ABOUT THE POPE

What does the word "Pope" mean?

The title of 'Pope' is one of many, and literally means "father" Pope is the spiritual father of the Roman Catholic Church, comprising over I billion members worldwide-the largest single Christian denomination. He is, above all else, a pastor, one who serves the word of God and who offers spiritual companionship to those entrusted to his care. As a priest, he celebrates the sacraments and offers encouragement to believers throughout the world. The Pope is also a bishop, the chief shepherd of the church of Rome. It is in this capacity, as Bishop of Rome, that many of his responsibility ties fall to the Pope.

Why is the Bishop of Rome important?

By tradition, St Peter and St. Paul were both martyred in Rome, and the community of believers has always held the Church of Rome in special esteem because of their reverence for these two significant men. The historical primacy of the Church of Rome emerged historically as the world changed over time. One of the great Christian centers-along with Constantinople (Istanbul, Alexandria, Antioch and Jerusalem - when the Roman Empire was divided between East and West in 1054, the Bishop of Rome was recognized as die primate of the Western Church.

What does a Pope do?

The roles and expectations of the Pope are not unlike those of any world leader in the modern world. but in recent times, there are some roles which have emerged with great significance.

Politician & Diplomat

'The fall of the papal states in 1870 freed the Pope to be a player on the international stage with a voice he could never have had as a monarch with a vested interest. Today, the Pope can speak with great authority as a voice and conscience for the world.

Influential Religious Leader

In 1986, John Paul 11 invited an eclectic group of religious leaders to Assisi-rabbis & imams, ministers & bishops--to pray for peace. Muslims, Jews, Sikhs, Christians, and more prayed in this hill-city. In that same year, the Pope visited the Jewish Synagogue of Rome, the first Pope to ever do so. While religious conflicts are often highlighted, it is also important to acknowledge the great goodness of humanity that is rooted in the respective religious traditions of the world. Dialogue among and between the religions is necessary into the future, and as John Paul 11 has demonstrated, the Pope is one who can offer much to the leadership of such a dialogue.

Governor of the Catholic Church

Law-
According to Canon Law, the universal law of the Catholic Church, the Pope is the supreme legislator, meaning that often the Pope's word is seen to be the final word on every question.

Teaching-
The Pope is the ultimate voice on the doctrine and teaching of the Catholic Church. He is bound by the tradition with which he is entrusted, and is an influential voice in developing teachings to guide us through an age of progress and development in the world.

Organization & Management
-The Pope is the head of the Curia, or "civil service'" which serves the universal Church. 'The Pope reviews and signs documents, gives directions on policy matters, and fosters good relations between the curia and the bishops of the universal Church.

Appointing Bishops-The Pope has exclusive authority to appoint bishops for the Roman Catholic Church.

Preserving Unity-
The Pope manages perceived threats to church unity as they arise in the persons of dissident theologians, defiant bishops and embarrassing clerics. This task is a difficult balancing of the good of the universal church and the good of the individual, of compassion and of goodness.

Weekly Readings/Reflections

April 10, 2005
Third Sunday of Easter
Psalm: Sunday 18

Reading I
Acts 2:14, 22-33

Then Peter stood up with the Eleven,
raised his voice, and proclaimed:
"You who are Jews, indeed all of you staying in Jerusalem.
Let this be known to you, and listen to my words.
You who are Israelites, hear these words.
Jesus the Nazorean was a man commended to you by God
with mighty deeds, wonders, and signs,
which God worked through him in your midst, as you yourselves know.
This man, delivered up by the set plan and foreknowledge of God,
you killed, using lawless men to crucify him.
But God raised him up, releasing him from the throes of death,
because it was impossible for him to be held by it.
For David says of him:
I saw the Lord ever before me,
with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed.
Therefore my heart has been glad and my tongue has exulted;
my flesh, too, will dwell in hope,
because you will not abandon my soul to the netherworld,
nor will you suffer your holy one to see corruption.
You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence'
"My brothers, one can confidently say to you
about the patriarch David that he died and was buried,
and his tomb is in our midst to this day.
But since he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn an oath to him
that he would set one of his descendants upon his throne,
he foresaw and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ,
that neither was he abandoned to the netherworld
nor did his flesh see corruption.
God raised this Jesus;
of this we are all witnesses.
Exalted at the right hand of God,
he received the promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father
and poured him forth, as you see and hear."

Reading II
1 Pt 1:17-21

Beloved:
If you invoke as Father him who judges impartially
according to each one's works,
conduct yourselves with reverence during the time of your sojourning,
realizing that you were ransomed from your futile conduct,
handed on by your ancestors,
not with perishable things like silver or gold
but with the precious blood of Christ
as of a spotless unblemished lamb.
He was known before the foundation of the world
but revealed in the final time for you,
who through him believe in God
who raised him from the dead and gave him glory,
so that your faith and hope are in God.

Gospel
Lk 24:13-35

That very day, the first day of the week,
two of Jesus' disciples were going
to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus,
and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred.
And it happened that while they were conversing and debating,
Jesus himself drew near and walked with them,
but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.
He asked them,
"What are you discussing as you walk along?"
They stopped, looking downcast.
One of them, named Cleopas, said to him in reply,
"Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem
who does not know of the things
that have taken place there in these days?"
And he replied to them, "What sort of things?"
They said to him,
"The things that happened to Jesus the Nazorean,
who was a prophet mighty in deed and word
before God and all the people,
how our chief priests and rulers both handed him over
to a sentence of death and crucified him.
But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel;
and besides all this,
it is now the third day since this took place.
Some women from our group, however, have astounded us:
they were at the tomb early in the morning
and did not find his body;
they came back and reported
that they had indeed seen a vision of angels
who announced that he was alive.
Then some of those with us went to the tomb
and found things just as the women had described,
but him they did not see."
And he said to them, "Oh, how foolish you are!
How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke!
Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things
and enter into his glory?"
Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets,
he interpreted to them what referred to him
in all the Scriptures.
As they approached the village to which they were going,
he gave the impression that he was going on farther.
But they urged him, "Stay with us,
for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over."
So he went in to stay with them.
And it happened that, while he was with them at table,
he took bread, said the blessing,
broke it, and gave it to them.
With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him,
but he vanished from their sight.
Then they said to each other,
"Were not our hearts burning within us
while he spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?"
So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem
where they found gathered together
the eleven and those with them who were saying,
"The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!"
Then the two recounted
what had taken place on the way
and how he was made known to them in the breaking of bread.

CONSOLATION PRIZE BOOTH

We’re looking forward to having the "Consolation Prize" booth at the Festival again. Last year’s booth was very successful thanks to the wonderful donations of toys we received from so many families.

This year, we’ll need even more toys and prizes. So, before you discard anything, think of us! Stuffed animals, fast food "kid’s meal" handouts, party favors you never used, you name it, we’ll probably take it. Please make sure the toys are not broken, dirty or shabby.

Hold onto your items for now, or call Dorothy Balfe or Madelyn Bailey to arrange for storage.

Thanks for your help - we can’t do it without you!
