From the desk of Sister Stella

A Note from Father Tom . .
.
Dear St. Paul’s Parishioners,

A quick note to let you note I am on the road to recovery and am very much looking forward to being back in your midst in the not too distant future. The surgery I informed you about in September went very well and the results are excellent. I spent twelve days at the UCLA Medical Center before being sent home. Joy, joy, joy! Unfortunately, post-surgically I contracted a staph infection which, a couple of days after me return home, began clearly showing itself and lead to my re-hospitalization for another nine days.

The combination of the surgery and the post-surgical infection really took the wind out of my sails and left me quite weakened. Slowly but surely I’m regaining the weight, stamina and energy I’ve lost through these adventures. But the emphasis, much to my dismay, is most definitely on SLOWLY. So I cannot tell you when I’ll be back with you but can assure you I’m following my prescribed medications and exercises to see that the day comes sooner rather than later.

I am most grateful for the many cards and the prayerful support you have provided. I have never felt "alone" through these many days and that has been a great comfort and provided strength through some interesting moments.

Blessings to all of you. I’ll see you all when I see you . . . but hopefully not too far down the road
.
Fr. Tom

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL OF OUR FAMILIES

Our most sincere congratulations to our eight-grade varsity volley ball team
and to their coaches. The team won the CYO championship -- best of sixty-five teams and also won the Delphic League Championship (Private schools League).
Team Parents, Miss Suizzo appreciates your incredible support--she was totally surprised by the magnificent flower arrangement you had delivered to the school for her. Thank you.

What is WASC? I am sharing this information with you to make sure you understand all of the details of WASC especially parents new to our school this year.

Western Association of Schools and Colleges is an accreditating organization which requires schools to take a very serious look at who they are and what they are doing every six years with ongoing review in the between years.

St. Paul the Apostle School has since 1970 been accredited every six years.
Our last accreditation was in Spring 2000 and the next one is Spring 2006.

Just a reminder last Spring if you remember we did the Parent Survey, Student Survey, Faculty Survey, and Clergy Survey.

The following is what is involved in the accreditation process.

Chapter One: Student/Community Profile and supporting Data.

Chapter Two: Progress Report (Recommendations from 2000)

Chapter Three: Schoolwide Learning Expectations (ESLRS)

Chapter Four: Self-Study Findings

Chapter Five: School Improvement Action Plan

Chapter Six- Implementation of School Improvement Action Plan

Where are we as a school in this whole process?

We hope to complete Chapters Five and six and critique the entire report
on November 21,22,23. We will then send it to our chair who lives in Northern California to review. We hope to send it to print before Christmas Vacation.

On Jan. 9th the Chair with her team will come to St. Paul’s and spend the afternoon working together and planning for the visit on Feb 21,22,23.
On the afternoon of Jan. 9th the chair and visiting team will be introduced to the faculty, school board and the PWC board during a reception in the multipurpose room.
Also on Jan 9th they will each receive a copy of our self-study, which they will take with them to study. When they return in February they will spend three full days in the school during which time they will:

visit all classrooms
visit with students
interview teachers
interview principal
Interview Pastor
meet with parents--School Board, PWC

Basically, in those three days they want to see are we doing what we say in our self-study we are doing.

If you have any questions about this whole process, please don't hesitate to ask.
In the near future, look for an evaluation of our Parent-Teacher-Conference process. We would like your input.

Parish News

... Letter from Fr. John Duffy

First, let me say that neither Fr. Tom, or Fr. Paul, or me, have been asked to leave - so if you hear rumors, they are completely untrue. When we know something about Paulist staffing, and when we know about parish staffing, we will talk to you about it in an appropriate and timely manner.

If you perceive this as difficult for our parish, it is. But it is no less difficult for any of us Paulists. We can use your understanding and prayers still, as you can expect ours.

All of a sudden, the new boat is being prepared. We are at the threshold of a new close encounter with God. We know this, because this is the history and wisdom of the Church. Let’s keep seeking the wisdom of God together, and find the new ways and graces God is giving us to create an ever knew world in God’s love as it is interpreted in the mysterious workings of the Church.

Fr. Brad Schoeberle, CSP

Weekly Readings/Reflections

November 20, 2005
Thirty-Fourth or Last Sunday in Ordinary Time
The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King
Psalm: Sunday 50

Reading I
Ez 34:11-12, 15-17

Thus says the Lord GOD:
I myself will look after and tend my sheep.
As a shepherd tends his flock
when he finds himself among his scattered sheep,
so will I tend my sheep.
I will rescue them from every place where they were scattered
when it was cloudy and dark.
I myself will pasture my sheep;
I myself will give them rest, says the Lord GOD.
The lost I will seek out,
the strayed I will bring back,
the injured I will bind up,
the sick I will heal,
but the sleek and the strong I will destroy,
shepherding them rightly.
As for you, my sheep, says the Lord GOD,
I will judge between one sheep and another,
between rams and goats.

Reading II
1 Cor 15:20-26, 28

Brothers and sisters:
Christ has been raised from the dead,
the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
For since death came through man,
the resurrection of the dead came also through man.
For just as in Adam all die,
so too in Christ shall all be brought to life,
but each one in proper order:
Christ the firstfruits;
then, at his coming, those who belong to Christ;
then comes the end,
when he hands over the kingdom to his God and Father,
when he has destroyed every sovereignty
and every authority and power.
For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.
The last enemy to be destroyed is death.
When everything is subjected to him,
then the Son himself will also be subjected
to the one who subjected everything to him,
so that God may be all in all.

Gospel
Mt 25:31-46

Jesus said to his disciples:
"When the Son of Man comes in his glory,
and all the angels with him,
he will sit upon his glorious throne,
and all the nations will be assembled before him.
And he will separate them one from another,
as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
Then the king will say to those on his right,
'Come, you who are blessed by my Father.
Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
For I was hungry and you gave me food,
I was thirsty and you gave me drink,
a stranger and you welcomed me,
naked and you clothed me,
ill and you cared for me,
in prison and you visited me.’
Then the righteous will answer him and say,
'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you,
or thirsty and give you drink?
When did we see you a stranger and welcome you,
or naked and clothe you?
When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?’
And the king will say to them in reply,
'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did
for one of the least brothers of mine, you did for me.’
Then he will say to those on his left,
'Depart from me, you accursed,
into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
For I was hungry and you gave me no food,
I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,
a stranger and you gave me no welcome,
naked and you gave me no clothing,
ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.’
Then they will answer and say,
'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty
or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison,
and not minister to your needs?’
He will answer them, 'Amen, I say to you,
what you did not do for one of these least ones,
you did not do for me.’
And these will go off to eternal punishment,
but the righteous to eternal life."

St. Paul Saints Flag Football News:

Saints Varsity flag football team consisting of 7th & 8th graders cruised to the Sweet 16 in CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) Archdiocesan Championships this past weekend. On Saturday Nov. 12th in the first round the Saints played St. Bernards of Bellflower defeating them 27-8. On Sunday Nov. 13th the Saints defeated Our Lady of Miraculous Medal of Montebello to advance to the Sweet 16.

The Varsity flag football team will play this coming Saturday Nov. 19th vs. St. Anastasia of Westchester at 12:15p.m. at Serra High School, 14830 S. Van Ness Ave. Gardena, Ca. 90249. Serra H.S. is on the corner of Van Ness and Marine, Admission is $4.00 for Adults and $1.00 for Children, Faculty is admitted free with ID. If the Saints win on Saturday Nov. 19th they will play on Sunday Nov. 20th @ Serra H.S. at 1p.m. Check Coach Eddies voicemail for an update on Saturday 11/19 after 4p.m.

Congratulations to our "B" Team of 5th and 6th graders for winning the 23rd Annual "B" St. Paul the Apostle School, Veterans Day Tournament. The tournament featured 16 teams from 14 schools in what was the largest one day tournament hosted this year in CYO. The Saints battled to an undefeated record in Pool play defeating St. Augustine of Culver City, St. Anthony of El Segundo and Chaminade Middle School Blue Team of Chatsworth. Winning the Pool advanced them to the Semifinals against Corpus Christi of Pacific Palisades with the Saints winning a very close game. This setup is a rematch of last year’s championship of Holy Trinity of San Pedro vs St. Paul. St. Paul winning again against a very talented and well-coached group from Holy Trinity.

This tournament was a huge success due to all the families of our 5th and 6th grade players led by our team parent Doug Good who coordinated the snack bar, and deserves our appreciation. Many 7th and 8th grade students volunteered for the event and gave over 80 hours of service when added together, they made the tournament run very well, setting up fields, helping in the snack bar, recording results at each field and getting the referees drinks on four fields at two parks. Coach Nic Premoli who helped in so many ways, by lining fields, coaching and helping in any way he could. Thanks to Coach Eddie Rosenberg for coordinating the Tournament.
