Daylight Saving time Ends on Sunday Oct. 27, 2002 @ 12amTurn your Clocks Back 1 Hour

" As parents, everything we do or say, as well as all the things we forget
to do or are unable to say, will leave deep impressions on our children
It is our responsibility to remember that, so that the impact we have
will add to our children's strength and not to their wounds."
(Will Glennon)

From the Desk of SSM

This past weekend, I read again every detail in the 2002 Silent Auction Guide--Festival Sponsor and Appreciation Souvenir. From the inspiring dedication written by Father Tom to the Quick Find Index and all of the pages in between my spilled over with gratitude as I read each name in each category. You are a most generous, thoughtful, well-organized, hard-working and caring community. May God Bless each one of you and each member of your family for the love and devotion you show your children through your support of the festival.

Parents, a week ago you should have received from each of your children your appointment time for parent teacher conferences. Please be prompt, each conference is twenty minutes and we have been very sensitive to parents with multiple children so that all your conferences are arranged within the same hour.

Just a reminder for new parents and for some parents who are not so new. Please read Page 70 of your HandBook regarding Homework Policy for Absentees. Any teacher will be more than delighted to talk with you by appointment if you send a note or leave a message on the voice mail. Under no circumstances just drop in on a teacher and expect her to be available and give you full attention-teachers are professionals just like your Doctor, Dentist, Attorney.
During dismissal time at the end of the day the teachers have been instructed to supervise the students until the very last child leaves---conversations with parents should not go on at this time. Please help.

See attached to our hard copy of Epistle today our monthly magazine entitled EVERY DAY CATHOLIC. Try to find time to read it, as it will provide some excellent topics for conversation with your children.

Weekly Readings/Reflections

These are the readings for next Sunday, October 27, the Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time.
Please read and reflect on these readings during the week (alone or with family and friends), and come to next Sunday’s liturgy prepared to listen attentively to the proclamation of the Word of God.

READING I Exodus 22:20-26

Thus says the Lord:
"You shall not molest or oppress an alien, for you were once aliens yourselves in the land of Egypt.
You shall not wrong any widow or orphan.
If ever you wrong them and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry.
My wrath will flare up, and I will kill you with the sword;
then your own wives will be widows, and yo ur children orphans.
"If you lend money to one of your poor neighbors among my people,
you shall not act like an extortioner toward him by demanding interest from him.
If you take your neighbor's cloak as a pledge, you shall return it to him before sunset;
for this cloak of his is the only covering he has for his body.
What else has he to sleep in?
If he cries out to me, I will hear him; for I am compassionate."

men

READING II 1 Thessalonians 1:5c-10

Brothers and sisters:
You know what sort of people we were among you for your sake.
And you became imitators of us and of the Lord,
receiving the word in great affliction, with joy from the Holy Spirit,
so that you became a model for all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia.
For from you the word of the Lord has sounded forth not only in Macedonia and in Achaia, but in every place your faith in God has gone forth, so that we have no need to say anything. For they themselves openly declare about us what sort of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God and to await his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus, who delivers us from the coming wrath.

GOSPEL Matthew 22:34-40

When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees,
they gathered together, and one of them, a scholar of the law, tested him by asking,
"Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?"
He said to him,
"You shall love the Lord, your God,
with all your heart,
with all your soul,
and with all your mind.
This is the greatest and the first commandment.
The second is like it:
You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments."

R E F L E C T I O N

Sometimes loving one’s neighbor as one’s self is not such a good deal for the neighbor. How do we begin to love ourselves as God loves us? How do we expand that love to our neighbor?
The reading from Exodus is a blueprint for social justice. How do Christians today respond to this challenge?

Students School Activities

7th Grade Girls Volleyball - White Team

The White Team played their seventh match at Harvard-Westlake on Monday, October 14th. The team suffered their first loss of the season in a very close 12-15, 13-15 match. Serving seemed to be the team’s only weakness in an otherwise very good performance

The team’s eighth and ninth matches, played against St. Marks and Marlborough, also proved to be tough. The team lost these two matches but provided good competition for their opponents. Their record now stands at 6-3.

On Friday, October 25th, the team will have practice until 4:45pm. Their final game of the season will be played at home against Brentwood School on October 28th at 3:45pm. The McDonald, Newman and Page families will provide refreshments.

7th grade girls volleyball-Green Team

Though not a win, the girls were victorious in their growth and skill development. Marlborough won a hard fought game. Scores 15/8 and 15/3.

St. Paul Saints Flag Football News:
Saints win Crespi H.S. Tournament

On Monday 10/21 the Saints defeated St. Catherine of Siena 28-20 to win the Crespi Tournament. To get to the finals, the team first had to win their pool which they did with wins over St. Joseph the Worker and Our Lady of Lourdes. They advanced to the Semifinals to face a very big and talented Chaminade Middle School team. The game was a classic back and forth battle, the Saints trailed by 2 with 2 minutes and rallied with a touchdown with 30 seconds left. Chris in 8th grade was sensational especially defensively. In the final game the team played without Chris who was ill. The team didn’t let down and played another solid opponent in St. Catherine. The game was close until the 4th quarter, the Saints played as a team and wore them down offensively and defensively. Conor and Holden in 8th grade were named to the all-tournament team with Holden also earning the MVP Award.

The Saints improved to 17-1 overall and 6-0 in league. Come see the Saints play against Holy Trinity on Weds. Oct. 30th @ Daniels Field with the "B" Team playing before them vs Holy Trinity "B" team, times to announced. Holy Trinity defeated the Saints for their only loss this year 22-12 at the Notre Dame Tournament in the Championship G

Fall Festival

MESSAGE FROM THE 2002 FESTIVAL CHAIR

"Thank you" seems trite after the incredible Festival weekend that we all experienced, but I do want to thank each and every one of you for your help, your support and for every minute that you spent to make Celebrate America such a success!

To Leslie, Daryl and Wilma - I offer my undying gratitude. There were definitely a few moments that I really wished I had been at the Angels game, but all three of you saved my sanity and went above and beyond the call of duty in every instance. I could never have done this without you.

To Sister Stella, Father Tom, teachers, office staff, school personnel, parish staff and especially Concepcion - Where would any of us be without you? I am amazed and encouraged by your ability to survive the chaos of the beginning of school AND keep smiling in the face of a disruptive festival every year.

To PWC Board Members, Room Parents, Festival Booth Chairs and Committee Chairs and especially John Griffin - Unbelievable, incomparable and unthinkable!

To Parents and Non-Parent Volunteers - It's been said before, but we simply cannot do this without you. Your exhaustion does not go unnoticed by anyone, even your children!

Finally, to all the Students of St. Paul the Apostle - Thank you for the chance to be a part of Celebrate America. You are an extraordinary group of children and you give us all hope that the future of our country is in good hands.

May God bless each and every one of you.
Debbie Buderwitz

ATTENTION $$$ ATTENTION $$$ ATTENTION

To: All "Celebrate America" Taxpayers
From: The IRS (Immediate Reimbursement Service)

For those of you who need to be reimbursed for Festival-related expenses, the time has come to collect those receipts and submit them for reimbursement.

A supply of PWC Festival reimbursement forms can be found in the Treasurer’s envelope in the school office. Please complete the form and attach your receipts to it. The form and receipts can be sent to me (Carol Page, Festival Treasurer) via the Black Bag, dropped off in the school office, or mailed to my home.

If you are not seeking reimbursement and are planning to absorb the cost of your Festival-related expenses, you can complete a donation report (found in the Treasurer’s envelope in the school office). Attach copies of your receipts and send the form and receipt copies to me. I will sign the form and return it to you to be kept for your tax records.

Lastly, if you have dealt with vendors who have not yet submitted invoices, any help you can give us in getting those invoices sent in would be greatly appreciated.

It would be a big help to us if you could process your reimbursement requests as quickly as possible so that we can finalize our Festival accounting. Thanks for all your help! If you have any questions, please feel free to call me.

Carol Page, Festival Treasurer

Chess Club News

It’s great to see so many students learning and enjoying chess this year. Our Monday after-school classes began last month and are well underway with great turnouts. Congratulations to those students who advanced to higher levels this year. The kindergarten chess classes which meet Monday mornings (KPM @ 10:30 and KAM @ 11:00) have already learned the basic rules; the kids played their first game this week. If you are interested in your child joining the chess program (at any grade and level) you may still do so. Pick up a registration form outside the school office. Remember, chess classes are offered Friday evenings as well. Contact Richard Rico, program director, if you have questions.
If you have ordered a chess club t-shirt and have not yet received it, please contact Mark Raineri
SPA hosts the 13th Annual Fall Classic chess tournament this Saturday, October 26th in the JCPC @ 9:30 AM. See sign-up forms outside the school office for details.
