"Even if you are on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there." Will Rogers.

From the desk of Sister Stella Maria, Principal

The Daughters of Mary and Joseph had a wonderful liturgy and party to celebrate the 50th. anniversary of Sister Mary Enda and her class mates on Sunday October 17th. at St. John Fischer Church in Palos Verdes. We also offer our congratulations to Sister Mary Enda who has spent twenty of her fifty years serving here at St. Paul the Apostle School. In the not too distant future we will celebrate Sister at one of our Sunday Liturgies.

Parent Teacher Conferences will take place on November 4th and 5th. You appointment time will be sent home with each child on Thursday October 28th. Please ask your child for the appointment letter.

St. Paul's School is participating in Westside Thanksgiving Drive. We have chosen to collect toiletries. Please drop them off on the marked table in the patio outside the office. You may begin delivering them the week of Nov. 1st. See additional information below.

Since school started we have some students tardy each morning. Most of the excuses are: traffic or we did not set the alarm Clocks will change soon so that should make life a little easier. As for traffic---traffic is a permanent condition in Los Angeles morning, noon and night. Please give yourself an extra ten minutes and remove some of the stress from the young life of your child.

Westside Thanksgiving Day Celebration & Dinner
Est. 198
2

Consisting of Westside churches, schools, and organizations reaching out to those in need

On Thanksgiving Day, we look forward to hosting about 3,000 guests for Thanksgiving Day dinner at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Our guests come from all walks of life, from homeless individuals and working poor families to college students unable to get home for the holiday. In addition to a complete traditional Thanksgiving meal, we provide our guests with access to free blankets, haircuts, medical consultations, clothing, and hygiene items.

This inter-faith group made up of individuals from various churches, school, organizations, and corporations needs your help. Please have your students bring in bars of soaps/ combs/toothbrushes/toothpastes/deodorants/ shampoos/ pairs of white tube socks (one size fits all)/ wash cloths. We would welcome any new or gently used clean blankets. And if you have any plastic or paper grocery bags that you are looking to get rid of, send them in too (we will put the hygiene items in them for distribution on Thanksgiving). A large bag will be in each classroom in which to place items. Items will be picked up on Monday, Nov. 22,2004. . If you/your family would like to volunteer to help on Thanksgiving Eve to prepare or Thanksgiving Day to help please contact the information hotline (310) 394-3153. Contact Daryl Crowley with any questions (310) 397-4846.

Thank you so much for your help.

Elementary School October 2004
Discipline

Make comments about behavior, not your child

Out of anger or frustration, parents often resort to criticizing children.
"You’re such a baby!" "Can’t you learn anything?" "What’s wrong with you?"
Such words don’t help a child correct inappropriate behavior. Instead, they destroy a child’s confidence and motivation. Ultimately, they evoke resent-ment, rebellion or resignation. They make a child feel he can’t do anything right, so why try?
Such statements focus on the child. To change behavior, you must focus on the behavior you want to change.
For example, don’t say, "You’re lazy." Say, "I’d like you to make homework a priority." Don’t say, "What a slob!" Say, "Please pick up your things."
Avoid giving a "you" message. "You are…. Instead, give an ‘it" message. "I’m upset about…"
The best way to get the behavior you want is to praise positive behavior when you see it.

Be sure to:
Say how you feel. "I love the way you ""I appreciate
Describe what you see. "I can see you put a lot of effort into your school project."
Praise progress. "You spelled every word correctly on your test this week."
Make comments that encour-age your child to conclude something positive about him-self.. "I appreciate your being so kind to your sister." Your child concludes—I am capa-ble of being kind."

PWC President

Dear SPA Families,

Please attend the Festival Thank You Mass on Sunday, October 24th at 9:00AM. This is our chance to honor and thank everyone who helped make this year’s Festival such a tremendous success. Note that this is a date change from the school calendar – the mass will be this weekend – not the 31st.

Many thanks to Kelley Workman and her committee for their contributions to our Hot Lunch program. They even had to handle rainy weather during their first week of serving lunches to our children. We hope that everyone enjoys this valuable service!

Don’t forget to send money with your children this Friday for the Football Bake Sale – I’m sure there will be terrific treats for everyone as well as some healthier options for those who wish them!

Sixth Grade Liturgy and Potluck
Don’t forget the Sixth Grade Liturgy and Potluck next week, Wednesday, October 27th. Food is to be dropped off in the JCPC at 6:15pm. The Liturgy will begin at 6:30pm at the altar in front of Our Lady in the Church. At 7:15pm, you will return to the JCPC for dinner. This is our first potluck of the year!

Debbie Buderwitz – PWC President.

Parish News

A CANDID LOOK AT RELIGION AND POLITICS IN THE 2004 ELECTION

By Joan Doyle, Parish Director of Religious Education

St. Paul the Apostle Parish adult education program, "FaithAlive!"
is pleased to present a very special evening event taking place this
month. On Thursday, October 28, from 7:30 to 9:00 PM, in the JCPC Upper Social Hall, Los Angeles Times "Regarding Media" columnist, Tim Rutten, will offer a candid exploration of the special challenges currently facing the American electorate. His initial presentation, entitled
"Religion and Politics in the 2004 Election," will be followed by what
promises to be a spirited Q&A session.

Mr. Rutten, who describes himself as "just your ordinary inquiring
Catholic," is currently a Senior Writer/Columnist at the Times. For 33
years, he has been, variously, Editor of the Opinion Section, Chief
Editorial Writer, Legal Affairs Analyst, Deputy National Editor and
City/County Bureau Chief.

The fee of $5.00 per person for this presentation is payable at the
door. No pre-registration is required. Light refreshments will be
served. For more information, contact Joan Doyle, Director of Religious
Education, in the Parish Office (310-474-1527, ext. 241).

A few reminders parents:
1. You cannot take a left in the morning when you exit the driveway. There is a sign that says as much. Please do not turn left as you exit the driveway between the rectory and the church in the morning. It really slows down traffic both behind you and on Ohio.

2. If you drop off on Selby please follow the directions of the Selby Driveway Director. You cannot elect to pull up the driveway if you are directed to pull over at the curb and offload students in that way. This created a very awkward and potentially dangerous and unsafe situation. Several parents have been balking when directed to pull over at the curb and are causing a real problem.

3. Cell phones – Last Thursday nearly every parent who entered the driveway in the afternoon was on their cell phone and had to be asked to turn them off. This is very unsafe. Please turn off your phones as you approach campus!

Do not use cell phones when you are fulfilling your traffic duty in the morning or in the afternoon. Several parents have been unable to properly open car doors and help students get out of cars because they are holding their phones and talking on them. In addition, this sets a bad example for students.

Weekly Readings/Reflections

October 24, 2004
Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reading I
Sir 35:12-14, 16-18

The LORD is a God of justice,
who knows no favorites.
Though not unduly partial toward the weak,
yet he hears the cry of the oppressed.
The Lord is not deaf to the wail of the orphan,
nor to the widow when she pours out her complaint.
The one who serves God willingly is heard;
his petition reaches the heavens.
The prayer of the lowly pierces the clouds;
it does not rest till it reaches its goal,
nor will it withdraw till the Most High responds,
judges justly and affirms the right,
and the Lord will not delay

.Reading II
2 Tm 4:6-8, 16-18

Beloved:
I am already being poured out like a libation,
and the time of my departure is at hand.
I have competed well; I have finished the race;
I have kept the faith.
From now on the crown of righteousness awaits me,
which the Lord, the just judge,
will award to me on that day, and not only to me,
but to all who have longed for his appearance.
At my first defense no one appeared on my behalf,
but everyone deserted me.
May it not be held against them!
But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength,
so that through me the proclamation might be completed
and all the Gentiles might hear it.
And I was rescued from the lion's mouth.
The Lord will rescue me from every evil threat
and will bring me safe to his heavenly kingdom.
To him be glory forever and ever. Amen.

Gospel
Lk 18:9-14

Jesus addressed this parable
to those who were convinced of their own righteousness
and despised everyone else.
"Two people went up to the temple area to pray;
one was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector.
The Pharisee took up his position and spoke this prayer to himself,
'O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity--
greedy, dishonest, adulterous--or even like this tax collector.
I fast twice a week, and I pay tithes on my whole income.'
But the tax collector stood off at a distance
and would not even raise his eyes to heaven
but beat his breast and prayed,
'O God, be merciful to me a sinner.'
I tell you, the latter went home justified, not the former;
for whoever exalts himself will be humbled,
and the one who humbles himself will be exalted."
