Our festival team has worked tirelessly since last January catching the ups and downs of our “Surf’s Up,” to bring our community this grand celebration. We are eager to CATCH THE WAVE!

THANK YOU AND GOOD LUCK

On Monday, October 2nd, your oldest or only child took home the school directory. We offer our most sincere thanks to Mrs. Mark Li (Mai) for creating this eagerly awaited directory. Great job Mai. Please note the added feature this year: The SPA Glossary, created by our PWC President, Mary Kay Lalli.

PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN:

Last Thursday you received a brochure from the Archdiocese titled, “Working Together to Prevent Sexual Abuse.” As a school we leave no stone unturned to protect our children. We have a mandate to make sure that all teachers, staff, priests and volunteers (in all areas of our Church and School) participate in a three hour Virtus Workshop. These sessions are given all over the Archdiocese on a regular basis. At St. Paul’s we have arranged to have a presentation on campus. It will take place in the JCPC on October 19th from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. If you are unable to attend this session and wish to be a volunteer in our church or school, you MUST attend a workshop in another area of the Archdiocese. The web-site for this information is: www.virtusonline.org. Please realize that you will not be able to volunteer until you have done this training.

Weekly Readings/Reflections

Readings fo Sunday October 8

Reading 1
Gen 2:18-24

The LORD God said: "It is not good for the man to be alone.
I will make a suitable partner for him."
So the LORD God formed out of the ground
various wild animals and various birds of the air,
and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them;
whatever the man called each of them would be its name.
The man gave names to all the cattle,
all the birds of the air, and all wild animals;
but none proved to be the suitable partner for the man.

So the LORD God cast a deep sleep on the man,
and while he was asleep,
he took out one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh.
The LORD God then built up into a woman the rib
that he had taken from the man.
When he brought her to the man, the man said:
"This one, at last, is bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
this one shall be called 'woman, '
for out of 'her man’ this one has been taken."
That is why a man leaves his father and mother
and clings to his wife,
and the two of them become one flesh.

Gospel
Mk 10:2-16

The Pharisees approached Jesus and asked,
"Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?"
They were testing him.
He said to them in reply, "What did Moses command you?"
They replied,
"Moses permitted a husband to write a bill of divorce
and dismiss her."
But Jesus told them,
"Because of the hardness of your hearts
he wrote you this commandment.
But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female.
For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother
and be joined to his wife,
and the two shall become one flesh.
So they are no longer two but one flesh.
Therefore what God has joined together,
no human being must separate."
In the house the disciples again questioned Jesus about this.
He said to them,
"Whoever divorces his wife and marries another
commits adultery against her;
and if she divorces her husband and marries another,
she commits adultery."

And people were bringing children to him that he might touch them,
but the disciples rebuked them.
When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them,
"Let the children come to me;
do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to
such as these.
Amen, I say to you,
whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child
will not enter it."
Then he embraced them and blessed them,
placing his hands on them.

Student School Activies

Congratulations to the Varsity Flag Football team, on Monday October 2nd they captured the Championship in the Valley Classic Flag Football Tournament @ Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, the Saints defeated Holy trinity of San Pedro 8-6 in a great game with great sportsmanship shown by both teams.  The Saints won five games in 3 days in the tournament. Special thank you to all students, families and teachers who came out to cheer us on, we couldn’t do it without you. And thank you to all our coaches. This tournament traditionally names a MVP and this year’s recipient was our defense as a whole, it was truly a team effort. The Saints are 10-0 overall and 4-0 in league.  Come out and see them play. They still have 5 league games remaining and two great home games at Westwood Rec to come watch. They play on 10/11 vs. Brentwood and on 10/18 vs. American Martyrs both games are at 4p.m. at Westwood Rec Center Field 1350 S. Sepulveda.

The “B” Team of 5th & 6th graders is now 1-1 in league.  They opened league two weeks ago with a tough loss to St. Jerome to open league but bounced back the next week to defeat Frank Parent Middle School in great defensive epic 14-12, both Saints touchdowns were scored by the defense off interception returns, this was Frank Parents first loss in two seasons.

The “C” team of 3rd and 4th graders already began league play with Frank Parent School and they had a great 12-12 tie between them.

Come see all the teams play and cheer them on, GO SAINTS!

From School Nurse's Office

PARENTS PLEASE NOTE:

Medication, over the counter or prescription, may not be taken at school without a medication form on file in the Health Office! Cough drops are included! The Health Office cannot call for verbal permission to administer medication by phone!

Please remember that there are quite a few students with some type of nut allergy. Please be mindful of this when sending in birthday treats! Perhaps eliminating the choice of a treat with nuts would be best for all students. Some students have to ingest the nut to become ill while others need only to inhale!

Your cooperation in the above matter is appreciated by all.

Thank You,

Miss Anderson, BSN
