From the desk of Sister Stella

"Remember that the six most expensive words in business are: We've always done it that way."

From the Desk of Sister Stella Maria, Principal:

Each year at St. Paul's the faculty and I as we look back over the year, ask ourselves the question, how could we do what we do better. Upon reflection we come up with very concrete ways to improve.

Every six years the Western Association of Schools and Colleges provides an instrument for us to do an in-depth evaluation of all that we do. Currently we are in a process preparing for the visitation in Spring of 2006. We need major input from our school community. After Easter you will receive a packet which will includet he following:

                                    School Mission
                                    School Philosophy
                                    Schoolwide Learning Expectations
                                    Parent Questionnaire
It will be most important that you will reflect on each of these documents and return them to us with your comments/suggestions.

Questionnaires will also be filled out by the classroom Chaplins, the Faculty, the students Kg---3rd grade and students 4th--8th grade.

All of this information will be summarized and all the original responses will be filed for the WASC team to read

.Our congratulation to our seventh and eight grade students who have just completed their science faire projects. Students, we know that you have put much time and energy into this very worthwhile assignment. In high school you will understand more clearly the value of all that you have achieved and you will be very appreciative of your understanding of the Scientific Method.

Mrs.Nelson, on behalf of the parents and students we thank you for the careful day by day guidance you have given to each student, Congratulations!

On Friday March 18th, all students in grades three through eighth will have an opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Parents, mark your calendars and check the Lenten Bulletin for the church services during the Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday).
At noon on Good Friday, Chris Walker will lead the children's Stations of the Cross.

Attention 8th Grade Parents
: There is a meeting on Tuesday, April 5 from 7pm – 8pm in the JCPC to introduce to you the new program on Human Sexuality. 7th Grade parents are welcome to attend

Dear SPA Families:

The PWC Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, April 25th at Braemar Country Club in Tarzana. It is a lovely facility with a top-notch golf course. If you are interested in attending and/or playing in the tournament, please contact Caroline Moynagh to register. Make note that you do not have to play in order to attend the dinner following the event and you are not obligated to attend the dinner if you wish to play but not stay into the evening.

As many of you know, our parish is currently collecting pledges for Together In Mission. The parish’s goal is to increase participation from the meager 7% of total parish families who contributed last year. Currently, the participation percentage has improved to 11% of total parish families. The campaign continues through the year.

Finally, the PWC Nominating Committee met this week to elect officers for the 2005-2006 school year. The result of the election will be announced at the Spring Sing on April 13th and will appear in the epistle that week.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all!

Parish News

Dear Parishioners and Visitors,

The proclamation of the Passion story next week on Passion / Palm Sunday and on Good Friday is an invitation for us to journey with Christ through Cross to Resurrection. Where do we find ourselves in the Passion narrative? Who is the Crucified One for us? These Scriptures were inspired and handed down to be a mirror we hold up to examine ourselves, not a finger of guilt pointed at others "back then" or now. This is especially important to bear in mind with the many references to the "Jews" that occur in these gospel chapters.

Gospel references to the "Jews" as a group hostile to Jesus reflect more the growing tension and separation between Jewish Christians and others Jews in later decades of the first century A.D. (when the Gospels were written) than simply the situation of Jesus’ life, ministry, and death. Jesus did indeed clash with some Pharisees during his earthly ministry; some of the Temple priestly authorities in Jerusalem no doubt saw Jesus as a threat and had him arrested. Perhaps this small group of his compatriots were implicated in Jesus’ death, not many or a whole people. Jesus was judged and executed by the Roman imperial authorities (Pontius Pilate) in Jerusalem, crucified (a Roman punishment), not stoned (the Jewish form of execution). That is why the Second Vatican Council took pains to reject the centuries’ old charge of "deicide" which had become part and parcel of Christian anti-Semitism.

Alongside the influence of intra-Jewish divisions, the Gospels also carry memories of some Pharisees as "close to the kingdom of God" and the Acts of the Apostles recounts that some of them joined the early Christian community. The Gospels and Acts even note some members of the priestly class as sympathetic to the Jesus and the Christian community. Jesus himself, his mother, his group of Twelve, and most of his disciples in the early Church were themselves Jewish. So, it is hardly accurate to take the later conflict between Jewish Christians and emerging rabbinical Judaism (reflected especially in Matthew and John) as the basis for a global Christian attitude toward "the Jews." Sadly, that is what happened in many Christian lands and centuries, a betrayal of Christ rather than a true following of his Way.

Instead, we might recall the words of St. Paul: "They are Israelites; theirs the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; theirs the patriarchs, and from them, according to the flesh, is the Messiah" (Romans 9:4-5) and "The gifts and the call of God are irrevocable" (Romans 11:29).

Officer Tim has requested that we use the large orange cones in the afternoon to ease congestion on Selby. To make the cones work, please try the following. We will be evaluating the effectiveness of the cones over time.

1. Slow down as you approach the cones that mark an entrance lane to the driveway.
2. Please refrain from using a cell phone as you approach St. Paul’s – this is dangerous!
3. As you make the turn be sure to avoid turning too widely as you may "turn" into Selby northbound traffic.
4. Do not line up at the end of the lane if traffic is not moving, enter the lane when traffic is moving and the gate is open. This is very critical. Those doing traffic will direct you, please do what they direct you to do!
5. If this seems inconvenient, try arriving a little earlier and parking in the neighborhood.
6. Every effort will be made to make this system safe, user friendly and efficient.

Thanks for your cooperation and patience!!!

Weekly Readings/Reflections

March 20, 2005
Palm Sunday of the Lord's Passion
Psalm: Sunday 15

Reading I
Is 50:4-7

The Lord GOD has given me
a well-trained tongue,
that I might know how to speak to the weary
a word that will rouse them.
Morning after morning
he opens my ear that I may hear;
and I have not rebelled,
have not turned back.
I gave my back to those who beat me,
my cheeks to those who plucked my beard;
my face I did not shield
from buffets and spitting.
The Lord GOD is my help,
therefore I am not disgraced;
I have set my face like flint,
knowing that I shall not be put to shame.

Reading II
Phil 2:6-11

Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God
something to be grasped.
Rather, he emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
coming in human likeness;
and found human in appearance,
he humbled himself,
becoming obedient to the point of death,
even death on a cross.
Because of this, God greatly exalted him
and bestowed on him the name
which is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus
every knee should bend,
of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue confess that
Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father

.Gospel
Mt 14--27:66 or 27:11-54

Jesus stood before the governor, Pontius Pilate, who questioned him,
"Are you the king of the Jews?"
Jesus said, "You say so."
And when he was accused by the chief priests and elders,
he made no answer.
Then Pilate said to him,
"Do you not hear how many things they are testifying against you?"
But he did not answer him one word,
so that the governor was greatly amazed.

Now on the occasion of the feast
the governor was accustomed to release to the crowd
one prisoner whom they wished.
And at that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas.
So when they had assembled, Pilate said to them,
"Which one do you want me to release to you,
Barabbas, or Jesus called Christ?"
For he knew that it was out of envy
that they had handed him over.
While he was still seated on the bench,
his wife sent him a message,
"Have nothing to do with that righteous man.
I suffered much in a dream today because of him."
The chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds
to ask for Barabbas but to destroy Jesus.
The governor said to them in reply,
"Which of the two do you want me to release to you?"
They answered, "Barabbas!"
Pilate said to them,
"Then what shall I do with Jesus called Christ?"
They all said,
"Let him be crucified!"
But he said,
"Why? What evil has he done?"
They only shouted the louder,
"Let him be crucified!"
When Pilate saw that he was not succeeding at all,
but that a riot was breaking out instead,
he took water and washed his hands in the sight of the crowd,
saying, "I am innocent of this man's blood.
Look to it yourselves."
And the whole people said in reply,
"His blood be upon us and upon our children."
Then he released Barabbas to them,
but after he had Jesus scourged,
he handed him over to be crucified.

Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus inside the praetorium
and gathered the whole cohort around him.
They stripped off his clothes
and threw a scarlet military cloak about him.
Weaving a crown out of thorns, they placed it on his head,
and a reed in his right hand.
And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying,
"Hail, King of the Jews!"
They spat upon him and took the reed
and kept striking him on the head.
And when they had mocked him,
they stripped him of the cloak,
dressed him in his own clothes,
and led him off to crucify him.

As they were going out, they met a Cyrenian named Simon;
this man they pressed into service
to carry his cross.

And when they came to a place called Golgotha
--which means Place of the Skull--,
they gave Jesus wine to drink mixed with gall.
But when he had tasted it, he refused to drink.
After they had crucified him,
they divided his garments by casting lots;
then they sat down and kept watch over him there.
And they placed over his head the written charge against him:
This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.
Two revolutionaries were crucified with him,
one on his right and the other on his left.
Those passing by reviled him, shaking their heads and saying,
"You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,
save yourself, if you are the Son of God,
and come down from the cross!"
Likewise the chief priests with the scribes and elders mocked him and said,
"He saved others; he cannot save himself.
So he is the king of Israel!
Let him come down from the cross now,
and we will believe in him.
He trusted in God;
let him deliver him now if he wants him.
For he said, 'I am the Son of God.'"
The revolutionaries who were crucified with him
also kept abusing him in the same way.

From noon onward, darkness came over the whole land
until three in the afternoon.
And about three o'clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice,
"Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?"
which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
Some of the bystanders who heard it said,
"This one is calling for Elijah."
Immediately one of them ran to get a sponge;
he soaked it in wine, and putting it on a reed,
gave it to him to drink.
But the rest said,
"Wait, let us see if Elijah comes to save him."
But Jesus cried out again in a loud voice,
and gave up his spirit.

Here all kneel and pause for a short time.

And behold, the veil of the sanctuary
was torn in two from top to bottom.
The earth quaked, rocks were split, tombs were opened,
and the bodies of many saints who had fallen asleep were raised.
And coming forth from their tombs after his resurrection,
they entered the holy city and appeared to many.
The centurion and the men with him who were keeping watch over Jesus
feared greatly when they saw the earthquake
and all that was happening, and they said,
"Truly, this was the Son of God!"

SPA SKI CLUB

SPA SKi CLUB

I want to thank everyone who has participated in our ski trips over the past 6 years. We began with a one day trip to Big Bear 6 years ago with about 60 people. Our trip last week had 64 families totaling 250 people.

It has been a labor of love for me and my family to organize these trips as a way for St. Paul’s families to enjoy a family winter getaway together. Participation and enthusiastic support on the part of the St. Paul’s community have made the annual ski trips a success.

My family and I want to thank all of you for the wonderful and unexpected gift certificate you provided to us. It was extremely generous and I assure you we will put it to good use.

Finally, I ask that you give your full support to Wendy Lightbourn and her family as they take over the job of organizing the trips. Your continued support is the key.

God bless all of you.
John Plueger
