Weekly
Readings/Reflections
Next Sunday, October 5, is the Twenty-Seventh
Sunday in Ordinary Time.
Please read and reflect on these readings during the week
(alone or with family and friends), and come to next Sundays
liturgy prepared to listen attentively to the proclamation
of the Word of God.

READING I Genesis 2:18-24
The LORD God said: "It is not good for the man to
be alone.
I will make a suitable partner for him."
So the LORD God formed out of the ground various wild
animals and various birds of the air,
and he brought them to the man to see what he would call
them;
whatever the man called each of them would be its name.
The man gave names to all the cattle, all the birds of
the air, and all wild animals;
but none proved to be the suitable partner for the man.
So the LORD God cast a deep sleep on the man, and while
he was asleep,
he took out one of his ribs and closed up its place with
flesh.
The LORD God then built up into a woman the rib that he
had taken from the man.
When he brought her to the man, the man said:
"This one, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh
of my flesh;
this one shall be called 'woman,' for out of 'her man'
this one has been taken."
That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings
to his wife,
and the two of them become one flesh
READING II Hebrews 2:9-11
Brothers and sisters:
He "for a little while" was made "lower
than the angels,"
that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
For it was fitting that he, for whom and through whom
all things exist, in bringing many children to glory,
should make the leader to their salvation perfect through
suffering.
He who consecrates and those who are being consecrated
all have one origin.
Therefore, he is not ashamed to call them "brothers."

GOSPEL Mark 10:2-16
The Pharisees approached Jesus and asked, "Is it
lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?"
They were testing him.
He said to them in reply, "What did Moses command
you?"
They replied, "Moses permitted a husband to write
a bill of divorce and dismiss her."
But Jesus told them,
"Because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote
you this commandment.
But from the beginning of creation, God made them male
and female.
For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother
and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one
flesh.
So they are no longer two but one flesh.
Therefore what God has joined together, no human being
must separate."
In the house the disciples again questioned Jesus about
this.
He said to them,
"Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits
adultery against her;
and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she
commits adultery."
And people were bringing children to him that he might
touch them, but the disciples rebuked them.
When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them,
"Let the children come to me; do not prevent them,
for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom
of God like a child will not enter it."
Then he embraced them and blessed them, placing his hands
on them.
Twenty-Seventh Sunday (October 5)
READINGS Man and woman become one flesh; the Savior
was made perfect through suffering; Jesus shares his vision
of marriage and blesses children.
WHAT I HEAR What do I hear about marriage being sacred?
MY FAITH JOURNEY How do I recognize and respect
God in my relationships?
FOR CHILDREN Jesus tells us again how much he loves
us and wants to be our friend. When we talk with him,
he listens and is with us to help us. What do you want
to tell him today?

Did You Receive a USCF renewal in the mail? Every year,
as part of your membership in the St. Paul Chess Club,
your child is automatically registered or renewed as
a member of the US Chess Federation (USCF). You will
receive a USCF membership card in the mail. Once registered
with the USCF, however, they often times will send you
a renewal notice directly. Please ignore the renewal
notice from the USCF. We will renew your membership
for you. If you have any questions on this matter, please
contact us.
Last week we delivered over 25 Chess Club t-shirts to
those who ordered them. More went home this week. Please
check your childs backpack. If you do not receive
your t-shirt within a week of ordering, please let us
know. Wear your shirts every Monday with pride. They
may be worn to school all day on chess Mondays all year
long. You may order shirts at any time by using our
website. If anyone is interested in becoming our t-shirt
coordinator please contact Mark Raineri. Your duties
are few and you can satisfy your volunteering requirement
at the same time.
We would like to thank Kathleen Boldy for being our
new kindergarten chess coordinator. In addition to volunteering
at Monday classes, she will maintain the schedule of
other kindergarten parents who would like to volunteer
for the kindergarten classes. If you would like to help
at the kindergarten classes (10:30 to 11:50), please
see Kathleen so she can coordinate the schedule.
The Chess Club is hosting the Fourteenth Annual Fall
Classic Chess Tournament. It will be held in the JCPC
on Saturday, October 25, 2003. Tournament information
and registration forms are now available. Many parent
volunteers are needed to make the tournaments fun and
safe. Please be generous with your time. Chess parents
may be contacted soon to fill a shift on the 25th so
we thank you in advance for your cooperation. Should
your child play in the tournament? If you are not sure,
please speak with Richard Rico, Tournament Director.
There is a Novice section (K 3) as well as JV
and Championship sections, so please consider participating.
Often, Saturday sports (such as soccer games) can be
accommodated with a "bye". Again, see Richard
for details.
Find forms and information on the clipboards near Room
1B and on the Chess Club website http://home.earthlink.net/~spachess/
(we have a link on the school website "Links"
page). Direct questions to Richard Rico or Mark Raineri
by sending a note via the Black Bag to Chess or via
email at spachess@earthlink.net.
