Weekly Readings/Reflections

READINGS OF SUNDAY NOVEMBER 12

Reading 1
1 Kings 17:10-16

In those days, Elijah the prophet went to Zarephath.
As he arrived at the entrance of the city,
a widow was gathering sticks there; he called out to her,
"Please bring me a small cupful of water to drink."
She left to get it, and he called out after her,
"Please bring along a bit of bread."
She answered, "As the LORD, your God, lives,
I have nothing baked; there is only a handful of flour in my jar
and a little oil in my jug.
Just now I was collecting a couple of sticks,
to go in and prepare something for myself and my son;
when we have eaten it, we shall die."
Elijah said to her, "Do not be afraid.
Go and do as you propose.
But first make me a little cake and bring it to me.
Then you can prepare something for yourself and your son.
For the LORD, the God of Israel, says,
'The jar of flour shall not go empty,
nor the jug of oil run dry,
until the day when the LORD sends rain upon the earth.'"
She left and did as Elijah had said.
She was able to eat for a year, and he and her son as well;
the jar of flour did not go empty,
nor the jug of oil run dry,
as the LORD had foretold through Elijah.

Gospel
Mark 12:38-44

In the course of his teaching Jesus said to the crowds,
"Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long robes
and accept greetings in the marketplaces,
seats of honor in synagogues,
and places of honor at banquets.
They devour the houses of widows and, as a pretext
recite lengthy prayers.
They will receive a very severe condemnation."

He sat down opposite the treasury
and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury.
Many rich people put in large sums.
A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents.
Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them,
"Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more
than all the other contributors to the treasury.
For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth,
but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had,
her whole livelihood."

From School Nurse's Office

FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE:

As most of you have heard…Lice is once again at SPA! The rumors are flying and people are becoming edgy! And I am saying, Don’t ’shoot the messenger!”  I didn’t’ come to your home and give them to your children!

I do the courtesy of checking all grades or the grades in which I have heard the outbreak originated. It is the parents’ responsibility to do head checks on their children. This shouldn’t be done only when there is an alert about head lice.  It should be a part of their daily grooming routine.  There is no need for parents to become paranoid and begin to blame others.

Some parents are saying that it is spreading too fast so there must be something wrong over here.  There is something wrong!  Some parents, as usual are not informing me that their child has had lice.  They are treating then sending the children back to school without my giving them “a clean bill of health”.

The reason that there seems to be so many is because I am checking!  I can tell that some of the students have had them for a while by the number of nits or lice I fine on their heads! So who knows how long it has been going through the classes before I am informed!

St. Paul the Apostle School has a NO NIT policy! It means just that, no nits on any hair follicle. I understand that it is tedious job, but it must be done or we will have an epidemic within the school.  Yes, I know that you have spent hours upon hours of combing and picking! I empathize with you but must hold to the policy.  To this date the keeping of this policy has worked well.

If your child has been sent home due to lice or nits, you must check in with the Health Office before returning to school. Parents please also note that your child will tell others that they have had or have lice.  Your trying to keep it a secret doesn’t always work.

On a side note, please check you child’s grooming and hygiene. I was quite surprised at the lack of personal hygiene in the lower and upper grade children…especially the boys!

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Miss. Van V. Anderson, R.N.
