From the desk of Sister Stella

" Christian goodness and charity must permeate all the activity of
every Christian whether personal or social."
John XX111.

From the Desk of Sister Stella:

" Christianity is not about rules or rituals; it is about a love-relationship with God that colors our every other relationship. The love of God while intensely personal, also embraces the whole world. It affects how we treat others. As St. John writes: ' If anyone says, I love God, and hates his brother and sister, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother and sister whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen'. (Jn. 4:20). This is why we worship as a community every Sunday at Mass. That is why the writer of Hebrews warns us not to neglect meeting together in prayer and worship and urges us to encourage one another. (Heb. 10:25). It is also the reason why James stresses the importance of faith and works." Jas. (2; 14-26).

Prayer

Father, forgive me each time I profess my love for you and then go on to snub my irritating brother or sister, or ignore my crotchety neighbor or snap at my bossy coworker.
(Excerpt from BIBLE ALIVE)

We continue to ask your prayers for S. Cris. She is not in the very best of health at the moment. Currently, she is in long-term disability. I doubt very much that she will return by year-end. S. Cris had already decided that she would retire from teaching in June, so we had researched and found a highly qualified Spanish teacher, S. Karin Miranda. S. Miranda will substitute for S. Cris until June and will and then will be on the faculty for the school year 2003-2004.

By now, Parents, you have received your children's report cards.
Once again, I read each child’s card. I was extremely pleased with the great growth of so many students. A very small percentage of students dropped to a "U" in effort and behavior. This is not progress and needs to be reversed during this final trimester--please have a very serious conversation with your child if you are seeing a drop in grades. Behavior and effort usually define the academic grade.

Parent Information

March 24, 2003

Dear Parents,

St. Paul the Apostle School in conjunction with the School Board is continually seeking ways to improve the quality of education for our children while controlling the spiraling costs of tuition.

One important way to hold costs down is through solid tuition collection that gives the school access to a regular cash flow. In pursuit of this end, we have looked into many alternatives. After much research and many recommendations, we have decided to change tuition management companies beginning with the new school year.

St. Paul’s has contracted with FACTS Management Company. FACTS Provides service to over 3500 schools nationwide with a number of those schools represented within the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

          FACTS
offers a program that better meets the needs of our parents. Below are listed the different payment plan options:

          1.    Full Payment – Under this plan the entire amount of tuition is paid on before June 6, 2003. This payment is made directly to the school office.

          2.   Monthly Payment --- This option offers 12 monthly auto-deductions
from a checking or savings account starting in June. Those choosing this payment plan need to authorize their bank to make the payment on the 5th or 20 of each month. The sign-up form will be provided by FACTS. It is important to know that neither St. Paul’s or FACTS have access to your account.

          3.   FACTS payments can also be made by way of a VISA , Master Card or Discover. There is a small convenience fee for this method.

Please read the brochure provided for you about how FACTS works. We think that you will find it informative and that the transition will be smooth.

Sincerely,

Sister Stella Maria Enright, DMJ
Principal

Weekly Readings/Reflections

Next Sunday, April 6, is the Fifth Sunday of Lent
Please read and reflect on these readings during the week (alone or with family and friends), and come to next Sunday’s liturgy prepared to listen attentively to the proclamation of the Word of God.

READING I Jeremiah 31:31-34

The days are coming, says the LORD,
when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah.
It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers
the day I took them by the hand to lead them forth from the land of Egypt;
for they broke my covenant, and I had to show myself their master, says the LORD.
But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD.
I will place my law within them and write it upon their hearts;
I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
No longer will they have need to teach their friends and relatives how to know the LORD.
All, from least to greatest, shall know me, says the LORD,
for I will forgive their evildoing and remember their sin no more.

READING II Hebrews 5:7-9

In the days when Christ Jesus was in the flesh,
he offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to the one
who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.
Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered; and when he was made perfect,
he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.

GOSPEL John 12:20-33

Some Greeks who had come to worship at the Passover Feast came to Philip,
who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, "Sir, we would like to see Jesus."
Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus.
Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.
Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies,
it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit.
Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life.
Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be.
The Father will honor whoever serves me.
"I am troubled now. Yet what should I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'?
But it was for this purpose that I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name."
Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it and will glorify it again."

The crowd there heard it and said it was thunder; but others said, "An angel has spoken to him."
Jesus answered and said, "This voice did not come for my sake but for yours.
Now is the time of judgment on this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out.
And when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself."
He said this indicating the kind of death he would die.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT (April 6)

READINGS God says to Israel, "I will write my law on your hearts.
You will be my people and I will be your God."
Through obedience and suffering, Jesus became the source of salvation.
By dying, the grain of wheat produces much fruit; a symbol of Jesus work of redemption.

WHAT I HEAR What do I hear about God’s promise and what does that mean for me?
What do the readings say about the conflicts in the world?

MY FAITH JOURNEY What am I willing to do to stay true to Christ?

FOR CHILDREN Have you ever grown something from seed?
Jesus helps us to understand what life after death is like by using this idea.
Jesus wants us to stay true friends with him all our lives. How can we show we are his friends?

Miscellaneous

It’s not too late to sign-up for the
27th Annual St. Paul’s Family Campout!

Last Saturday’s campout sign-ups went very well. However, if you missed out, or you’ve been thinking of inviting those cousins from Minneapolis, friends from your old neighborhood, or family members from Cape Cod, there is still time to join in on the fun! We still have 8 King Cabins, 8 Tents, 2 Queen Cabins and 2 Bunk Cabins left. If we don’t fill the campground with St. Paul’s-related campers, they will open it up to the general public. Don’t wait, don’t hesitate…call Danny Amos to reserve a space.
