From the desk of Sister Stella

Industriousness: working dutifully, diligently, and lovingly.
Encouraging others to do the same.

From the desk of Sister Stella:

PATTI, MARY KAY, JILL, SUSAN, AND KELLY you certainly have been very industrious for many, many months. We offer you our thanks and congratulations and the very best of luck for a GREAT FESTIVAL WEEKEND. You have the support and prayers of all our children, faculty and staff.
When I think of each of you and all that you have accomplished the following thoughts come t o mind:

ONE SEED CAN START A GARDEN,
ONE SMILE CAN LIFT A SPIRIT.
ONE CANDLE CAN LIGHT A ROOM.
ONE CONVERSATION CAN START A FRIENDSHIP.
ONE STEP CAN BEGIN A JOURNEY.
                            ONE HEART CAN LOVE MANY.

BAKE SALE INFORMATION

Monthly bake sales will be returning this year! All school-affiliated organizations are eligible. If you are interested in raising money for your group by holding a bake sale on campus, please contact Debbie Buderwitz.

There will be five or six scheduled sales throughout the school year. No sales will be held during advent or lent so keep that in mind during your planning. Happy snacking!

Lost and Found

The lost and found (otherwise known as the 'shack')is located in the south east corner of the pavilion.

Remember to clearly label all items (uniforms, lunch boxes, books, etc). No initials or first names (only).

Please use last names (first names must be accompanied by last names).

Due to the high volume of items, unclaimed items (though they are labeled) are removed after one month in the shack. I can no longer hold them in the shack all year.

Uniforms [unclaimed, no labels or illegible labels]are laundered, put in storage and resold at the uniform exchange the last day of school.
All non-uniform items (lunchboxes, supplies, shoes, toys, misc., etc.) and uniforms that will not sell (highly worn) are removed, cleaned and donated to charity.

The recipients of our donations are:
1. St. Sebastians's (our sister school)
2. An impoverished church and community south of Tijuana, Mexico
3. St. Joseph's Center
4. The Clare Foundation

Please note: I always welcome comments/suggestions of ways to improve this service.

Weekly Readings/Reflections

Next Sunday, October 12, is the Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time.
Please read and reflect on these readings during the week (alone or with family and friends), and come to next Sunday’s liturgy prepared to listen attentively to the proclamation of the Word of God.

READING I Wisdom 7:7-11

I prayed, and prudence was given me; I pleaded, and the spirit of wisdom came to me.
I preferred her to scepter and throne, and deemed riches nothing in comparison with her,
nor did I liken any priceless gem to her;
because all gold, in view of her, is a little sand, and before her, silver is to be accounted mire.
Beyond health and comeliness I loved her,
and I chose to have her rather than the light, because the splendor of her never yields to sleep.
Yet all good things together came to me in her company, and countless riches at her hands.

READING II Hebrews 4:12-13

Brothers and sisters:
Indeed the word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword,
penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow,
and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart.
No creature is concealed from him,
but everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must render an account.

GOSPEL Mark 10:17-30

As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before him, and asked him,
"Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
Jesus answered him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone.
You know the commandments: You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal;
you shall not bear false witness; you shall not defraud; honor your father and your mother."
He replied and said to him, "Teacher, all of these I have observed from my youth."
Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, "You are lacking in one thing.
Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me."
At that statement his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.
Jesus looked around and said to his disciples,
"How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!"
The disciples were amazed at his words.
So Jesus again said to them in reply, "Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!
It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle
than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God."
They were exceedingly astonished and said among themselves, "Then who can be saved?"
Jesus looked at them and said,
"For human beings it is impossible, but not for God. All things are possible for God."
Peter began to say to him, "We have given up everything and followed you."
Jesus said, "Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters
or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the gospel
who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age:
houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands,
with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come."

Twenty-Eighth Sunday (October 12)

READINGS
Wisdom is more important than wealth and even health;
God’s word reveals everything about us; worldly wealth can draw us away from where our true treasure is.

WHAT I HEAR
What do I hear about what I value more than my relationship with God?

MY FAITH JOURNEY
What are the riches in my life - how grateful am I for them?

FOR CHILDREN
Jesus wants us to know that he doesn’t want anything to stop us from loving God. Sometimes people hold on to things that get in the way of following Jesus. What might those things be?

ART LITERACY

Ladies and Gentlemen:

On Saturday you will have an opportunity to bid on a banner year of grade art auction projects! A description of all the grade projects came on hot pink paper in the Aloha Festival packet last week. As an aid to providing motivation to come and bid on the art on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2003 at 4:45 p.m. PST, look at the spectacular Third grade screen of Mola art! Wow, a powerful and functional piece! Additionally, take a good look at a close-up of a section of the Fifth grade framed mirror. All the grade projects are thoughtful and inspiring. The imagines are outside Sister Stella's office. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday!

Thank you. Ame Pitt,
Special Projects Coordinator for the Art Literacy Program at Saint Paul the Apostle School.

Chess Club News

Remember, October 13th is a late day and there is no kindergarten chess on late days.

Did you receive a USCF renewal in the mail? Every year, as part of your membership in the St. Paul Chess Club, your child is automatically registered or renewed as a member of the US Chess Federation (USCF). You will receive a USCF membership card in the mail. Once registered with the USCF, however, they often times will send you a renewal notice directly. Please ignore the renewal notice from the USCF. We will renew your USCF membership for you. If you have any questions on this matter, please contact us.

The Chess Club is hosting the Fourteenth Annual Fall Classic Chess Tournament. It will be held in the JCPC on Saturday, October 25, 2003. Tournament information and registration forms are now available. Many parent volunteers are needed to make the tournaments fun and safe. Please be generous with your time. Chess parents may be contacted soon to fill a shift on the 25th so we thank you in advance for your cooperation. Should your child play in the tournament? If you are not sure, please speak with Richard Rico, Tournament Director. There is a Novice section (K – 3) as well as JV and Championship sections, so please consider participating. Often, Saturday sports (such as soccer games) can be accommodated with a "bye". Again, see Richard for details.

Order t-shirts, find forms and information on the Chess Club website http://home.earthlink.net/~spachess/ (we have a link on the school website "Links" page). Direct questions to Richard Rico or Mark Raineri by sending a note to "Chess" via the black bag or by emailing spachess@earthlink.net
