From the desk of Sister Stella

“I would rather have a boy of mine stand high in his studies than high in athletics, but I could a great deal rather have him show true manliness of character than show either intellectual or physical prowess…” (Theodore Roosevelt to his son).

Ms. Heinrich, we look forward to your return to St. Paul’s for the 2007 – 2008 school year. May God watch over you, and your husband, as you give birth to your second child.

We are thrilled to have Mrs. Bailey teaching seventh grade this school year. Thank you so much Madeleine!

Since this is the final issue of the Epistle, we wish all of our families a happy and relaxing summer. Parents, please take your children to Mass every Sunday during the summer. No matter where you are vacationing, there is a Catholic Church – search it out.

We ask God’s blessing on students who are moving on to different places. May God go with them and keep them safe.

ST. JAMES INN - SUMMER FIESTA 2006

The St. James Inn invites you to an outdoor “Summer Fiesta” on Saturday, July 22nd at one of L.A.’s best-kept secrets, the historic Gilmore Adobe. Come for margaritas, tasty Mexican cuisine, dancing under the stars, incredible auctions, and catching up with friends.

Founded almost 20 years ago by Fr. Pat Traynor (with the help of St. Paul the Apostle families), the Inn provides a home away from home for out-of-town patients and families undergoing treatment at UCLA Medical Center and other nearby hospitals.

This year’s fundraiser is dedicated to the memory of our beloved director, Fr. Harold "Bud" Powers, CSP.

For more details, please contact Judy Ness.

See you on July 22nd !

PWC President

Dear SPA Parents,

I would like to thank all of you for the opportunity to serve as PWC President this year. It has been a true honor. I wish Mary Kay Lalli and her Board a wonderful 2006-2007 School Year. We wish them all great success in the coming school year.
The number of hours volunteered by our parents during the year is incredible. I would also like to extend my appreciation to the members of the 2005-2006 PWC Board for their willingness to serve whenever called upon. It has been an honor to work with such a terrific Board.

Graduation
Congratulations to the Class of 2006. Good luck next year in… HIGH SCHOOL!

Thank you 7th grade parents for putting together the many graduation events for the graduates.  Bless you.

Congratulations to all Kindergarten graduates this year. We wish you the best!!

Annual Faculty Breakfast
Each year, the PWC prepares and serves Breakfast to the SPA faculty staff and parish Office after a special Mass. This is our small way of letting the teachers know how much we appreciate them. They are responsible for educating the hearts and minds of our children and we are so very grateful.

Uniform Exchange
Uniform exchange will be held in the Upper Social Hall Room from 7:50AM to10:00 AM on Wednesday, June21st, the last day of school. Huge "THANKS" to Mimi Coons and Mary Pendergast for all of their help during the school year providing this important resource for our families.

Please remember that Tuesday, June 20th will be a late day. Coaches program will be in effect

Have a great summer!

Warm Regards,

Julie Chait

The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

Reading 1
Ex 24:3-8

When Moses came to the people
and related all the words and ordinances of the LORD,
they all answered with one voice,
"We will do everything that the LORD has told us."
Moses then wrote down all the words of the LORD and,
rising early the next day,
he erected at the foot of the mountain an altar
and twelve pillars for the twelve tribes of Israel.
Then, having sent certain young men of the Israelites
to offer holocausts and sacrifice young bulls
as peace offerings to the LORD,
Moses took half of the blood and put it in large bowls;
the other half he splashed on the altar.
Taking the book of the covenant, he read it aloud to the people,
who answered, "All that the LORD has said, we will heed and do."
Then he took the blood and sprinkled it on the people, saying,
"This is the blood of the covenant
that the LORD has made with you
in accordance with all these words of his."

Gospel
Mk 14:12-16, 22-26

On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread,
when they sacrificed the Passover lamb,
Jesus’disciples said to him,
"Where do you want us to go
and prepare for you to eat the Passover?"
He sent two of his disciples and said to them,
"Go into the city and a man will meet you,
carrying a jar of water.
Follow him.
Wherever he enters, say to the master of the house,
'The Teacher says, "Where is my guest room
where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?"'
Then he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready.
Make the preparations for us there."
The disciples then went off, entered the city,
and found it just as he had told them;
and they prepared the Passover.
While they were eating,
he took bread, said the blessing,
broke it, gave it to them, and said,
"Take it; this is my body."
Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them,
and they all drank from it.
He said to them,
"This is my blood of the covenant,
which will be shed for many.
Amen, I say to you,
I shall not drink again the fruit of the vine
until the day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God."
Then, after singing a hymn,
they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Congratulations to George B. in 1st grade, who won the drawing for the digital camera.  65 students sold ten or more books and participated in the drawing.  1B and 2A were the Jamba Juice class winners and will receive their Jamba Juice prize on Thursday, June 15!  Congratulations.  We had a record selling season and are grateful to all who participated so actively in selling raffle tickets for St. Paul’s!  Thanks to Nicole Gaffney and Nancy Cooper for their leadership in this area.

Out of uniform dress can be worn this Thursday, June 15 by all students whose family name is listed on the Patron list in this epistle.  We had a record-breaking spring in terms of participation and dollars raised.  Currently 190 families have participated raising approximately $54,000.  Thank you to all who have participated!  Our goal is 100% participation!

This Thursday the students of St. Paul’s will all be given an “Island’s” cup with a lid.  Inside are the directions for the coin contest.  Save your coins this summer and get ready to pour in September!  The cups were donated by Islands!  Sharian Spencer will be coordinating the Coin Contest this year.  Happy saving!  Hang on to these cups!

Thank you to all who have participated in planning for the festival to date!  Submissions for the auction, participation in the raffle, spring festival wear, and Patronage have been overwhelming!
