From the Desk of SSM

Welcome back to the New Year 2003. May this New Year be filled with
blessings for you, your family and friends especially the gift of good health. As we hear of wars and rumors of wars may God grants us a peace-filled world at home and abroad.

A most sincere thank you for your prayerful Christmas wishes, beautiful Christmas cards and very generous and beautiful gifts. My personal "thank yous" are coming soon.

Parents, we are most grateful to you for your co-operation with our new after school pick-up arrangements. Just be sure to explain the procedure to grandparents and/or nannies. Some are not sure of what is allowed or not allowed. The safety of our children is Number One.

During the month of January each year we have a drug education program for all students from grade five through eight. Tuesday Jan. 7th was the first day. The program will continue the week of Jan. 13th and on Thursday Jan. 16th there will be a presentation for all parents from 7:30pm to 9pm in the JCPC. The company who brings this program to us is called "MILES TO GO". It was difficult to schedule as they had a command performance at Camp Pendelton in San Diego. Guess the Government comes first!

SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION

During the month of January the parents of grade two are scheduled for interviews to share their journey of faith with their children as they prepared the children for the sacrament of First Reconciliation. On Saturday Feb. 1 at 10:30 the children will receive the Sacrament. We are most impressed with the parents who have participated with us for a full year in preparation for this most sacred event. Parents of first grade students, the program begins for you on Jan. 16 in the JCPC from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. The first session will give you an overview of the year.

NEW YEAR’S BLESSING PRAYER FOR CLOCKS AND CALENDARS

Lord, You who live outside of time and reside in the imperishable moment, we
ask Your blessing this New Year’s Day upon Your gift to us of time.

Bless our clocks and watches, You who kindly direct us to observe the passing of
minutes and hours.

May they make us aware of the miracle of each second of life we experience
May these our ticking servants help us not to miss that which is important,
while You keep us form machine-like routine.

May we ever be free from being clock - watchers and instead become time lovers.

Bless our calendars, these ordered lists of days, weeks and months, of holidays, holy days, fasts and feasts all our special days of remembering.

May these servants, our calendars, once reserved for the royal few, for magi lead pyramid priests, now grace our home and our lives.

May they remind us of birthdays and other gift-days, as they teach us the secret that all life is meant for celebration and contemplation,

Bless, Lord, this New Year, each of its 365 days and nights.

Bless us with new moons and full moons.

Bless us with happy seasons and a long life.
Grant to us, lord, the New Year’s gift of a year of love.

AMEN

From Fr. Tom, Pastor

One, Holy, Catholic & Apostolic

We begin the New Year with traditions that have been taken from many different places. For example did you know…

When Julius Caesar renovated the Roman Empire’s calendar he adopted an idea already extant that the first month would be named January after the Roman god Janus. (Julius named July after himself.) In Roman mythology Janus is the god of doors, gateways and beginnings. The Romans believed that the blessing of Janus ensured good endings. Janus is always represented, whether in statue, coin, bust or other rendering, as having two faces. In his principal temple in the Roman Forum his statue stood so that the two faces gazed in opposite directions: one looking out a door to the East, the other with a view to the West. Janus was the god of the Romans who let them go both forward and backward.

There is a tradition that holds one could affect the luck they would have throughout the coming year by what they did or ate on the first day of the year. Thus began the tradition of New Year’s parties so that folks could spend the first few minutes of a new year in the company of family and friends.

It was once believed that the first visitor on New Year's Day would bring either good luck or bad luck the rest of the year. It was particularly lucky if that visitor happened to be a tall dark-haired man. (As a bald man of average height I find this one a bit suspect.)

Then there are the traditional New Year foods that are thought to bring luck. Many cultures believe that anything in the of a ring is good luck, because it symbolizes "coming full circle," completing a year's cycle. For that reason, the Dutch believe that eating donuts on New Year's Day will bring good fortune. One more reason to like the Dutch.

Catholics have a tradition of beginning things with a prayer or a blessing to make all things holy. In that spirit I offer you this prayer to begin 2003 so that we may all work together to make the New Year holy.

Lord Jesus, prince of peace, bring peace into the world. You died to save us all.
As we begin this New Year raise us to new life with you, and help us to be
peacemakers—today and every day. Lord Jesus Christ, hear our prayer, for you
are Lord forever and eve
r.

Blessings for a grace-filled and peace-full new year.
Fr. Tom

PWC President

Dear SPA Parents,

Welcome Back!! I hope both you and your children have re-adjusted to the world of school.

Drug Awareness Night

Parents, please mark your calendar and plan to attend the Parent Drug Awareness Night on Thursday, January 16th 7:30-9 PM. Important information will be presented about the dangers our children face from drugs. This is a date change from both the printed calendar in the directory, and the calendar on the website.

Traffic and Safety

Thanks to all the parents, who are adhering to the new afternoon pick-up procedures. We know that this is an adjustment, but the safety of our children is paramount. Thank You, Teresa McDugald, our Safety and Traffic Chair for all her hard work!!

Weekly Readings/Reflections

Next Sunday, January 12, is The Baptism of the Lord.
The "reflections" include a brief description of the Readings, What I hear, My faith journey and For Children.
Please ponder these questions and discuss them with family and friends
.

READING I Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7

Thus says the LORD: Here is my servant whom I uphold,
my chosen one with whom I am pleased, upon whom I have put my spirit;
he shall bring forth justice to the nations, not crying out, not shouting,
not making his voice heard in the street. a bruised reed he shall not break,
and a smoldering wick he shall not quench, until he establishes justice on the earth;
the coastlands will wait for his teaching. I, the LORD, have called you for the victory of justice, I have grasped you by the hand; I formed you, and set you as a covenant of the people, a light for the nations, to open the eyes of the blind, to bring out prisoners from confinement, and from the dungeon, those who live in darkness.

READING II Acts 10:34-38

Peter proceeded to speak to those gathered in the house of Cornelius, saying:
"In truth, I see that God shows no partiality. Rather, in every nation whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to him. You know the word that he sent to the Israelites as he proclaimed peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all, what has happened all over Judea,
beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached, how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him."

GOSPEL Mark 1:7-11

This is what John the Baptist proclaimed: "One mightier than I is coming after me.
I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals.
I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."

It happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased

THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD (JANUARY 12)

READINGS: ‘Listen that you may have life’. God’s commandments are not burdensome. Jesus is baptized.

WHAT I HEAR: Picture yourself on the bank of the Jordan river. See Jesus baptized. Hear the voice from heaven. What might God be pleased about in my life?

MY FAITH JOURNEY: How do I ‘seek the Lord’?

FOR CHILDREN: Have you ever seen a baptism? Can you draw a picture of a baptism? At our baptism we were given a lighted candle as a sign that we are to be a light to help people, just like Jesus. Think of one thing you can to do help someone this week.

ART LITERACY

We hope you enjoyed the students’ art exhibition in the church for the Christmas season. Under the direction of Cynthia Wuliger, the Art Literacy volunteers gave of their time to make this beautiful display possible. Thank you Art Literacy women for your tireless efforts and dedication. Parents, we would appreciate receiving any comments on the project. Please stop by the art studio at school.

The next topic is landscape: an art. There is so much ground to cover that the material will be presented in two sections. The first part will include ancient Egyptian tomb wall painting, Chinese landscape art, the Greeks, European works of gospel themes that depict man in nature, proceeding through J.M.W. Turner’s work. The students will work in watercolour and learn techniques to enhance their own interpretations of landscape.

On your next visit to the Getty, do stop by the Landscapes of Myth exhibition in the Getty Research building. The students will be able to appreciate this unique display of art works from the late fifteenth century to the end of the nineteenth century. This is a unique opportunity to experience the Getty’s extensive Research Library’s assembly of original and rare materials. Landscapes of Myth will be on display through February 2, 2003.
