From the desk of Sister Stella

The Church of the twenty-first century will be, as it has always been, a church of many cultures, languages and traditions, yet simultaneously 0ne, as God is one--Father, Son and holy Spirit---unity in diversity."

From the desk of Sister Stella Maria, Principal:

In a few days the Cardinals will begin to select our new Pope. We pray that through the guidance of the Holy Spirit they will be directed to choose the man who will meet the needs of this challenging world. "Lord, you can read everyone's heart; show us therefore which of these cardinals you have chosen to represent you in this world." (Acts 1:25)

On behalf of our community we wish to thank and congratulate our new Paulist Women's Club officers for the year 2005--2006. We thank you for your spirit of generosity to serve in a leadership role during this anniversary year (70th) at St. Paul’s.

President: Julie Chait (Mrs. Howard Chait)

Vice President: Debbie Battaglia (Mrs. Richard Battaglia)

                 Treasurer: Mark Raineri

Parents, I am praying that after you have completed your tax report you will remember to read all of the WASC materials we mailed to you. When you have completed the questionnaire just place it in the stamp addressed envelope we provided for you and mail it to us. Once again thank you for your cooperation in this most important matter for our school. Due date: April 21st.

Kevin Berman wrote me a letter a few days ago with some very serious concerns. Some weeks ago a St. Paul’s Mom accused his daughter in high school and her high school friend of using drugs. The second Kevin received the news he immediately picked up his daughter and friend and had them tested for drugs. No sign of any drugs were found. This false information has been spread in our St. Paul's community. If you happen to be part of passing on or hearing this information, I ask you to please put an immediate stop to it. Thank You.

PARENTS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE

Nurture, don’t lecture, to promote a love of learning

You thought it would be fun to build a bird for the back yard. But as you were teaching your child how to use all the tools, you noticed that he had lost interest.

Teaching you child is important. When he asks for it ("I sure wish I knew how to…"), it can be a great way to spend time together.

But in some families, kids feel like they’re always in class. When they come home,
Dad is drilling them how to shoot free throws or how to cut the grass the right way. Turning everything into a lesson can be a surefire way to make kids lose interest.

Kids love to do things with their parents. Working together on a project can be one of the best ways for parents and children to learn more about each other.
But everything doesn’t have to turn into a chance to tech kids new skills. Sometimes, it’s just fun to putter around in the kitchen or the workshops.

So go slowly. If your child is working on a project let him do it his own way. You might ask if there’s anything you can do to help, but let it be his choice. If he hammers in the nail incorrect6ly, he’ll learn soon enough that it doesn’t hold the wood together.

Parish News

Pope John Paul II was a gifted writer and poet. His work, Roman Triptych: Meditations, which contains three long poems, has been regarded as his spiritual last testament. In the second poem, Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel becomes a background setting for the Pope’s personal reflections upon his own mortality – and the extraordinary conclave of cardinals that must gather after his death in order to select a new pontiff for the 21st century. An excerpt from the poem follows:

"Epilogue"

It is here, beneath this wondrous Sistine profusion of color that the Cardinals assemble –
the community responsible for the legacy of the keys of the Kingdom.
They come here, to this very place.
And once more Michelangelo wraps them in his vision.
"In Him we live and move and have our being."

Who is He?
Behold, the creating hand of the Almighty,
the Ancient One,
reaching towards Adam…
In the beginning God created…
He, who sees all things…

The colors of the Sistine will then speak the
word of the Lord:
Tu es Petrus1 - once heard by Simon, son of John.
"To you I will give the keys of the Kingdom."
Those entrusted with the legacy of the keys
gather here, letting themselves be enfolded
by the Sistine’s colors,
by the vision left to us by Michelangelo –

So it was in August, and again in October,
In the memorable year of the two Conclaves,
and so it will be once more, when the time comes,
after my death.
Michelangelo’s vision must then speak to them.
"Con-clave": a shared concern for the legacy of the keys,
the keys of the Kingdom.
Lo, they see themselves in the midst of the
Beginning and the End,
between the Day of Creation and the Day of Judgment…
It is granted man once to die, and thereafter, the
Judgement!

Final transparency and light.
The clarity of the events –
the clarity of consciences –
During the conclave Michelangelo must teach them –
Do not forget: Omnia nuda et aperta sunt ante oculos Eius.
You who see all, point to him!
He will point him out…

- John Paul II
1You are Peter…(cf. Mt. 16:18)

IN-N-OUT BURGER

The truck is coming tomorrow! Please tell your children to be patient, there will be lines and it will take longer than your usual hot lunch lines. They will be making burgers to order and there just is no quick way. I will have at least 8 people on my end to check off names and hand out the food. I will also have a list of parents and faculty who signed up.

While this is a great event it will take time! Any questions? Kelley workman

Grandparents Day Update!

The Grandparents Day Committee is in the process of calling all families that provided names and addresses of Grandparents and Special Friends to confirm their attendance on June 3rd.

It is very important that you respond back to us (no later than April 29th) so we can get an accurate count prior to mailing in early May.

The invitation/agenda will not include an RSVP portion so we are relying on you, the parent base, to help us confirm attendance. Questions? Issues? Call Susan Reed

First grade parents: Thank you so much for a great first week of traffic! I appreciate your arriving at 7:20 and for paying close attention to safety!

Kindergarten Parents:
I am offering two sessions to Kindergarten Parents interested in having an orientation prior to May. If you are new to St. Paul’s and have not done traffic before you should plan to attend one of the sessions. They will take place on Wednesday, April 27 after drop off at 7:50 am and on Thursday, April 28 at 7:50 am. The sessions will last thirty minutes. We will meet on the steps in front of the main entrance to the school. Bring the orange colored booklet that you received at your orientation in September as it has all of the information that we will be going over. This booklet is titled, "Traffic and Safety Program, Guidelines for Drop Off and Pick Up Parent Traffic Duty Position Descriptions."

Officer Tim Creedon
of the West Los Angeles Department of Transportation has been working to modify the traffic flow on Selby in the afternoon to ease congestion on Selby and to allow other non-school traffic to safely proceed north on Selby. Here is a note from Officer Tim re: Selby protocol, "Please drive in one single file line in the parking lane when you are approaching the school driveway during the dismissal time period. It is unlawful to obstruct the right of way of other north bound vehicle traffic on Selby Avenue."

Cars may form a single file line along Selby to the Convent Driveway only. Do not line up any further south! Do not line up onto Holman as well. We have been making an effort to have the gate open as early as possible to allow this lane of waiting cars to proceed into the yard to allow for a safe and efficient flow of traffic along Selby and off of Holman. We appreciate your cooperation and patience as we work on these details.

Final request: We are seeking a cell phone free zone in and around school. We ask for everyone’s vigilance in this regard. Remind your fellow parents and yourself.

Weekly Readings/Reflections

April 17, 2005
Fourth Sunday of Easter
Psalm: Sunday 19

Reading I
Acts 2:14a, 36-41

Then Peter stood up with the Eleven,
raised his voice, and proclaimed:
"Let the whole house of Israel know for certain
that God has made both Lord and Christ,
this Jesus whom you crucified."
Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart,
and they asked Peter and the other apostles,
"What are we to do, my brothers?"
Peter said to them,
"Repent and be baptized, every one of you,
in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins;
and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
For the promise is made to you and to your children
and to all those far off,
whomever the Lord our God will call."
He testified with many other arguments, and was exhorting them,
"Save yourselves from this corrupt generation."
Those who accepted his message were baptized,
and about three thousand persons were added that day
.
Reading II
1 Pt 2:20b-25

Beloved:
If you are patient when you suffer for doing what is good,
this is a grace before God.
For to this you have been called,
because Christ also suffered for you,
leaving you an example that you should follow in his footsteps.
He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.
When he was insulted, he returned no insult;
when he suffered, he did not threaten;
instead, he handed himself over to the one who judges justly.
He himself bore our sins in his body upon the cross,
so that, free from sin, we might live for righteousness.
By his wounds you have been healed.
For you had gone astray like sheep,
but you have now returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls

Gospel
Jn 10:1-10

Jesus said:
"Amen, amen, I say to you,
whoever does not enter a sheepfold through the gate
but climbs over elsewhere is a thief and a robber.
But whoever enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.
The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice,
as the shepherd calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
When he has driven out all his own,
he walks ahead of them, and the sheep follow him,
because they recognize his voice.
But they will not follow a stranger;
they will run away from him,
because they do not recognize the voice of strangers."
Although Jesus used this figure of speech,
the Pharisees did not realize what he was trying to tell them.
So Jesus said again, "Amen, amen, I say to you,
I am the gate for the sheep.
All who came before me are thieves and robbers,
but the sheep did not listen to them.
I am the gate.
Whoever enters through me will be saved,
and will come in and go out and find pasture.
A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy;
I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly."
