Matthew 5: 1-12
From the Desk of Sr. Stella Maria, Principal:
Grandparents Day was a great success due to the detailed organization and superb effort of Anne Marie Scibelli and her most efficient workers. A million thanks to all of those who contributed their time and talent. The Children, Grandparents and Special Friends were all full of smiles. The children were very proud to show their Grandparents and Special Friends their classrooms, library, art studio and friends. We also wish to acknowledge our wonderful Mormon Friends for allowing valet parking and giving us the use of their field for grades three through eight.
We would be remiss if we did not mention the outstanding work of our first graders who, with their teachers, prepared a Liturgy that was inspirational. Presenting our gift of $15,000.000 to the St. Joseph Center in the presence of Grandparents and Special Friends was very moving, since many of those who contributed were with us to share in the experience.
We give our gratitude and congratulations to Miss Newton and her co-workers for an amazing production of The Lady Pirates of Captain Bree. What an ambitious undertaking! To organize a cast of forty-five students was no small task. We are already looking forward to next year’s creation.
Our next big event, the Spring Soiree, will be held right here on campus. An evening of fun for grown ups. Thank you to all who are working to make this event a success. Please also see the announcement in this edition of the epistle regarding the Paulist Choristers’ upcoming event.
As a reminder Parents, when you do not read the Epistle or remember what’s going on in school, all you have to do is dial the school hotline. The hotline number is on page 1 of the directory and the recorded message will fill you in on all of the events for that week. Remember, we have told you to check the Epistle for calendar updates.
Last January 17th, the Wall Street Journal published an article by Sue Shellenbarger entitled “What’s Gotten Into Kids These Days?” We will copy and send this article in our next Brown Envelope or you can e-mail Sue Shellenbarger at shellenbargere@wsj.com. This article is well worth reading as we are witnessing some of the behaviors under discussion in our Kindergarten and First Grade classrooms. By second grade, with your guidance, there is 90% increase in growth and change. It usually takes two years to affect significant change.
Our biggest challenge is that many parents do not acknowledge that their child would ever do anything that was inappropriate. Just remember Parents, research has shown that when the home and the school work together, the child grows three times faster.
News from the Debate Club:
Mrs. Alessi is proud to announce that the St. Paul team of Declan (7B), Alex (8A) and Matt (8A) have won first place in the Independent League Championship Tournament. They are sharing this first place honor with a team from Brentwood School. The Independent League consists of teams from Brentwood, Harvard Westlake, Windward, Marlborough, Oakwood, Curtis, Campbell Hall, Polytechnic, La Reina and St. Paul the Apostle. These schools brought in over 80 teams to the league championship. The team of Jed (8A), Jessica (8A) and Anthony (6A) also placed in the top 20 teams. Out of more than 250 individual participants, Declan (7B) placed 3rd, Jessica (8A) placed 8th and Matt (8A) placed 29th. Last weekend the National Middle School Debate Championship Tournament was held as the Claremont-McKenna Colleges. There were 76 teams participating from as far away as Washington D.C. St. Paul’s was permitted to take two teams. Both teams placed in the top 25.
22nd place: Jed (8A), Jessica (8A) and Anthony (6A)
19th place: Declan (7B), Alex (8A), and Matt (8A)
Individual trophies went to Jessica (8A) for 16th pace and Declan (7B) for 13th place. Anthony (6A) was one point away from receiving an individual trophy.
We give our best and sincere congratulations to our debate team and their coach, Mrs. Alessi!

Dear SPA Parents:
Anne Marie Scibelli and Committee…what an AMAZING Grandparents/Special Friends Day!!! The day could not have run more smoothly.. Anne Marie..loved wearing my headset. You really covered all bases. The compliments from Grandparents were enough to put a smile on anyone’s face. Our intent was to make it a special day for them WITH their grandchildren, and that definitely happened-thanks to worker-bees like Marietta Newbern, Carol and Mark Raineri, Darryl Crowley, Trish Dixon and many more… Room Parents and Volunteers… the day would not have been so successful if you were not there to make it happen. Your presence that day was indispensable!! When this community comes together… what amazing events come together!
The Installation/Spring Sing II will be on Wednesday, May 7th… Please remember to send in your reservations by the deadline, THIS Friday, May 2nd via the Black Bag –attn: Reservations-Spring Sing II. Our caterers need to plan accordingly for our “Italiano” menu. We will say farewell to the 2007-2008 Board (although they still hold their jobs until June 30th)… and say hello to the 2008-2009 Board… please join us for the Power Point Presentation on the PWC.. the day begins at 11:00.
The SPRING SOIREE is only 10 days away…. The committee has been planning for a lovely evening with fun times including dancing, car raffle, jewelry raffle (in time for Mother’s Day) GREAT food, petite auction, and good times with friends!!! What else could you ask for? Please send in the reservation cards ASAP… we need to plan accordingly. Do not miss this event… you will have missed out on all of the EXCITEMENT! Any questions-please contact myself or Jackie Brooks.
I hope that the first graders and parents had a wonderful Potluck evening! The Second Grade Potluck and Prayer Service is Thursday evening… hope this is special for our little ones who are going to receive The First Eucharist for the first time beginning this weekend at all of the Masses… blessings to all of them!

This year’s coin drive will benefit the Maryvale Orphanage in Rosemead, California. Maryvale is a wonderful, nurturing place where children in need can “achieve fulfillment, dignity and self-esteem in an environment of stability and love” (from Maryvale Mission Statement). The children will be receiving a pamphlet from Maryvale this week at chool. Your donations will be greatly appreciated so let’s rise to the challenge!
Let the games begin! The grade that collects the most money (not the most coins) will be chillin’ on a hot day with a cool PARTY of FROSTY TREATS* to celebrate their achievement! (*details to be announced).

THANK YOU ST. PAUL’S GOLFERS!!!
What a great day! Over 100 players enjoyed a wonderful round of golf at Mountain Gate Country Club on April 14 for the Fr. Tom Jones 2008 Golf Classic. In addition to feasting on breakfast, lunch and dinner, the golfers enjoyed Fr. John’s peripatetic beverage cart, a raffle, awards, and a great silent and live auction (including custom-made golf balls with advice from Sr. Stella printed on them).
The Tourney raised more than $30,000 for the school! Thank you to all the sponsors, donors, players, and volunteers!

Weekly
Readings/Reflections
May 4, 2008
Seventh Sunday of Easter
Reading 1
Acts 1:12-14
After Jesus had been taken up to heaven the apostles
returned to Jerusalem
from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem,
a sabbath day’s journey away.
When they entered the city
they went to the upper room where they were staying,
Peter and John and James and Andrew,
Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew
,
James son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot,
and Judas son of James.
All these devoted themselves with one accord to prayer,
together with some women,
and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.
Gospel
In 17:1-11a
Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said,
“Father, the hour has come.
Give glory to your son, so that your son may glorify you
,
just as you gave him authority over all people,
so that your son may give eternal life to all you gave him.
Now this is eternal life,
that they should know you, the only true God,
and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ.
I glorified you on earth
by accomplishing the work that you gave me to do.
Now glorify me, Father, with you,
with the glory that I had with you before the world began.
“I revealed your name to those whom you gave me out of the world.
They belonged to you, and you gave them to me,
and they have kept your word.
Now they know that everything you gave me is from you,
because the words you gave to me I have given to them,
and they accepted them and truly understood that I came from you,
and they have believed that you sent me.
I pray for them.
I do not pray for the world but for the ones you have given me,
because they are yours, and everything of mine is yours
and everything of yours is mine,
and I have been glorified in them.
And now I will no longer be in the world,
but they are in the world, while I am coming to you.
