" Too many people overvalue what they are not and undervalue what they
are." (Malcolm S. Forbes)

From the Desk of SSM

Parents on behalf of all of the teachers I thank you for your prompt response to your conferences with your children's teachers. Reflecting on the above quotation I hope your are appreciating the gifts and talents of your own child and not wishing he/she would be like some other child. Each child is special and unique and the key to success in life is the effort that is placed in each event of the day.

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has under the direction Meitle Consultants researched and written a Strategic Plan for Catholic Schools in Los Angeles. It has six major sections, starting next week we will give you the complete introduction and on the following weeks we will share with you an executive summary of each section. The entire document is thirty pages. The school board will address each section as it pertains to us. I must say it is a very exciting document and paints a great picture of hope for catholic schools.

It is our tradition at St. Paul's not to spend much time celebrating Halloween. We tell the children the festival was their school Halloween daytime party. We pray that they will have a fun and safe evening celebrations.

On Saturday evening Nov.1st there will be a beautiful Mozart Requiem Mass at 7:30pm. This Mass will be offered for all our friends and relatives who have died. Starting at 7:00pm the names written in the Book of the Dead will be read aloud. If you would like a name to be read aloud, just drop into church and fill in the name. This is a very beautiful way to honor our dead. Thank you Chris Walker and choirs for providing this wondrous experience.

On Monday Nov. 3rd each student will take home a note with information pertaining to WESTSIDE THANKSGIVING CELEBRATION AND DINNER. We have been asked to help and we have elected to do the hygiene piece: BARS OF SOAP/ COMBS/ TOOTHBRUSHES/TOOTPASTE/SHAMPOO ETC. Each homeroom will have a large plastic bag that we will start filling on Tuesday Nov. 4th and it will be picked up full on Friday. Darryl Crowley is leading this project at St. Paul's School. The church is collecting socks under the direction of Toni Nolan. Also if you have empty grocery bags place them in the carton outside my door as of Tuesday Nov. 4th.They will be very helpful for distribution. As you know at Thanksgiving we collect food for St. Joseph's and they really count on us to feed their homeless. That is why we are doing hygiene items for Westside.

Dear SPA Families:

Festival Wrap-Up

This year’s Festival was successful in many ways. It brought us together as a community. It was effective in encouraging new families to participate. We were entertained and the children had a ton of fun. Our tremendous Festival Treasurer, Carol Page, has worked very hard over the past two weeks assembling the Festival financial report. While all the expenses have not been turned in, based on the reimbursements from past years this Festival should net an amount in excess of $250,000. We are so grateful for all the hard work that went into this weekend. Special thanks to our five Festival Chairs, Patti DiTullio, Mary Kay Lalli, Jill O’Callahan, Susan Reed and Kelley Workman. Thank you for your spirit of giving.

Sixth Grade Liturgy and Potluck

Don’t forget the sixth grade Liturgy and Potluck, Wednesday, November 5. Food is to be dropped off in the JCPC at 6:15 PM. The Liturgy will begin at 6:30 PM at the altar in front of Our Lady in the Church. At 7:15 PM, you will return to the JCPC for dinner.

Have a safe and Happy Halloween!

Karen Knott
PWC President

Weekly Readings/Reflections

Next Sunday, November 2, is The Commemoration of All The Faithful Departed (All Souls).
Please read and reflect on these readings during the week (alone or with family and friends), and come to next Sunday’s liturgy prepared to listen attentively to the proclamation of the Word of God.

READING I Isaiah 25:6, 7-9

On this mountain the LORD of hosts will provide for all peoples.
On this mountain he will destroy the veil that veils all peoples,
the web that is woven over all nations; he will destroy death forever.
The Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces;
The reproach of his people he will remove from the whole earth; for the LORD has spoken.
On that day it will be said:
"Behold our God, to whom we looked to save us!
This is the LORD for whom we looked; let us rejoice and be glad that he has saved us!"

READING II 1 Corinthians 15:20-26, 28

Brothers and sisters:
Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
For since death came through man, the resurrection of the dead came also through man.
For just as in Adam all die, so too in Christ shall all be brought to life, but each one in proper order:
Christ the firstfruits; then, at his coming, those who belong to Christ;
then comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom to his God and Father,
when he has destroyed every sovereignty and every authority and power.
For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.
The last enemy to be destroyed is death.
When everything is subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected
to the one who subjected everything to him, so that God may be all in all.

GOSPEL John 6:37-40

Jesus said to the crowds:
"Everything that the Father gives me will come to me,
and I will not reject anyone who comes to me,
because I came down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me.
And this is the will of the one who sent me,
that I should not lose anything of what he gave me,
but that I should raise it on the last day.
For this is the will of my Father,
that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life,
and I shall raise him on the last day

."All Souls (November 2)

READINGS The Lord will save all his people;
On the last day, Christ will hand over the kingdom to the Father;
and then everyone who believes shall be raised and have eternal life.

WHAT I HEAR Can I feel the absolute joy contained in the words of today’s readings?

MY FAITH JOURNEY Am I truly one who believes? Will I have eternal life?

FOR CHILDREN We know that we will all meet in heaven.
What will you say to God when you meet?

Girls’ Volleyball

Purple Team

Last week was a busy week for the Purple Team. Here are the results of the week’s play:
;    Win - home game against St. Joan of Arc (15-7, 15-0)
;    Win - away game against St. Tim’s (15-1, 15-6)
;    Win - home game against Notre Dame Academy (15-7, 13-15, 15-7)
The team’s record now stands at 10-0!
The girls finished the week at the Cobra Cup tournament at St. Mark’s with an impressive 5th place finish out of 22 teams in their pool. Amy in 8A was awarded All Tournament Honors – congratulations Amy! The CYO playoffs are this Saturday and Sunday – good luck Saints!

Green Team

On Friday, the 17th, the Green Team traveled to play Marlborough at home where they suffered a disappointing defeat. Marlborough narrowly won the first game 15-13. Despite SPA’s efforts, Marlborough also won the second game.

On Monday, the Green Team traveled to Oaks Christian for a double-header. The Green Team easily defeated both Oaks Christian teams 2-0 and 2-0. On Tuesday, the Green Team played Harvard Westlake in an exciting competition. SPA won the first game easily as Claire led the team to victory with a 5 point serving stand. But then SPA was required to fight off an inspired HW team in the second game. Many exciting, heart-stopping points were played in this game which SPA won 15-11 especially when Rachel saved several wild sets and Christina spiked the ball numerous times. Injured team member, Jessica, called lines.

The weekend found the entire Green Team participating in the Cobra Classic at St. Mark’s School in Venice. After an exhausting day of playing multiple matches, the Green Team met St. Anastasia’s in the J.V. Championship Round. The game was nip and tuck, with each side answering the other, point by point. The Green Team was victorious, however, defeating the St. Anastasia’s team, 17-15 with Chloe serving the last two points. The court erupted into cheers and screams as the Green Team brought home the Championship Gold Cup for St. Paul the Apostle School.

Christina, Mary and Carleen were the Most Valuable and All Tournament Players.
Next week, the Green Team will end the regular season with a final match against the Harvard Westlake Red Team. GO GREEN

White Team

The White Team also participated in the Cobra Cup tournament at St. Mark’s on Saturday. The team played outstanding volleyball with a 1st place finish in their pool! All Tournament Honors were awarded to Mary in 6B, Angelica in 6A, and Molly in 6A. Congratulations, girls, and to the entire team for their outstanding play.

Red Team

The Red Team continued their winning streak last week with a home match against another SPA team, followed by an away match against St. Martin of Tours. The first match resulted in a 15-7, 15-2 win for the Red Team. The 15-7, 10-15, 15-8 win against St. Martin of Tours brought the team’s record to 4-0. Congratulations to the Red Team!

From the School Nurse

HEAD LICE ALERT!

Recently, head lice was reported in the fourth grade and kindergarten. Please read the following and check your child this weekend!

Your child, any child, can get head lice
. It is no cause for anger, guilt, or fear. It has nothing to do with cleanliness and does not reflect poorly on you as a parent. Treatment with a non-prescription medication followed by careful cleaning of the house and car usually solves the problem. If the lice become resistant, you may need to ask your Pediatrician for a prescription medication.

Infestation is not related to personal cleanliness or the level of hygiene in this school. Head lice are transmitted by head-to-head contact or on shared personal items, such as hats, combs, brushes, scarves, sleeping bags and stuffed animals. To minimize the risk of repeated outbreaks, remind your children not to share these items.

The first clue that may lead to detection of head lice is the frequent and intense scratching of the scalp. To check for infestation, carefully examine the hair around the back of the neck and behind the ears. You are looking for tiny white eggs (nits) on hair shafts. Since head lice shy away from light, you may only see their eggs (nits), small, whitish and of uniform size attached to the hair shaft. Head lice themselves are small grayish-tan insects without wings. Any family member with signs or symptoms should be treated immediately. Please remember full application of shampoo is required.

After treatment, take these steps to keep your family members and home environment lice-free:
1. Soak all combs, brushes, etc., in hot water (over 130 F) for 10 minutes.

2. Wash exposed clothing, bed linens, and towels in hot water and dry, in a dryer, on hot cycle for at least twenty minutes. Items not machine washable must be dry cleaned or stored at room temperature in a tightly sealed plastic bag for at least two weeks. Items such as helmets should be similarly bagged and stored.

3. Vacuum mattresses, upholstered furniture, pillows, carpets, and car seats.
Head lice cannot survive without a human host. They cannot survive on family pets. Choose an effective treatment, use as directed, and perform the steps listed above to eliminate head lice from your home and to help prevent their spread in the community.

PLEASE INFORM THE SCHOOL NURSE AS SOON AS YOU KNOW THERE IS A PROBLEM. THIS ENABLES THE NURSE TO GET A HEAD START ON CLASSROOM CHECKS BEFORE THERE IS A MAJOR SPREAD OF LICE IN THE CLASSROOMS!
IT DOES NOT BENEFIT ANYONE TO WAIT UNTIL AFTER YOU
have shampooed several times to get rid of the lice, to inform the School Nurse. Chances are your child has infected others and after being clean gets re-infected, thus causing a vicious circle! Please continue to check your children throughout the next few months.

Sincerely,
Miss V. Anderson, RN School Nurse
