From the desk of Sister Stellta

"There are too many people who think that the only thing that's right is to get by, and the only thing that's wrong is to get caught." (J.C. Watts)

From the Desk of Sister Stella Maria:

Doing the right thing can sometimes feel like the hardest thing in the world! But if you want to be known for your Christian character, practice integrity. Let your yes be yes and your no be no, deal fairly and honestly with everyone, do not seek to take advantage, and tell the truth no matter the cost.

Integrity carries a high price tag. Help us as we make major efforts every day to instill this value in our children.

To all second grade parents, thank you for attending our sixth session with your children in preparation for the reception of the sacraments. We appreciate your participation and your attentiveness during the reflections. Please know and understand that you are making a choice for your child to be part of the life of the church. To be part of the life of the church and the faith community it is essential that you bring your child to Mass each week.

If you are not open to participate each week you may want to rethink your choice for your child.

Parents of grade three, in a few weeks we will bring you back together and ask you to share on the faith journey of your children after First Communion. We are planning a time of reflection for both parents and children - Nov. 8th from 1pm - 4pm
.
GRADE LEVEL LITURGIES AND POTLUCK DINNERS: These liturgies and dinners are very meaningful to our students. It is very gratifying to see the excitement of each child as he/she looks forward to an evening out with mom and dad. This year our potluck dinners will continue as usual. We are moving the place of the liturgy from the JCPC to the altar in front of Our Lady in the church. By having the liturgy in the church the following will be accomplished:

More freedom to drop off your part of the dinner without interrupting the liturgy

More space for set up and movement in the J.C.P.C.

              Greater participation in the Liturgy.

THE religion teacher and I have discussed this change and decided to try it for a year.

              The schedule is:

6:15 Drop off your food for dinner

6:30 Liturgy begins (Families sit together)

7:15 Return to the JCPC for dinner-- .

Second Grade Parent Alert!
By Joan Doyle, Parish Director of Religious Education

At the First Sacraments parent meeting last Thursday night (October 16),
I handed out a sheet containing the names and phone numbers of the Sacraments Team along with a list of important dates for the year. Well, oooooooops, I made a huge mistake regarding the dates of the reception of the sacraments themselves. This week I sent home with your child a corrected sheet with the accurate dates. Please ask your child for it or dig through the backpack! Destroy the previous roster and place the new one on your refrigerator or in another prominent place. My apologies for any inconvenience I may have caused.

Weekly Readings/Reflections

Next Sunday, October 26, is the Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time.
Please read and reflect on these readings during the week (alone or with family and friends), and come to next Sunday’s liturgy prepared to listen attentively to the proclamation of the Word of God.

READING I Jeremiah 31:7-9

Thus says the LORD:
Shout with joy for Jacob, exult at the head of the nations; proclaim your praise and say:
The LORD has delivered his people, the remnant of Israel.
Behold, I will bring them back from the land of the north;
I will gather them from the ends of the world, with the blind and the lame in their midst,
the mothers and those with child; they shall return as an immense throng.
They departed in tears, but I will console them and guide them;
I will lead them to brooks of water, on a level road, so that none shall stumble.
For I am a father to Israel, Ephraim is my first-born.

READING II Hebrews 5:1-6

Brothers and sisters:
Every high priest is taken from among men and made their representative before God,
to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.
He is able to deal patiently with the ignorant and erring, for he himself is beset by weakness
and so, for this reason, must make sin offerings for himself as well as for the people.
No one takes this honor upon himself but only when called by God, just as Aaron was.
In the same way, it was not Christ who glorified himself in becoming high priest,
but rather the one who said to him:
You are my son: this day I have begotten you;
just as he says in another place:
You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

GOSPEL Mark 10:46-52

As Jesus was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a sizable crowd,
Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus, sat by the roadside begging.
On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say,
"Jesus, son of David, have pity on me."
And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent.
But he kept calling out all the more,
"Son of David, have pity on me."
Jesus stopped and said, "Call him."
So they called the blind man, saying to him,
"Take courage; get up, Jesus is calling you."
He threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus.
Jesus said to him in reply, "What do you want me to do for you?"
The blind man replied to him, "Master, I want to see."
Jesus told him, "Go your way; your faith has saved you."
Immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way.

Thirtieth Sunday (October 26)

READINGS The Lord has delivered his people; Christ did not glorify himself, but God glorified him; The faith of a blind man heals him, then he follows Jesus.

WHAT I HEAR
What makes me joyful as I reflect on the first reading?

MY FAITH JOURNEY In light of what Jesus did for Bartimaeus, what do I want the Lord to do for me?

FOR CHILDREN
The blind man was so excited about meeting Jesus that the people couldn’t shut him up! Bartimaeus’ faith was so strong. Sit quietly see the scene. Imagine you are Bartimaeus. What would you have said and done after Jesus healed you?

Tournament Information

The Purple, Gold, Green and White teams will be playing in the McDonald’s Cup tournament this Saturday, October 25th. More information will follow from the coaches.

Purple Team

Last week, the Purple Team played at home against St. Sebastian’s, winning the first two games with impressive scores of 15-2, 15-2. A few days later, the team traveled to St. Joan of Arc and brought their record to 7-0 with a 15-0, 15-3 victory. The girls are all playing outstanding volleyball!

Green Team

The Green Team played in a tournament last Saturday at St. Thomas the Apostle. The girls played extremely well, finishing 4th in the tournament. Go St. Paul’s!

Red Team

The Red Team won their match against St. Monica’s last Friday with a decisive 15-0, 15-2 victory. In the first game, one stellar St. Paul’s 6th grader served a 15-0 game, preventing St. Monica’s from ever serving the ball. Everyone played a terrific game!

Blue Team

The Blue Team started its season with a win over St. Monica’s. Way to go girls!

If a team parent from one of the girls’ volleyball teams would like to include highlights from their team’s games in the Epistle, please e-mail the article to Carol Page (e-mail address in directory) and it will be included in this column.

From the School Nurse

HEAD LICE ALERT!

Recently, head lice was reported in the fourth grade. Please read the following and check your child this weekend!

Your child, any child, can get head lice.
It is no cause for anger, guilt, or fear. It has nothing to do with cleanliness and does not reflect poorly on you as a parent. Treatment with a non-prescription medication followed by careful cleaning of the house and car usually solves the problem. If the lice become resistant, you may need to ask your Pediatrician for a prescription medication.

Infestation is not related to personal cleanliness or the level of hygiene in this school
. Head lice are transmitted by head-to-head contact or on shared personal items, such as hats, combs, brushes, scarves, sleeping bags and stuffed animals. To minimize the risk of repeated outbreaks, remind your children not to share these items.

The first clue that may lead to detection of head lice
is the frequent and intense scratching of the scalp. To check for infestation, carefully examine the hair around the back of the neck and behind the ears. You are looking for tiny white eggs (nits) on hair shafts. Since head lice shy away from light, you may only see their eggs (nits), small, whitish and of uniform size attached to the hair shaft. Head lice themselves are small grayish-tan insects without wings. Any family member with signs or symptoms should be treated immediately. Please remember full application of shampoo is required.

After treatment, take these steps to keep your family members and home environment lice-free:
1. Soak all combs, brushes, etc., in hot water (over 130 F) for 10 minutes.
2. Wash exposed clothing, bed linens, and towels in hot water and dry, in a dryer, on hot cycle for at least twenty minutes. Items not machine washable must be dry cleaned or stored at room temperature in a tightly sealed plastic bag for at least two weeks. Items such as helmets should be similarly bagged and stored.
3. Vacuum mattresses, upholstered furniture, pillows, carpets, and car seats.
Head lice cannot survive without a human host. They cannot survive on family pets. Choose an effective treatment, use as directed, and perform the steps listed above to eliminate head lice from your home and to help prevent their spread in the community.

PLEASE INFORM THE SCHOOL NURSE AS SOON AS YOU KNOW THERE IS A PROBLEM. THIS ENABLES THE NURSE TO GET A HEAD START ON CLASSROOM CHECKS BEFORE THERE IS A MAJOR SPREAD OF LICE IN THE CLASSROOMS!

IT DOES NOT BENEFIT ANYONE TO WAIT UNTIL AFTER YOU
have shampooed several times to get rid of the lice, to inform the School Nurse. Chances are your child has infected others and after being clean gets re-infected, thus causing a vicious circle! Please continue to check your children throughout the next few months.

PARENTS PLEASE NOTE

Medication, over the counter or prescription may not be taken at school without a note on file in the Health Office! Cough drops are included in this
category! The Health Office can not call for a verbal okay by phone!

Sincerely, Miss V. Anderson, RN School Nurse

ALOHA ST. PAUL’S FESTIVAL RECEIPTS

Now that we have all put away our hula skirts, it is time to tackle the boring task of accumulating those receipts and submitting them for reimbursement. Simply complete a reimbursement form (found on the circular stand outside the office) and send the form and receipts to me through the Black Bag or the mail. I would like to finalize the Festival accounting as soon as possible so any help you can give me in getting your receipts in soon would be greatly appreciated.

If you do not wish to be reimbursed, you can complete a donation report and send it to me along with copies of your receipts. I will sign the form and return it to you to be kept with your tax records. Donation reports can also be found on the stand outside the office.

If you would like me to e-mail or fax you one of these forms, you can call or e-mail me and I will send them to you. My e-mail address is listed in the directory.

Mahalo!

Festival Treasurer

SUGAR SHACK NEWS

Thank you to everyone who brought goodies for the Sugar Shack this year. Once again, your generosity was truly amazing. The creativity of each of you allowed us to offer a broad range of tasty treats.

We also want to thank everyone who blended mochas, brewed coffee, made cappuccinos, or just sold goodies. We cannot say enough to thank all of you who worked extra shifts or simply lent a hand when we needed it. Without you, the Bake Booth would not be the same.

Finally, we want to express our sincere appreciation to Marina Case, former St. Paul’s parent and owner of Mario’s Restaurant in Santa Monica, who once again arranged for the cappuccino machine. Additionally, we want to thank Jackie Mora at Starbucks, who donated and ground the coffee
.
If you are missing a basket, a tray, or other serving item that accompanied your donation, please contact Leslie McDowell.
