From the desk of Sister Stella

"Happiness is not so much in having as sharing. We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." Norman MacEwan

From the Desk of Sister Stella Maria, Principal

As we celebrate the great feast of St. Paul the Apostle, we wish our Paulist Fathers many blessings and thank them for their inspirational ministry throughout their many years of service to our parish.
The students drive for the victims of the disaster in South East Asia will conclude on Thursday Jan. 20th. We will publish the results next week which will include the matching gifts we have been promised.

On Friday Jan. 21st our fourth graders will lead us in our school liturgy as we celebrate the Feast of St. Paul. At this liturgy a representative from St. Joseph's Center will announce the Read-A-thon (Read to Feed Program). Our first Graders are in charge of this wonderful outreach event.

Our Drug Education program was excellent and very well received by the faculty and students from grades five through eight. The information imparted to the parents was outstanding. About thirty parents participated. We understand the light attendance due to the incredible rain flooding and mudslides.

After Easter we will begin the Human Sexuality education for our eight graders. After much research we have found an excellent presenter. There will be an evening for eight grade parents before the classes begin for students. For the school year 2005--2006 the Human Sexuality education will cover from grades five through---all age appropriate--all with information shared with parents.

Personal Grooming:
Many students come to school each day looking spic and span. Some students just roll out of bed, put on wrinkled (sometimes unwashed) uniforms, hair not combed--certainly not showing too much respect for themselves or anyone else. GOOD GROOMING IS CONSIDERED PART OF THE UNIFORM CODE.
Parents, please help. Thank You.

Dear SPA Families:

I hope that many parents were able to attend the drug awareness evening for "Miles to Go." I hear the 5th – 8th grade children discussing the many facts and details they have learned from their sessions on drug awareness.

The 3rd grade sleepover in the JCPC was a resounding success! Many thanks to all the parents who helped to chaperone, as well as the 3rd grade teachers, Father Tom, and especially Joanne Drake for her superb organization of this fun event! The 6th grade sleepover will be held this Friday. We still need chaperones for that evening! Contact Joanne Drake or myself if you can help out.
Have a great short week!

Weekly Readings/Reflections

January 23, 2005
Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Psalm: Sunday 7

Reading I
Is 8:23..9:3

First the LORD degraded the land of Zebulun
and the land of Naphtali;
but in the end he has glorified the seaward road,
the land west of the Jordan,
the District of the Gentiles.
Anguish has taken wing, dispelled is darkness:
for there is no gloom where but now there was distress.
The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom
a light has shone.
You have brought them abundant joy
and great rejoicing,
as they rejoice before you as at the harvest,
as people make merry when dividing spoils.
For the yoke that burdened them,
the pole on their shoulder,
and the rod of their taskmaster
you have smashed, as on the day of Midian.

Reading II
1 Cor 1:10.13, 17

I urge you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
that all of you agree in what you say,
and that there be no divisions among you,
but that you be united in the same mind and in the same purpose.
For it has been reported to me about you, my brothers and sisters,
by Chloe's people, that there are rivalries among you.
I mean that each of you is saying,
"I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos,"
or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ."
Is Christ divided?
Was Paul crucified for you?
Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?
For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel,
and not with the wisdom of human eloquence,
so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its meaning

Gospel
Mt 4:12.23 or 4:12-17

When Jesus heard that John had been arrested,
he withdrew to Galilee.
He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum by the sea,
in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali,
that what had been said through Isaiah the prophet
might be fulfilled:
Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan,
Galilee of the Gentiles,
the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light,
on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death
light has arisen.
From that time on, Jesus began to preach and say,
"Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
As he was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers,
Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew,
casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen.
He said to them,
"Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men."
At once they left their nets and followed him.
He walked along from there and saw two other brothers,
James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John.
They were in a boat, with their father Zebedee, mending their nets.
He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father
and followed him.
He went around all of Galilee,
teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom,
and curing every disease and illness among the people.

3RD GRADE SLEEPOVER FOLLOW-UP

The 3rd Grade Sleepover at the JCPC last Friday was a rousing success! We had a great dinner, viewed an "INCREDIBLE" movie and had a lot of fun just being together. Most importantly, everyone stayed safe and we left the JCPC in the same condition we found it. Special thanks go out to the room parents -- Marchell Hilliard and Kim Combs -- for their shopping, food coordination, set-up and around-the clock vigil. Equal time must be given to the many other extraordinary parents who set up camp in the JCPC and gave their 150% attention through the night to every aspect of the event and individual need. A number of parents stayed until all the students were quieted down and then graciously returned early on Sautrday morning to help clean up. Special thanks go out to: Terry Curtin for providing the movie, Tom & Debbie Buderwitz for their expertise (and extra time) in setting up the audio and sound equipment, Coach Eddie & Coach Suizzo for the use of the exercise mats, Eric in the Parish Office for his constant attention to our unexpected round-the-clock requests, Mrs. Damski and Mrs. Buchanan for giving up their Friday night to be with us, Julie Chait for her attention to our medical needs and the great sacrifice of time, Sister Stella for allowing us to hold the event (and for visiting with us after the movie), and finally, Father Tom for sharing a special goodnight prayer and trusting us to make it all work.

As a reminder, if you haven’t had a chance to fulfill your bid for the Sleepover from the Festival Live Auction, we encourage you to send in your donation check as soon as possible (made payable to the PWC). We are grateful for your attention to this final phase of the 2004 festival. Individual pledge sheets were sent home at the end of October, but if you did not receive one or have questions regarding the amount you owe, please contact Joanne Drake at her home number in the directory.

ATTENTION
SKI CLUB PARTICIPANTS
VOLUNTEERS & BAKED GOODS
NEEDED FOR
SKI CLUB BAKE SALE

On Friday, January 28th we will be having our Ski Club Bake Sale. We would greatly appreciate it if all participants would help with this endeavor to raise money to offset some of the costs of our Mammoth trip.

We are in need of baked goods (cupcakes, cookies, brownies, etc.). Once again, we will be taking orders for Krispy Kreme doughnuts and Diddy Reese cookies for anyone interested in going this route.

We also need four helpers for each recess time which is only 20 minutes in length: 9:25, 9:45, 10:05

Please contact Marcie Newby (# in the school directory) to let her know whether you will be able to volunteer, bring baked goods, and/or place a doughnut or cookie order. All goods should be brought to the Pavilion on Friday morning, January 28th at drop-off.

Many thanks for your support.
The Pluegers
