“A child is not a vessel to be filled, but a lamp to be lit.”
From the Desk of Sister Stella Maria, Principal:
We are delighted to welcome all of our Parents, Students, Faculty and Staff to the new school year. May this year of 2007-2008 be filled with many blessings for each of us. As we approach this coming year, let us move with thoughtfulness, reflection and always allow ourselves a little more time than we need for each activity and project. See to it that your child arrives in school on-time and prepared for a very productive day. If you allow ten extra minutes for the drive to school, it is a great gift to give your child.
We offer our most sincere thanks to the Parents Working for Children Board, our Room Parents, Festival Chairs, Heads of various committees for their organization, hard work and thoughtfulness throughout the summer months. All of your dedication has ensured a smooth entry to our new school year.
We look forward to seeing all of our parents at Back to School Night on Monday, September 17th. Parking on the school yard will be available that evening, and the program will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m. In the Church, please sit according to your child’s grade level.
At 7:40 p.m. all parents and teachers will move to their respective areas. Please follow the flow chart in the packet that you will receive upon arrival. The classroom presentations will be followed by a reception in the Pavilion at approximately 9:15 p.m.
Parents, if your child was required to participate in an academic program during the summer, please send us a record of the work. Once evidence has been received, we will send your end of the year report card. Thank you to those who have already sent us their records.
Grades Two through Eight will take the Iowa Test of Basic Skills on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday the week of September 24th and the week of October 1st. Testing will always take place in the morning hours. If your child is ill, please do not send him/her to school to take the test. It is not the end of the world to miss a section of the test. These tests are given every year mostly to let us know the strengths and weakness of our curriculum.
Instrumental Music Program
1. The St. Paul the Apostle School Music Program is open to all students in grades one through eight.
2. The program is directed by Larry Newman. Marisa Kuney is the violin and cello specialist.
3. Weekly classes are offered for 30 to 40 minutes after school each Wednesday.
4. Instruction is available on violin and cello. (Students must be in at least third grade to choose the cello.)
5. The exact time of your child’s class will be determined when enrollment is complete. Please reserve the time block of 3:10 p.m. – 5:10 p.m. on Wednesday s. The 30 to 40 minute lesson may be scheduled anytime during that period based on the ages and playing experiences of the applicants. To help you plan, beginning players will be scheduled closer to 3:10 p.m. and experienced players will be later in the afternoon. Exact lesson times will be e-mailed to all applicants when registration is complete. Classes are available for students with no prior experience as well as experienced players.
6. Instruction begins on Wednesday, October 3rd and runs through the school year, culminating with a school concert in May 2008.
7. A music fee of $250.00 per semester (October through January & February through May) is requested from each participant. This fee includes all music, books and basic supplies which your child is given. The only other expense will be the lease, rental or purchase of the instrument.
8. Instruments can be rented or purchased from our online instrument dealer and will be delivered free to school for the first lesson. The website is www.stringseason.com

PWC
President
Dear SPA Parents,
Welcome back!! I hope everyone had a wonderful summer and that you are ready and rested for the 2007-2008 school year. Thank you to the faculty and staff who have been working hard to prepare for a great school year. The PWC has been busy planning events for you and your children for this upcoming year.
Thank you, Molly Harrigan, Denise Kilroy, and Stephanie Yunker for making us all feel welcome at the “piratey” Back to School Coffee. Joyce Keeler, you did a great job for organizing and running the uniform exchange. Christi Catalano, our Hot Lunch Representative, has been busy. Don’t forget to place or modify your hot lunch orders by the Wednesday prior at their NEW website: <http://www.campuskitchen.net/>www.campuskitchen.net. There are still volunteer spots which need to be filled for hot lunch and playground duty-please sign up at your respective grade coffees. If your group is interested in having a bake sale this year, please contact Cindy Deutsch.
Well… that time is almost here…Festival!!. Jill O’Callahan and her amazing crew have been busy at work- in case you forgot…the dates are October 12,-14th. Be prepared to have the best time ever!
Mark your calendars for Back to School Night-Monday, September 17th. If you are thinking of joining Racquettes- please note-the address was printed incorrectly on the sheet sent out.. It should read: Jennifer Ruddell at 3330 NOT 330 Club Drive. It was great seeing all of you at the grade coffees. Thank you to our Head Room Parent Chairs, Agnes Kenworthy, Kruse and Marchell Hilliard and their wonderful group of room parents for a job well done!!
Until Next Week…

Parish
News
Older Children Needing Baptism or First Communion?
Parents, do you have a child in Third through Eighth Grade who is in need of the Sacrament(s) of Baptism and/or Eucharist? If so, the parish program that will help your child and you move toward these important spiritual opportunities is called the "RCIA Adapted for Children." This is the normative way a child of this age receives these sacraments, and you will find it a wonderful experience for yourself, your child and, even, the rest of your family.
To inquire or register, please call the Coordinator, Irene Holly, in the Parish Office at (310) 474-1527, ext. 212.

Weekly
Readings/Reflections
Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Psalm: Sunday 34
Reading 1
Ex 32:7-11, 13-14
The LORD said to Moses,
“Go down at once to your people,
whom you brought out of the land of Egypt,
for they have become depraved.
They have soon turned aside from the way I pointed out to them,
making for themselves a molten calf and worshiping it,
sacrificing to it and crying out,
‘This is your God, O Israel,
who brought you out of the land of Egypt!’
“I see how stiff-necked this people is, ” continued the LORD to Moses.
Let me alone, then,
that my wrath may blaze up against them to consume them.
Then I will make of you a great nation.”
But Moses implored the LORD, his God, saying,
“Why, O LORD, should your wrath blaze up against your own people,
whom you brought out of the land of Egypt
with such great power and with so strong a hand?
Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Israel,
and how you swore to them by your own self, saying,
‘I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky;
and all this land that I promised,
I will give your descendants as their perpetual heritage.’”
So the LORD relented in the punishment
he had threatened to inflict on his people.
Gospel
Lk 15:1-32 or 15:1-10
Tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to Jesus,
but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying,
“This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”
So to them he addressed this parable.
“What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them
would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert
and go after the lost one until he finds it?
And when he does find it,
he sets it on his shoulders with great joy
and, upon his arrival home,
he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them,
‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.’
I tell you, in just the same way
there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents
than over ninety-nine righteous people
who have no need of repentance.
“Or what woman having ten coins and losing one
would not light a lamp and sweep the house,
searching carefully until she finds it?
And when she does find it,
she calls together her friends and neighbors
and says to them,
‘Rejoice with me because I have found the coin that I lost.’
In just the same way, I tell you,
there will be rejoicing among the angels of God
over one sinner who repents.”

SPA
ChessClub
St. Paul the Apostle Chess Club: 20 Years of Thinking Ahead, 1987-2007
Chess Club begins Sept. 24thand Kindergarten begins Oct. 22nd
It’s time to break out the chessboards again as Jack Peters will soon begin teaching another year of Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced chess. The format is the same as before: Monday afternoons from 3:00 to 4:00 for Beginner and Intermediate, and 3:00 to 4:30 for Advanced. Locations for Beginner and Intermediate classrooms will be announced shortly. The Advanced class will continue to meet in the Church classroom. Beginning Monday, October 22ndh, Kindergarten students who wish to join the Chess Club may do so then.
We ask all Chess Club parents who are able to volunteer at least one Monday to please sign up at the Chess Club’s web site, www.spachess.org and follow the directions at the home page. The success of the Chess Club is dependent upon allof our terrific volunteers. Two parents per classroom is essential to keep order, help the students get set up and distribute a healthy snack and drink. Parent volunteers are asked to bring enough snacks for 30 students per classroom. This is a great opportunity to spend time with the students and sit in on a chess lesson from our in-house International Master! Jack’s chess column appears every Sunday in the Los Angeles Times.
If you haven’t sent in your child’s application form, there is still time. We ask that you place the form and your check in an envelope and place it in the Black Bag. The cost is the same as last year, $75 per term (Fall, Winter, Spring) or$200 for the whole year. In addition, there is a $30 fee, per student, to cover Club expenses. Applications can be downloaded from our web site or picked up from the Black Bag. In addition, look for information on our web site about tee-shirts, Checkmate Café at Pirates’ Cove on Friday, October 12th, and the St. Paul’s Fall Classic Chess Tournament on Saturday, November 10th.. Thank you.
