"GRATITUDE IS THE FAIREST FLOWER
THAT BLOSSOMS IN THE SOUL" W.W.
From the Desk of Sister Stella Maria:
The children, faculty, and staff are filled to overflowing
with gratitude for a most magnificent festival. To every
single person who helped in any way, large or small,
we say a huge THANK YOU. Please know that each
day you and your family is in the prayers of over five
hundred students. Because of these prayers many, many
blessing should come your way.
Special thanks to GOD for providing us with the
best weather for set-up and three days of sun shine
for celebration.
On, Thursday October 16th each one of your children
will take home your appointment paper for your conference
with your child's teacher. Please honor the time you
have been assigned. We are very appreciative of the
parents who contacted us letting us know which time
suited their schedule. It is now too late to do this
except in the case of a real emergency.
The purpose of your Parent-Teacher-Conference:
See how your child has adjusted to a new grade level.
Examine you child's study habits
Child's ability to focus and listen during class
Child's sense of responsibility and punctuality
Child's organizational skills
Child's self-esteem ---- Personal appearance/grooming
What do you need to share with the teacher that will
help your child continue to grow? We are just halfway
through the first trimester so there is plenty of time
to make changes to improve before the next evaluation,
which will be report cards.
Remember, research tells us," when the hope and
school works together the student grows three

Dear SPA Families,
The rides have been disassembled and driven away. The
blowers have cleared the schoolyard of every scrap. The
wonderful smell of grilling hamburgers has long since
drifted out of the Pavilion
.but we have some great
memories that will remain forever! As we say "Aloha"
to this years fall festival, we send our most heartfelt
thanks to EVERYONE in the entire St. Paul the Apostle
community. We are so grateful for the support of our school
parents, the faculty, staff, our Paulist Fathers, the
Parish administrators, our Parishioners and of course
our very tolerant neighbors. It would take many pages
to name all those who have given so much of their time
and energy.
Patti, Mary Kay, Jill, Susan and Kelley: You really
know how to throw a fun party!!!! The numbers arent
all in yet, but we are pretty sure that some records were
broken. Congratulations on a job well done

Weekly
Readings/Reflections
Next Sunday, October 19, is the Twenty-Ninth
Sunday in Ordinary Time.
Please read and reflect on these readings during the week
(alone or with family and friends), and come to next Sundays
liturgy prepared to listen attentively to the proclamation
of the Word of God.
READING I Isaiah 53:10-11

The LORD was pleased to crush him in infirmity.
If he gives his life as an offering for sin, he shall
see his descendants in a long life,
and the will of the LORD shall be accomplished through
him.
Because of his affliction he shall see the light in fullness
of days;
through his suffering, my servant shall justify many,
and their guilt he shall bear.
READING II Hebrews 4:14-16
Brothers and sisters:
Since we have a great high priest who has passed through
the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God,
let us hold fast to our confession.
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize
with our weaknesses,
but one who has similarly been tested in every way, yet
without sin.
So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to
receive mercy and to find grace for timely help.
GOSPEL Mark 10:35-45
James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus and
said to him,
"Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask
of you."
He replied, "What do you wish me to do for you?"
They answered him, "Grant that in your glory we may
sit one at your right and the other at your left."
Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are
asking.
Can you drink the cup that I drink or be baptized with
the baptism with which I am baptized?"
They said to him, "We can."
Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink, you will
drink,
and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will
be baptized;
but to sit at my right or at my left is not mine to give
but is for those for whom it has been prepared."
When the ten heard this, they became indignant at James
and John.
Jesus summoned them and said to them,
"You know that those who are recognized as rulers
over the Gentiles lord it over them,
and their great ones make their authority over them felt.
But it shall not be so among you.
Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your
servant;
whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave
of all.
For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve
and to give his life as a ransom for many."
Twenty-Ninth Sunday (October 19)
READINGS Through the Suffering Servant
many will be justified; Jesus, though sinless, has been
tested like us - we can be confident he understands when
we fail; Once more Jesus shows us how he values those
who serve others.
WHAT I HEAR How do the readings help me relate
to my understanding of suffering?
MY FAITH JOURNEY How is Christ asking me to serve
this week? Sit quietly and ask him.
FOR CHILDREN Who do you know at school or church
who shows us how to serve
Others? You can serve too. Is there someone you know who
needs your help today? What might those things be?

SPA GIRLS GREEN TEAM ~ VOLLEYBALL
The Girls Green Team defeated Brentwood in two
hotly contested games on Tuesday. Led by the powerful
serving of Carleen and the intimidating spiking ability
of Allison, the Green Team prevailed over Brentwood,
2-0. The action stopped between games just long enough
to allow two rides to be delivered for the Festival.
On Wednesday, the Green Team traveled to Immaculate
Heart where they made quick work of defeating the I.H.
Team, 2-0. Unfortunately, Middle Blocker, Kirstin fell
and broke her arm, ending her season prematurely. The
calm, unflappable style of Green Team Coach, Chris,
has allowed the Green Team to achieve at new levels
of confidence and ability. On Friday, the Green Team
will meet Marlborough in what promises to be an exciting
competition

HEAD LICE ALERT!
Recently, head lice was reported in the fourth
grade. Please read the following and check your child
this weekend!
Your child, any child, can get head lice. It is
no cause for anger, guilt, or fear. It has nothing
to do with cleanliness and does not reflect poorly
on you as a parent. Treatment with a non-prescription
medication followed by careful cleaning of the house
and car usually solves the problem. If the lice become
resistant, you may need to ask your Pediatrician for
a prescription medication.
Infestation is not related to personal cleanliness or
the level of hygiene in this school. Head lice are
transmitted by head-to-head contact or on shared personal
items, such as hats, combs, brushes, scarves, sleeping
bags and stuffed animals. To minimize the risk of repeated
outbreaks, remind your children not to share these items.
The first clue that may lead to detection of head lice
is the frequent and intense scratching of the scalp.
To check for infestation, carefully examine the hair
around the back of the neck and behind the ears. You
are looking for tiny white eggs (nits) on hair shafts.
Since head lice shy away from light, you may only see
their eggs (nits), small, whitish and of uniform size
attached to the hair shaft. Head lice themselves are
small grayish-tan insects without wings. Any family
member with signs or symptoms should be treated immediately.
Please remember full application of shampoo is required.
After treatment, take these steps to keep your family
members and home environment lice-free:
1. Soak all combs, brushes, etc., in hot water (over130
F) for 10 minutes.
2. Wash exposed clothing, bed linens, and towels in
hot water and dry, in a dryer, on hot cycle for at least
twenty minutes. Items not machine washable must be dry
cleaned or stored at room temperature in a tightly sealed
plastic bag for at least two weeks. Items such as helmets
should be similarly bagged and stored.
3. Vacuum mattresses, upholstered furniture, pillows,
carpets, and car seats.
Head lice cannot survive without a human host.
They cannot survive on family pets. Choose an effective
treatment, use as directed, and perform the steps listed
above to eliminate head lice from your home and to help
prevent their spread in the community.
PLEASE INFORM THE SCHOOL NURSE AS SOON AS YOU KNOW
THERE IS A PROBLEM. THIS ENABLES THE NURSE TO GET A
HEAD START ON CLASSROOM CHECKS BEFORE THERE IS A MAJOR
SPREAD OF LICE IN THE CLASSROOMS!
IT DOES NOT BENEFIT ANYONE TO WAIT UNTIL AFTER YOU
have shampooed several times to get rid of the lice,
to inform the School Nurse. Chances are your child
has infected others and after being clean gets re-infected,
thus causing a vicious circle! Please continue to check
your children throughout the next few months
Sincerely
Miss V. Anderson, RN
School Nurse
