From the desk of Sister Stella

"When Jesus invites us to share
The Bread of life from Heaven
He also invites us to share
The bread and riches of this earth."

From the desk of SSM:

The parents of second grade students of our parish with the support of the teachers and Parish Staff have completed one year of reflecting and praying with their children, in preparation for the reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. On Saturday Feb. 1st the children, with their parents, participated in a prayerful service during which time the children received the Sacrament. Parents took advantage of the sacred moment and also received the sacrament or asked for a blessing. Many parents found the ceremony more meaningful because they had spent time on a regular basis preparing the child. In an interview with various staff members the parents let us know that the child was ready to receive the sacrament. We are following very carefully," The parents are the Primary Educators".

Last Monday night we had the first of four sessions with parents to begin the preparation for First Communion. We gave the parents some very beautiful and helpful material to use with the child. The classroom teachers are teaching the theology of the sacraments each day as part of the child's religious education.

Our present first grade parents began their journey of Faith with their children in January and will continue through June 2004 when the children, if they are ready, will receive First Communion. (Parents Decision)

On Thursday the oldest or only child took home information regarding nominations for the 2003- 2004 Paulist Women's Club (Parents Working for Children) Board.
Please take time to reflect and fill in some suggestions and return the forms.
Each year the accomplishment of the parents led by the board gets more incredible. Thank You for your on going caring and interest.

Don’t forget to empty out your child’s library of books no longer needed. Drop those books in the boxes outside my office door. Thank you for helping children in need.

Weekly Readings/Reflections

Next Sunday, February 9, is the Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Please read and reflect on these readings during the week (alone or with family and friends), and come to next Sunday’s liturgy prepared to listen attentively to the proclamation of the Word of God.

READING I Job 7:1-4, 6-7

Job spoke, saying:
Is not man's life on earth a drudgery?

Are not his days those of hirelings?
He is a slave who longs for the shade, a hireling who waits for his wages.
So I have been assigned months of misery, and troubled nights have been allotted to me.
If in bed I say, "When shall I arise?" then the night drags on;
I am filled with restlessness until the dawn.
My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle; they come to an end without hope.
Remember that my life is like the wind; I shall not see happiness again.

READING II 1 Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-23

Brothers and sisters:
If I preach the gospel, this is no reason for me to boast,
for an obligation has been imposed on me, and woe to me if I do not preach it!
If I do so willingly, I have a recompense,
but if unwillingly, then I have been entrusted with a stewardship.
What then is my recompense?
That, when I preach, I offer the gospel free of charge
so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel.
Although I am free in regard to all, I have made myself a slave to all
so as to win over as many as possible.
To the weak I became weak, to win over the weak.
I have become all things to all, to save at least some.
All this I do for the sake of the gospel, so that I too may have a share in it.

GOSPEL Mark 1:29-39

On leaving the synagogue Jesus entered the house of Simon and Andrew with James and John.
Simon's mother-in-law lay sick with a fever.
They immediately told him about her.
He approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up.
Then the fever left her and she waited on them.
When it was evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were ill or possessed by demons.
The whole town was gathered at the door.
He cured many who were sick with various diseases,
and he drove out many demons, not permitting them to speak because they knew him.
Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed.
Simon and those who were with him pursued him and on finding him said, "Everyone is looking for you."
He told them, "Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also.
For this purpose have I come."
So he went into their synagogues, preaching and driving out demons throughout the whole of Galilee.

Fifth Sunday (readings for February 9)

READINGS Life doesn’t always go my way; I change as God needs me for the sake of the Gospel:
Jesus heals people of their diseases, then goes out to preach.

WHAT I HEAR What do I ask from the Lord: Healing? Patience? Adaptability?

MY FAITH JOURNEY How do I adjust my life to be an effective disciple?

FOR CHILDREN Do I know anyone who is sick and needs my help and prayers?
Sit quietly for a minute and ask Jesus to be with them. Then ask him how you can help.
