From the desk of Sister Stella

“I slept and dreamt that life was joy; I woke up and saw that life was service; I acted and behold service was joy.” (Tagore)

From the Desk of Sister Stella Maria, Principal:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY FATHER TOM (on Friday, October 27th)! You are in our daily prayers for continued healing. We love you and we miss you more than we can express.

Don’t forget to change your clocks this weekend: “Fall back” one hour.

We offer our sincere thanks to all parents who made the effort to participate in the three-hour workshop: Protect Our Children. We had over 200 participants! Please make a copy of your certificate of completion and return it to the office via black bag. We will make an alphabetical list and distribute it to all faculty as well as the leaders of our after school programs.

St. Martin of Tours is in the process of organizing a Virtus Workshop. When I am notified of the date and time, I will send out the information for those who need to become certified.

On next Tuesday, Halloween, the children will not be given homework. That Wednesday, November 1st is a Catholic holy day known as the Feast of All Saints. It is a late day, which means that school begins at 10:20 a.m. The student body will have Mass at 1:30 p.m. and all parents are invited to attend.

During Parent/Teacher Conferences, each parent (of the oldest or only child) will receive a packet from the homeroom teacher. The packet contains a letter and a booklet. Please pay serious attention to the instructions as it pertains to our religion program.

St. Paul’s Says Goodbye to the LeMay Family

Last year St. Paul’s made a commitment to support a family that had been displaced
by Hurricane Katrina. With the help of Catholic Charities, we welcomed Adam and Juriena LeMay and their two children Pharaoh and Peyton to the two-bedroom apartment that the parish owns across the street on Selby Avenue.

The year flew by and last week the family returned to Mississippi with a truckload of usehold goods, new job skills for Juriena, and new resolve to help their extended families who are still struggling to recover from the disaster. Adam has his old job back. Juriena, who is half way through the testing for her cosmetology license, has found a storefront where she hopes to open her own business.

They called to let us know that they had arrived safe and sound. The family said their goodbyes at the Sunday 9: oo a.m. liturgy two weeks ago. They are very grateful for the advantages this year has given them. May God bless them always.

Veterans Day Remembrance

This Veterans Day as the country remembers all of the service men and women who have died in the line of duty, we at St. Paul’s would like especially to remember those who have been friends and relatives of our community.

We would also like to hold in prayer those men and women that we know that are currently in harms way.You are invited to call into the parish office, or sign the Veterans ook that is located with our prayer intention book in the gathering space at the back of the church. Please let us know if your service person is deceased or currently in harms way. We will print the list of names in the bulletin Veterans Day Weekend.

Weekly Readings/Reflections

Readings For Sunday October 29

Reading 1
Jer 31:7-9

Thus says the LORD:
Shout with joy for Jacob,
exult at the head of the nations;
proclaim your praise and say:
The LORD has delivered his people,
the remnant of Israel.
Behold, I will bring them back
from the land of the north;
I will gather them from the ends of the world,
with the blind and the lame in their midst,
the mothers and those with child;
they shall return as an immense throng.
They departed in tears,
but I will console them and guide them;
I will lead them to brooks of water,
on a level road, so that none shall stumble.
For I am a father to Israel,
Ephraim is my first-born.

Gospel
Mk 10:46-52

As Jesus was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a sizable crowd,
Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus,
sat by the roadside begging.
On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth,
he began to cry out and say,
"Jesus, son of David, have pity on me."
And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent.
But he kept calling out all the more,
"Son of David, have pity on me."
Jesus stopped and said, "Call him."
So they called the blind man, saying to him,
"Take courage; get up, Jesus is calling you."
He threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus.
Jesus said to him in reply, "What do you want me to do for you?"
The blind man replied to him, "Master, I want to see."
Jesus told him, "Go your way; your faith has saved you."
Immediately he received his sight
and followed him on the way.

St. Paul’s Students Win In 5 out of 9 Categories at Scholastic Fall Classic!

16 schools were represented at the 16th Annual Scholastic Fall Classic this past Saturday morning in the John Carroll Parish Center.  There were 50 students participating in St. Paul’s annual event, including players from John Thomas Dye, Westwood Charter and Sinai Akiba Hebrew Academy.  25 participants who played in the Novice Group and in the Junior Varsity Group represented St. Paul’s.  In addition, St. Paul’s hosted a Championship Level Group that attracted high school students.

The winners in ALL of the five Novice Groups were St. Paul’s students: Jackson Ferris, Sophie Kupiec-Weglinski, Blake Fragosa, Gary Hale Thornhill-Wilson and Nicholas Russell.  Congratulations to all of our St. Paul’s players who showed terrific sportsmanship: kindness and respect for the other players were clearly the Most Valuable Players of the day.  It was great meeting students and parents from schools including Horace Mann, Hawthorne Elementary, Hamilton High School and Beverly Hills High School, among others.

The winners in the JV Group were Brendan Gallagher (John Thomas Dye) and Allen Goldfarb (John Burroughs School).  The big winner in the Championship Group was Ryan Vetter from Esperanza High School, Yorba Linda.

Tournament Director Ivona Jezierska was pleased with the Tournament’s results, saying, “St. Paul’s has a rich chess tradition and the students won in all Novice sections.  Jack Peters and I will soon be selecting six players to participate in a new St. Paul’s Chess Team.  We will include players from all three levels from the Chess Club.”  The first opponent for St. Paul’s will be John Thomas Dye.  A date will soon be determined.  Stay tuned to www.spachess.org for details.
