From the desk of Sister Stella

“Every life God creates adds something of value to the world…”

-- David McElroy, O. Praem

From the Desk of Sister Stella Maria, Principal:

On Sunday, January 20th, the 9:00am Mass will be offered for the healing of Eric Ferris. This liturgy has been arranged by Michael Martin, who is the father of a first grade child. Mr. Martin has many friends and acquaintances around the world who, will be connected with us in prayer throughout Mass; we will cross all time zones. Prayer is the greatest power on Earth. Thank you, Mr. Martin.

The 11:00am Mass on Sunday will open a year of thanksgiving and celebration for the 150 years of service that the Paulist Fathers have given to the Church.

Throughout the week of January 13th, the results of the ITBS were mailed to families who have students in grades two through eight. The faculty has taken the time, at two of our Inservices, to study the results very carefully. We have noted both the strengths and the weaknesses to adjust the curriculum accordingly. These tests were taken at the end of September and measure the students’ progress from the previous year. We are pleased with the overall growth as we continue to ask ourselves, “how can we do what we are doing better?”

During our first week back from Christmas, the teachers and I conducted grade level meetings with our students. The purpose of these meetings was to engage the children to ask themselves in what area of their life they need to grow as the New Year began. The students were very attentive as we summarized all of our school rules into three simple aspects:

  • Take care of yourself (from waking up until going to bed).
  • Take care of each other (through kindness, respect and inclusion).
  • Take care of this place (wherever you are during your day).

To our sixth, seventh and eighth grade parents -- thank you for your cooperation in attending our Drug Education Program on Thursday, Jan. 10th. I have received great positive feedback from many Moms and Dads. I also appreciated the courtesy of a phone call or note from parents who had a schedule conflict. Thank you!

Please be aware that St. Paul the Apostle School will have Summer School this year. Mrs. Buchanan will very shortly send out programs and registration materials.

Dear SPA Parents:

Thank you to Sister Stella, faculty, and staff for coordinating the informative program for parents and children about SPA’s school drug education program, “Miles to Go”.

This year’s “Book Fair Blizzard” was quite the storm… what a success.  Thank you to Justine Martin for coordinating this event and to all parents who set-up, sold books, manned the cash registers and of course, cleaned up.  These wonderful events which benefit our school could not happen without each and every one of our parent volunteers.

Just a reminder that this Friday there will be a Bake Sale.  Next Monday, January 21st there is NO SCHOOL.  It is Martin Luther King Day.  Wednesday, anuary 23rd is the 4th grade Potluck.  The Liturgy begins promptly at 6:30 in the church. Enjoy the special night with your child.  On Friday, January 25th the school celebrates the Feast of St Paul the Apostle.  In honor of his feast day the Room Parents have arranged a small treat for all of the children on Friday after Mass.

This Sunday, January 20th we will celebrate the opening Liturgy for the Paulist 150th celebration at the 11:00 a.m. Mass.

Have a great week-thought for the week:God has said, “I will never leave you; I will never abandon you.”  Hebrews 13:5

Weekly Readings/Reflections

READINGS FOR SUNDAY
January 20, 2008
Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reading 1
Is 49:3, 5-6

The LORD said to me: You are my servant,
Israel, through whom I show my glory.
Now the LORD has spoken
who formed me as his servant from the womb,
that Jacob may be brought back to him
and Israel gathered to him;
and I am made glorious in the sight of the LORD,
and my God is now my strength!
It is too little, the LORD says, for you to be my servant,
to raise up the tribes of Jacob,
and restore the survivors of Israel;
I will make you a light to the nations,
that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.

Gospel
Jn 1:29-34

John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him and said,
“Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.
He is the one of whom I said,
‘A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me
because he existed before me.’
I did not know him,
but the reason why I came baptizing with water
was that he might be made known to Israel.”
John testified further, saying,
“I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from heaven
and remain upon him.
I did not know him,
but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me,
‘On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain,
he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’
Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God.”

PA Chess Club

LOVE playing chess?  Get ready for the SPA Valentine’s Tournament!

Mark your calendars for Saturday morning, February 9th when the Annual SPA Winter Chess Classic gets a new twist in the JCPC.  Since we LOVE learning and we LOVE chess, it seems fitting that Valentine’s Week is a good time to honor the world’s oldest board game with a VALENTINE’sCONTEST.  Design a poster of your favorite chess piece in any style you want and attach a small essay on why this particular piece is your favorite.  What is special about your choice?  How does it help your strategy?  Make your posters as creative as you want.  Tournament Director Ivona Jezierska will choose the prize-winning entry.  Registration forms are in the BLACK BAG

In other Chess Club News:  SPA will host Westwood Charter for a fun match on Monday, January 28th, in the Multipurpose Room from 3:00 to 4:30.  Jack Peters will assemble a team of SPA players during the coming week.  Students who are not currently participating in Chess Club are welcome to join in the match.  Let Jack Peters know of your availability via email at our web site.  We need all of our Chess Club alums to help push St. Paul’s to another victory.

Jack Peters has added a new dimension of learning for the Advanced Class.  Starting next week, all players will keep track of their chess moves on an official chess scorecard, just like the top players around the world.  At the end of class, Jack will collect the scorecards, review them during the week and choose one to be highlighted during the following week’s lesson.  The Intermediate Class will soon be doing the same thing so that the students can share all that brain power!

Thank you to all of the parents who have already signed up to volunteer for at least one Monday afternoon during this Winter Trimester.  If you haven’t done so yet, go to the Volunteers page on our web site and pick a Monday that can work for your schedule.  Three parents are needed for each of the three Chess Club classes that meet on Monday afternoons.  Just email us your preferred date(s).
