain are retained.”
