From the desk of Sister Stella

"Love doesn't just sit there, like a stone, it has to be made, like bread; remade all the time, made   new."  (Ursula K. Guin - Writer)

From the desk of Sister Stella Maria, Principal

Happy Valentine's Day to all family and friends may this day, which reminds us each year of loyalty to our spouses, family and friends be a day of renewal and reconciliation, if necessary.

On Saturday, Feb.4th at 10:30 am all second graders of our parish will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Parents, we thank you for walking the journey of faith preparing your children for this very important experience in their young lives. We congratulate you for living up to the belief that parents are the primary educators of their children.

The visitation of our WASC team is just three weeks away. The members of the team will meet with the priests, teachers, staff, representatives of the student body, members of the school board and members of the Paulist Women’s Club Board.  The time scheduled for the School Board and for the PWC Board is February 23rd at 8;00 am in the multipurpose room.  If you are unable to attend, please inform the Board President who in turn will let me know. This meeting will last approximately 45 minutes.

Yes, we are doing the Read-a thon for the children of St. Joseph's Center. It will open on Ash Wednesday, March 1st and close on Holy Thursday, April 13th.  Lent is a good time for the students to participate in this special program called READ-TO -FEED by the children. The day we close is the day that Jesus gave us the BREAD OF LIFE---THE EUCHARIST.

Parents, we find it necessary to call your attention to the following excerpt taken from the Parent-Student Handbook on Personal Grooming. Please reread it and discuss with   your children. Sad to say some students just roll out of bed, jump into an unkempt uniform---face not washed, hair not combed---a number of student walk into school with wet hair which remains uncombed for the rest of the day.  Personal appearance frequently speaks very loudly about our attitudes and self esteem.

PERSONAL GROOMING

As well as being in full uniform, each St. Paul the Apostle student must be properly groomed. A few suggestions follow:

        Daily bath or showers with soap;

        Regular and frequent hair washing with shampoo;

        Combed/groomed hair and clean nails;

        Deodorant used daily when necessary;

        Daily tooth brushing with toothpaste prior to coming to school;

Part of good grooming includes regular and frequent laundering of uniform apparel.

        Daily clean underwear and socks;

        Shirts/Blouses should be changed daily;

        Skirts,, shorts, long pants and sweatshirts require frequent laundering;

        Sweatshirts must be worn properly indoors and not tied around the body.

As our students begin to mature, each needs to be aware of appropriate and acceptable hygiene. After a day that includes hard play, physical education or heat exposure, bathing is a must.

When thirty students work together in a limited space, cleanliness is definitely appreciated by all.

This is a case where “CLEANLINESS IS NEXT TO GODLINESS”.

ART LITERACY: Grooming requirements:

FOR THE SAFETY OF THE STUDENTS, IT IS REQUIRED THAT IN THE ART LITERACY CLASS HAIR MUST BE PULLED BACK AND COMPLETELY AWAY FROM THE EYES.

Note:   a) GOOD GROOMING CONSIDERED A PART OF THE UNIFORM CODE.
            b) Parents who have a problem on specific day with uniform compliance must send a note in the morning with their child explaining the problem and detailing the time it will take for compliance.  This must be a reasonable request

From Fr. Tom Pastor

Dear St. Paul the Apostle Parishioners,

In the last few days, I have encountered yet another twist in my medical saga. Me dermatologist excised what I thought was a “boil” from the skin on my chest some days ago. The bad news is that when the excision was examined it turned out to be what is called a Merkel cell carcinoma. The good news is that the margins of the excised tissue sample (which was large) showed no cancer cells.

Merkel cell CA’s can be pretty bad news if not caught early and treated aggressively. Luckily, this one has been caught very early. (I’m attentive to bumps on & under my skin…as you should be too!) To treat this Merkel cell tumor requires a deeper & wider excision at the tumor site than was previously done to provide for the therapeutically recommended “margins.” This outpatient procedure is scheduled for Tuesday, January 31st at UCLA. As you might well guess, I’ll be out of the office for a few days to do some healing up. The medical follow-up to this procedure will be determined by what, if anything, is seen in the tissue from this latest excision.

I once again ask for your prayers. They have been a great aid to me in the past…as I’m sure they will be now.

Weekly Readings/Reflections

February 5, 2006

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reading I
Jb 7:1-4, 6-7

Job spoke, saying:
Is not man’s life on earth a drudgery?
Are not his days those of hirelings?
He is a slave who longs for the shade,
a hireling who waits for his wages.
So I have been assigned months of misery,
and troubled nights have been allotted to me.
If in bed I say, “When shall I arise?”
then the night drags on;
I am filled with restlessness until the dawn.
My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle;
they come to an end without hope.
Remember that my life is like the wind;
I shall not see happiness again.

Reading II
1 Cor 9:16-19, 22-23

Brothers and sisters:
If I preach the gospel, this is no reason for me to boast,
for an obligation has been imposed on me,
and woe to me if I do not preach it!
If I do so willingly, I have a recompense,
but if unwillingly, then I have been entrusted with a stewardship.
What then is my recompense?
That, when I preach,
I offer the gospel free of charge
so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel.

Although I am free in regard to all,
I have made myself a slave to all
so as to win over as many as possible.
To the weak I became weak, to win over the weak.
I have become all things to all, to save at least some.
All this I do for the sake of the gospel,
so that I too may have a share in it.

Gospel
Mk 1:29-39

On leaving the synagogue
Jesus entered the house of Simon and Andrew with James and John.
Simon’s mother-in-law lay sick with a fever.
They immediately told him about her.
He approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up.
Then the fever left her and she waited on them.

When it was evening, after sunset,
they brought to him all who were ill or possessed by demons.
The whole town was gathered at the door.
He cured many who were sick with various diseases,
and he drove out many demons,
not permitting them to speak because they knew him.

Rising very early before dawn, he left
and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed.
Simon and those who were with him pursued him
and on finding him said, “Everyone is looking for you.”
He told them, “Let us go on to the nearby villages
that I may preach there also.
For this purpose have I come.”
So he went into their synagogues,
preaching and driving out demons throughout the whole of Galilee.
