“If we choose to use plants as medicine, we then become accountable for the wild gardens, their health, and their upkeep…We have reached a time in history when not to consider our relationship with the resources we use on this small and beautiful planet will be disastrous.”

~Rosemary Gladstar

From the Desk of Sr. Stella Maria, Principal:

It is with great anticipation that we look forward to Grandparents’ Day. Anne Marie Scibelli and her outstanding committee have covered every detail of this wonderful celebration. When the program has finished on Friday afternoon, we will need time to clear the yard of the tables, chairs and other various items associated with the day’s activities. Consequently, we will be having our After-School Pick-Up on Selby and Ohio. For this to work properly, we will be following the system we use on Festival days. The students, supervised by their teachers, will be in the following areas:

8th Grade: Directly in front of the Church on Ohio Ave
7th & 6th Grades: In front of the Rectory on Ohio Ave
5th Grade: Directly in front of the JCPC (lawn area) on Selby Ave
4th & 3rd Grades: At the side of the JCPC ( lawn area ) on Selby Ave
2nd & 1st Grades: On Selby (lawn area) South of main entry door
Kindergarten: In the driveway where the cars usually enter the school yard

This process for Pick-Up will begin at 2:30 and last until 3:15. There is no need to rush in order to arrive at 2:30. Your child will be supervised and safe until you arrive. Thank you for your cooperation.

Rejoice. 0 earth, in shining splendor.
radiant in the brightness of your Kinq
!

During Easter days, Christians should read Gerard Manley Hopkins’ poem That Nature is a Heraciitean Fire and of the Comfort of the Resurrection. The words of the poem are an explosion of images that crescendo into an incantation of splendor — ours, earth’s — in the resurrection of Christ, the “immortal diamond.”

It is an apt image: Christ the diamond. Forged in the depths of the earth, formed of carbon by heat and the pressure of time. Christ, the one who shines from every facet of the body, from within, a radiance of life.

We celebrate this Christ, who descended into the bowels of the earth and has made the abyss tremble in the light. Christ, who climbed the cross of pain and human injustice, charred by our mortality, now is the diamond. Christ, the immortal one, shines.

And what Christ is, all creation is destined to become. The earth, too, will be a diamond. The earth and all that is born of it will share the shining radiance of the One who has transformed our flesh. What Christ is, we will become.

Rejoice, then, 0 earth! Rejoice, 0 my soul! The pressure and the ravages of time will no longer harm you, for the One who is diamond fashions you into an immortal jewel. How is the fragile body, the much-abused earth, to be a diamond? Will we allow the transformation? And what will become of us?

Weekly Readings/Reflections

             Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
SUNDAY May 25, 2008

Reading 1
Dt 8:2-3, 14b-16a

Moses said to the people: "Remember how for forty years now the LORD, your God,
has directed all your journeying in the desert,
so as to test you by affliction and
find out whether or not it was your intention
to keep his commandments.
He therefore let you be afflicted with hunger,
and then fed you with manna,
a food unknown to you and your fathers,
in order to show you that not by bread alone does one live,
but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of the LORD.

"Do not forget the LORD, your God,
who brought you out of the land of Egypt,
that place of slavery;
who guided you through the vast and terrible desert
with its saraph serpents and scorpions,
its parched and waterless ground;
who brought forth water for you from the flinty rock
and fed you in the desert with manna,
a food unknown to your fathers."

Gospel
In 6:51-58

Jesus said to the Jewish crowds:
"I am the living bread that came down from heaven;
whoever eats this bread will live forever;
and the bread that I will give
is my flesh for the life of the world."

The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, "
How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"
Jesus said to them,
"Amen, amen, I say to you,
unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood,
you do not have life within you.
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood
has eternal life,
and I will raise him on the last day.
For my flesh is true food,
and my blood is true drink.
Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood
  remains in me and I in him.
Just as the living Father sent me
and I have life because of the Father,
so also the one who feeds on me
will have life because of me.
This is the bread that came down from heaven.
Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died,
whoever eats this bread will live forever."
