"TWO SETS OF 3s: NEVER LIE, NEVER CHEAT, and NEVER STEAL
DON'T WHINE, DON'T COMPLAIN, DONT MAKE EXCUSES
(Coach Wooden and Dad Joshua Wooden)

From the desk of Sister Stella Maria, Principal:

Paulist Choristers of California present their beautiful Christmas Concert on Saturday December 10th at 7pm in St. Paul the Apostle Church. Give your family a Christmas treat and come and enjoy a deeply spiritual experience.

Ascension School, an inner city school is now our sister school. Each one of our students is giving a little gift to each student at Ascension. Kindergarten to kindergarten an so on to grade eight. The teachers at each grade level are planning this activity with their individual classes. On Wednesday Dec. 14th between 10:30 and noon the gifts will be picked up and taken to Ascension. Please support your child in this activity.

On Thursday, Dec. 8th the church celebrates the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. It is a holy day and all Catholics are expected to make Mass part of their day. The school will have a Mass at 8:15 for all students including Kindergarten.

On Friday, December 9th grades three through eight will have a reconciliation service in church at 8:15. Fr. Paul, Mrs. Gascou and fifth grade students have prepared it.

December 14th the kindergarten will sing for our Seniors and guests. Eight grade students will help escort the seniors from their parking place to their tables.

December 15th report cards will go home.

December 16th School will start at 8 am. At 10:30 we will start seating for our Christmas concert in church. All students will come to school dressed in warm brightly colored Christmas clothes. Dress should be appropriate for performance---no jeans or sloppy baggy pants.

If needed, music teachers will give directions to students who may need to take the part of a character. Kindergarten will attend this concert but they will not sing as they have just had their concert. After the concert all students will return to class to prepare for dismissal.

Merry Christmas.

Sharon’s Christmas Prayer

Among John Shea's poems, one finds a wonderful little piece titled "Sharon’s Christmas Prayer."
With his permission, I’d like to share it with you here.

She was five, sure of the facts,
and recited them with solemnity, convinced every word was revelation.

She said,
they were so poor
They had only peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to ea
t and they went a long way from home
without getting lost.
The lady rode a donkey, the man walked,
and the baby was inside the lady.
They had to stay in a stable
With an ox and an ass (hee-hee)
But the Three Rich Men found them
Because a star lited the roof.
Shepherds came and you could
Pet the sheep but not feed them.
Then the baby was borned.
And do you know who he was?
Her quarter eyes inflated to silver dollars.
The baby was God.
And she jumped in the air,
Whirled round, dove into the sofa,
And buried her head under the cushion,
Which is the only proper response
to the Good News of the Incarnation.

Weekly Readings/Reflections

December 11, 2005
Third Sunday of Advent
Psalm: Sunday 1

Reading I
Is 61:1-2a, 10-11

The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me,
because the LORD has anointed me;
he has sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor,
to heal the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives
and release to the prisoners,
to announce a year of favor from the LORD
and a day of vindication by our God.
I rejoice heartily in the LORD,
in my God is the joy of my soul;
for he has clothed me with a robe of salvation
and wrapped me in a mantle of justice,
like a bridegroom adorned with a diadem,
like a bride bedecked with her jewels.
As the earth brings forth its plants,
and a garden makes its growth spring up,
so will the Lord GOD make justice and praise
spring up before all the nations.

Reading II
1 Thes 5:16-24

Brothers and sisters:
Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing.
In all circumstances give thanks,
for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.
Do not quench the Spirit.
Do not despise prophetic utterances.
Test everything; retain what is good.
Refrain from every kind of evil.
May the God of peace make you perfectly holy
and may you entirely, spirit, soul, and body,
be preserved blameless for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The one who calls you is faithful,
and he will also accomplish it.

Gospel
Jn 1:6-8, 19-28

A man named John was sent from God.
He came for testimony, to testify to the light,
so that all might believe through him.
He was not the light,
but came to testify to the light.
And this is the testimony of John.
When the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests
and Levites to him
to ask him, "Who are you?"
He admitted and did not deny it,
but admitted, " am not the Christ."
So they asked him,
"What are you then? Are you Elijah?"
And he said, "I am not."
"Are you the Prophet?"
He answered, "No."
So they said to him,
"Who are you, so we can give an answer to those who sent us?
What do you have to say for yourself?"
He said:
"I am the voice of one crying out in the desert,
‘make straight the way of the Lord,’
as Isaiah the prophet said."
Some Pharisees were also sent.
They asked him,
"Why then do you baptize
if you are not the Christ or Elijah or the Prophet?"
John answered them,
"I baptize with water;
but there is one among you whom you do not recognize,
the one who is coming after me,
whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie."
This happened in Bethany across the Jordan,
where John was baptizing.
