From the desk of Sister Stella

From the Desk of Sister Stella Maria, Principal:

Ash Wednesday is on February 6th and at 8:15am the school will have a prayer service, lead by the third grade, for the students to receive Ashes. All parents are welcome. At the moment it is time to receive Ashes, please follow the same procedure for receiving Communion.

On Thursday, through the brown envelopes, each family will receive a copy of The Catholic Update. It gives suggestions for a day-by-day through Lent – FASTING FROM OUR CLUTTER. Many of the daily activities are appropriate for both adults and children. Happy Lent!

We offer our most sincere congratulations to:

    • Mrs. Alessi and her debate team who won first place in a tournament at Windward last weekend. They have chalked-up more wins than some of the most academically competitive schools in the Southland.

    • Coach Keith and our varsity basketball team who were runners-up at the Loyola sponsored tournament. They played a great game!

    • Luke McEndarfer and the Paulist Choristers Scholars who performed with the L.A. Opera in Handel’s JUDAS MACCABAEUS, on January 26th at Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral.

It is with great pride, joy and gratitude that we announce the Fall Festival 2008 Team:

PWC President

Dear SPA Parents;

Circle, Circle, Circle.. does that ring a bell?  This is a friendly but firm reminder… we must circle the block in the afternoons!  We can not block the streets.  Last week was really bad and not because of the rain… This applies to the cars stacked up on Selby in front of Emerson as well as Holman.   Please, it is really becoming a problem and complaints have been made… People are getting to school really early and just sitting.. The buses can not get through and local traffic can’t either.  We are blocking the access from both Holman and Selby.  Arrive a little later and you won’t have to circle.  I really don’t like standing in the rain asking everyone to circle.. it isn’t good for the hair…just kidding.. but I am SERIOUS about the circling.

I hope that the Third grade families enjoyed your Potluck .  It is a special time for your children to share with you, parents.  Saturday, February 9th is the Past Presidents/Alumnae Luncheon… any questions, please direct to Kimberly Harold.

Save the Date for:  Ski Trip February 29th to March 2nd any questions please contact Wendy Lightbourn or Anne Marie Scibelli.  The SPA Golf Tournament will be at Mountain Gate Country Club on Monday, April 14th.  Grandparents Day is Friday, April 25th and the Spring Event will be held on May 10th, more information to follow.

Have a great week: thought for the week:

Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us.

2 Timothy 3:17

Weekly Readings/Reflections

Readings for Sunday February 2

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reading 1

Zep 2:3;3:12-13

Seek the LORD, all you humble of the earth,

who have observed his law;

seek justice, seek humility;

perhaps you may be sheltered

on the day of the LORD’s anger.

But I will leave as a remnant in your midst

a people humble and lowly,

who shall take refuge in the name of the LORD.

the remnant of Israel.

They shall do no wrong

and speak no lies; nor shall there be found in their mouths

a deceitful tongue; they shall pasture and couch their flocks

with none to disturb them.

Gospel

Mt 5:1-12a

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain,

and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him.

He began to teach them, saying:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,

for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they who mourn,

for they will be comforted.

Blessed are the meek,

for they will inherit the land.

Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,

for they will be satisfied

Blessed are the merciful,

for they will be shown mercy,

Blessed are the clean of heart,

for they will see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers,

for they will be called children of God.

Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,

for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you

and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me.

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven.”

          Musical Theatre

Here is the schedule for February.  Don’t forget that if you are in grades 1st – 3rd you are considered the ensemble cast.  So your rehearsals are on the days that say ensemble cast.  Our bake sale is coming up on February 15th.  You will be receiving information about how to get involved at rehearsal so be on the look out for that information.  We are hoping to raise money so that the cast can have special musical theatre t-shirts.  The show will be here before you know it!  It’s very important that you show up to rehearsal.  We only have about 12 rehearsals left!  No matter what character you play, you are important to the show and it slows us down when you do not show up; everyone is counting on you!

February 6th - Principal cast

February 13th - Ensemble cast

February 20th - Principal cast
