"Flexible people never get bent out of shape."(Bits &Pieces)

Desk of Sister Stella Maria, Principal

Parents, please remember to ask each of your children for your appointment letter for your parent teacher conference. All students from Kindergarten through eight grade have been given the letters on Thursday October 28. The conferences are on November fourth and fifth. Please be prompt. Coaches program of supervision will be available all day if needed. After school care will take place as usual. Enjoy your time with the most dedicated teachers.

We wish all of our families a fun filled Halloween. We do very little with Halloween during school hours--, as all of you know we just finished a most wonderful Fall Festival. Monday is a late date for the students---school bell will ring at 10:20.

Don't forget to change your clocks this weekend, FALL BACK

Our sixth grade liturgy and potluck dinner was a delightful experience for all our sixth grade families. Thank you to all who helped.

All parents are welcome to come to celebrate our school Liturgy on Friday Oct. 29th at 8:15 am. Our Seventh grade students are the leaders this month.
Our value for this week reflects on BEING CREATIVE MEANS: ????
Value for 11/1 is PATRIOTIC. (See students' handbook.)

From Fr. Paul

Proud to be at St Paul the Apostle

We remember from childhood, that pride comes before the fall. This is very true, but it is the kind of pride that blinds one to the truth, that blinds one to his or her own reality. It is sometimes called blind pride and can lead a person to a sad ending. We know that from experience in our own lives.

Then there is what we would call genuine pride. As LBJ was wont to say, "I’m proud as punch!" There are a number of things we can be proud about. In fact this pride borders on thanksgiving, but it is a word that is sometimes lost from our vocabulary since so many world, national and local events have made genuine pride difficult.

So we segue close to home to our parish, St. Paul the Apostle, church and school. Some wonderful things have happened over the past few weeks that has caused a great deal of pride, accomplishment and achievement.

Most recently we celebrated our fall festival, "Festival de los ninos." Of course we are proud of the success, the numbers of hot dogs and hamburgers sold, the games, the rides, the people attending. Most importantly for me the pride was in the level of accomplishment of so many. When we count the time and energy and the generosity how can we not be thrilled and proud of this wonderful event. We thank all of those who contributed so much for this wonderful festival. It is a great event and a sign that St. Paul the Apostle, school and church is ready to throw itself into a project that brings so many people together.

By now most of you have heard of the new purchases of property across the street. I remember sitting at a staff meeting last May when Fr Tom and Sister Stella asked if we could give of our resources $100,000 to put a claim on this purchase. We all had a collective gulp and beads of sweat came on our foreheads. $100,000, just to get in the game! So we looked at each other, smiled and with excitement said, "Go for it!"

Well we are now proud owners of three properties across the street. The project still needs attention and money, but the purchase was made and St. Paul the Apostle, parish and school are now land owners with great potential for expanding our horizons here. Again it is not just the ownership, but the vision, generosity and commitment of so many. I’m proud to be a parishioner at St. Paul the Apostle. I hope you are as well.

PWC President:

Dear SPA Families:

Festival Wrap Up:
On behalf of the PWC, I would like to thank EVERYONE who participated in the Festival De Los Ninos. We are fortunate to have the tremendous support of our entire St. Paul’s community. The success of the Festival is measured in many ways. We know that in all ways Festival De Los Ninos has left us with wonderful memories. We wish we could measure all the good will and community in evidence that weekend.

Since it is our primary fundraiser, the financial outcome is what everyone has been waiting to hear. Our wonderful treasurer, Mark Raineri, has spent the better part of the past two weeks processing income and expenses. Although not everything has been received yet, this year’s Festival should net an extraordinary sum in excess of $360,000!!!

We are so grateful for all the hard work that went into this year’s Festival. Special thanks to our five Festival Chairs – Julie Chait, Beth Rawjee, Judy Villablanca, Mona Horton, and Theresa McDugald. Thank you for your spirit of giving.

Have a safe and Happy Halloween! Remember that Monday, November 1st is a late day.

Catholic," is currently a Senior Writer/Columnist at the Times. For 33
years, he has been, variously, Editor of the Opinion Section, Chief
Editorial Writer, Legal Affairs Analyst, Deputy National Editor and

Weekly Readings/Reflections

October 31, 2004
Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reading I
Wis 11:22-12:2

Before the LORD the whole universe is as a grain from a balance
or a drop of morning dew come down upon the earth.
But you have mercy on all, because you can do all things;
and you overlook people's sins that they may repent.
For you love all things that are
and loathe nothing that you have made;
for what you hated, you would not have fashioned.
And how could a thing remain, unless you willed it;
or be preserved, had it not been called forth by you?
But you spare all things, because they are yours,
O LORD and lover of souls,
for your imperishable spirit is in all things!
Therefore you rebuke offenders little by little,
warn them and remind them of the sins they are committing,
that they may abandon their wickedness and believe in you, O LORD!

Reading II
2 Thess 1:11-2:2

Brothers and sisters:
We always pray for you,
that our God may make you worthy of his calling
and powerfully bring to fulfillment every good purpose
and every effort of faith,
that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you,
and you in him,
in accord with the grace of our God and Lord Jesus Christ.
We ask you, brothers and sisters,
with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ
and our assembling with him,
not to be shaken out of your minds suddenly, or to be alarmed
either by a "spirit," or by an oral statement,
or by a letter allegedly from us
to the effect that the day of the Lord is at hand.

Gospel
Lk 19:1-10

At that time, Jesus came to Jericho and intended to pass through the town.
Now a man there named Zacchaeus,
who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man,
was seeking to see who Jesus was;
but he could not see him because of the crowd,
for he was short in stature.
So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus,
who was about to pass that way.
When he reached the place, Jesus looked up and said,
"Zacchaeus, come down quickly,
for today I must stay at your house."
And he came down quickly and received him with joy.
When they all saw this, they began to grumble, saying,
"He has gone to stay at the house of a sinner."
But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord,
"Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor,
and if I have extorted anything from anyone
I shall repay it four times over."
And Jesus said to him,
"Today salvation has come to this house
because this man too is a descendant of Abraham.
For the Son of Man has come to seek
and to save what was lost."

October is Fire Safety Month
Does your family know what to do in case of a fire
?

Did you know that…

Roughly 70 percent of home fire deaths result from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. *
Once the alarm sounds, you may have as few as two minutes to escape. *
Only 25% of families have actually developed and practiced a home fire escape plan.*

What Your Family Can Do

Make your home fire safe

Install smoke alarms in or near each sleeping area and on each level of your home
Test all smoke alarms once a month
Replace batteries when the alarms "chirp" or at least once a year
Purchase a fire extinguisher and learn how to use one

Make a plan and practice

Plan at least two ways to escape from every room of your home
Select a meeting point outside your home where everyone would meet after escaping
Practice the plan at least twice a year

We will once again charter a luxury bus for our group, or you may drive up yourself. We leave immediately AFTER school on Friday, March 4, and return to Los Angeles on Monday evening, March 7 (an SPA school day off). School attendance is required for Friday, March 4, and no dismissals or absence excuses will be allowed for early departures to Mammoth.

Please note that this is a family event – parents are fully responsible for their children during the entire weekend. No children can be sent on the trip without parental or other specifically arranged adult care and supervision.

In order to obtain an information package and sign-up instructions please attend an information meeting 4pm Saturday, November 13, 2004, in the Multi-Purpose Room. Procedures for obtaining rooms at Juniper Springs / Sunstone Lodge will be different than in prior years.
