“Radiant Creator, awaken us to your presence. Jesus, Light of all Lights, kindle love in our hearts. Spirit of Illumination, guide our paths each day during this

Advent Season.”

From the Desk of Sister Stella Maria, Principal:

Reflection for the First Week of Advent:

       SUNNDAY DECEMBER 3

1ST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

The season of Advent is upon us, a time when we prepare to celebrate the coming of Jesus, our Lord and Saviour. We are caught up in a multitude of tasks: buying gifts, writing cards, baking treats, visiting with loved ones. Some of us may have travel plans—but we know what is said about the best-laid plans. There is no guarantee that our plans will ever be realized.

God’s plans, however, are always fulfilled. In today’s first reading, the Lord says he will come to save his people. And God did just that: two thousand years ago in a stable in Bethlehem when a tiny babe; both human and divine, came into our world. The greatest gift the world has ever known!

In today’s gospel, Jesus speaks of the day when he will return “with power and great glory.” He urges us to be prepared to stand before him. ‘Be on guard,” he pleads; “be alert.” Jesus asks us to free ourselves from earthly things and prepare for the moment of our redemption.

Paul sums up Jesus’ desire for us: “Abound in love for one another and for all.” As we joyfully await the Feast of the Nativity, let us mark our Advent path with the signs of love: acceptance, patience, caring, compassion, and little acts of kindness and forgiveness.

              LIVING WITH CHRIST DECEMBER 2006

The following website has helpful and inspirational Advent reflections:

              www.creighton.edu/Collaborativeministry/advent/firstweek.html

The Nativity Story is a movie rated PG 13. Please check it out before you take your younger children to see it. The following comment is from the Screenwriter, Mike Rich:

“We live in a time when the month of December has become fast and hectic…we have little time to ponder what Christmas means. If this film can provide a two-hour window for families to experience this journey of faith and will spark a conversation among them about the faith that Mary, Joseph and the other characters show, then it will be a wonderful success.”

Our most sincere thanks to the Danny Amos Family for devoting the First Advent Sunday to a wonderful wreath making festival.  Thank you! And a heartfelt thanks to all of the volunteers and participants of this event!

On this First Sunday, during the Liturgy, Fr. Brad informed us that Fr. Tom has made the decision to discontinue his chemo treatment. As always, we will continue to pray with the Faith that is capable of moving mountains. In due time, Fr. Tom will give us his own heath report; I am sure that a blog will soon be published on the Parish website. His faith is strong and he is regaining strength.

Are you helping your child learn to remember?

Your child forgot her jacket again. She forgot to bring her flute, too.

Teaching your child the skills she needs to remember things also helps her become more responsible.

Are you giving your child the tools she needs to build her memory skills? Answer yes or no to each statement:

__1 I ask my child to repeat important things she needs to remember back to me three times
__2. We use checklists and post them in convenient spots—a list of morning chores in my child’s room, a list of what goes to school by the back door.
__3. We believe in “a place for everything:’ Jf the book hag is always hanging on a hook by the back door, it will get to school.

__4. We use sticky notes to help us remember things.
__5. We make a game of remembering things. We make up rhymes and sayings “I take my fancy flute on Friday:’

How did you do?

Mostly yes answers mean you’re helping your child learn memory skills that will help in school and in life. Mostly nos? Check the quiz for some suggestions to improve your child’s memory

Weekly Readings/Reflections

DECEMBER 10  2nd Sunday of Advent

Reading 1
Baruch 5:1-9

Jerusalem, take off your robe of mourning and misery;
put on the splendor of glory from God forever:
wrapped in the cloak of justice from God,
bear on your head the mitre
that displays the glory of the eternal name.
For God will show all the earth your splendor:
you will be named by God forever
the peace of justice, the glory of God(s worship.

Up, Jerusalem! stand upon the heights;
look to the east and see your children
gathered from the east and the west
at the word of the Holy One,
rejoicing that they are remembered by God.
Led away on foot by their enemies they left you:
but God will bring them back to you
borne aloft in glory as on royal thrones.
For God has commanded
that every lofty mountain be made low,
and that the age-old depths and gorges
be filled to level ground,
that Israel may advance secure in the glory of God.
The forests and every fragrant kind of tree
have overshadowed Israel at God(s command;
for God is leading Israel in joy
by the light of his glory,
with his mercy and justice for company.

Gospel
Luke 3:1-6

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar,
when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea,
and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee,
and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region
of Ituraea and Trachonitis,
and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene,
during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas,
the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the desert.
John went throughout the whole region of the Jordan,
proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins,
as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah:
A voice of one crying out in the desert:
“Prepare the way of the Lord,
make straight his paths.
Every valley shall be filled
and every mountain and hill shall be made low.
The winding roads shall be made straight,
and the rough ways made smooth,
and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.”
